Further investigation makes me believe my original query is factually wrong.
Alfred Peter Charlton was born in 1890/1891, I presume somewhere in the Newcastle area. He married Elizabeth ( I am unsure what her maiden name is) in 1912/13. They had two sons. My father Edward was born on 22/06/1918, at Ebchester. His brother Albert Robson Charlton was born on 28/08/1916, but I don't know where. In 1922/23 they all migrated to Australia.

My Grandfather was born Alfred Peter Charlton, maybe on 29 March, 1894, at Ebchester. In later life he just called himself Peter. In 1924 he married Elizabeth Maxwell at Hexham, Northumberland. They had 2 children - my father Edward - born 22 June 1918 at Ebchester, and Albert Robson Charlton. They migrated to Australia when the boys were still children. Some of Peter's relatives migrated too. Vincent Proctor Charlton was one I know who came too. I also know my grandmother had a sister Rosie, who remained in England. I also have a photograph of a cousin of my fathers. She could be Rosies' daughter.

Trying to crack a log jam in the tree.
I have Thomas CHARLTON born in Middlesex in around 1803, later married in Newcastle in 1823 to Mary HOWARD also of Middlesex.
Trying to find any record of Thomas' parents or details of why / when they moved to Newcastle. Suspicion is a previous family link to Newcastle but no evidence. He is on the census in 1841 as a Joiner and again in 1851 then dies between 1853 - 8.
Anyone with any ideas or clues gratefully received !
Andrew Charlton
