Searching for information on a John Henry Charlton, b. 1827 in Missouri, married Hettie Baird in 1860 in Lewis County, Missouri. The earliest census record I can find him on is the 1870 Federal Census, which puts him in Williamstown, Lewis County, Missouri. His Civil War draft registration record in 1863 also puts him in Williamstown. He moved to Iowa by 1880, then back to Missouri by 1889. His children's names are: Harold, Lula Belle (m. J. Dyer), Fannie (m1. F. Childs, m2. J. Williams), William Wallace, and Mollie (m. T. Wakeman).
I have found some information on a John Charlton, originally from Ireland and migrated to Audrain County, Missouri. The information I came across said that his son, John H. married a Nancy Carter, then a Mrs. Gloss, so this looks like it is not a match.
I am pretty new at this - if anyone has any info or these names ring a bell, I'd appreciate some help :)

Hello there,
I have the same problem. I have managed to trace my family to North Yorkshire as far back as the 1700's, then the name Charlton/Carlton fizzles out. Yet, I remember when I was young being told (as my father was before me) that we were descended from Reiving stock.
I am of the opinion that some of the Charlton Reivers drifted South, as there was a big clampdown on the reiving families in the 1600s and, for many, life on the Borders became deliberately VERY difficult. Our family tradition must have its basis somewhere as, probably, does yours!
Interestingly enough, my wife is descended from a clan who were traditionally sworn enemies of the Charltons!
All the very best,
Shaun Charlton

Do you have a copy of the actual record for his birth? Does it state names of both parents?
Do you also have a marriage record for Henry and Mary Crane?
Thanks,
Janet
