I have just come across your message. My grandfather was James Charlton born in Chirk to James born Newcastle on tyne and Amelia nee Pryce. James senior was living in London and the census shows his sister Mary living with the family. I am sure there is a connection. I am having similar problems with the Newcastle connection

Hi Christopher,
Many thanks for your reassurance over the Harry/Henry connection as I feel sure he is one and the same person. I am about to send off for some more BMD records and will let you know when I have the proof in from me.
Pearl

Hi Christopher, this isn't the one I'm after. He was born in Middx and christened at Paddington. Recorded 1881 at Newhaven as a Customs Clerk, married Leah Bennett 1885 at Steyning and awarded a Bronze RHS medal 1886 for trying to save a man from drowning in Newhaven Harbour. Next reference is 1888 when living in Liverpool (having moved from Southsea previous year) Leah cuts the 3 kids throats and her own but survives and is sent to Broadmoor dying a few years later, he drops off the scene. I have had contact with others on Genes Reunited re your one as he is the only death registered for an Arthur b 1860-5 Cheers Pete

As you can see from our own young Prince, Pearl, Harry is a very common nickname/abbreviation for 'Henry.' Census collectors/registry officers of the 19th century were not always as careful/formal as they should have been when collecting information about people's real names, either. Good luck with your search...have you found Harry's baptism record, by the way? That might throw some light on your situation.

I don't think we're related but I am resaearching all 'Arthur Charltons.' One of our Charlton ancestors named his eldest son 'Arthur' (b. 1862 in Houghton-le-Spring, Co Durham.) The family were sticklers at naming the children after other family members, but we are completely baffled with this one. We have been unable to find any 'Arthur's' in either his mother's or father's family trees. You seem to know when your 'Charles Arthur' was baptised - do you have any information about his parent's names or place of birth? (I am looking for a connection.)
