Dear Deana
Some weeks ago you mailed me regsrding my work on the Charltons of
Sandiacre.
I think I attempted to send you a reply which appeared to bounce back.
Unless of course you did receive the reply. Does this make any sense.
You asked if I was willing to have my material shared with others on the
Charlton site, to which the answer is a definate YES. In the hope that
others can add to my material.
Since I tried to mail you I have been handed another pedigree which appears
to connect our Thomas to his father, who may in turn be the grandson of the
Sir Richard Charlton of Bosworth fame.
Let me know if this message reaches you.
Stephen Flinders

If you do not know about the Border Reivers you should do. Briefly, in
the centuries leading up to the union of the scottish and english crowns
under James I(England) the border country between England and Scotland
was essentially bandit country and there was precious little law. What
there was were feuding families who indulged in all sorts of nasty work
- rustling, kidnap and murder were common. The families involved were
called Reivers - it's where you get the word 'bereaved' from The
Charltons were one of the foremost families and the nastiest!!!
I found out about this through my daughter who is into historical
re-enactment and went to an event in a castle north of the Scottish
Border near Dumfries. When she gave out her name the room went quiet!
For more about the reivers there are lots of web sites - try doing a
search. The Charlton 'HQ' was at Hesleyside north of Hexham and there
is a story of the wife of the head of the household presenting her
husband with a set of spurs instead of a roast joint one lunchtime - in
other words - time to get out and bring some money in! I understand
that the head of the Charltons at Hesleyside keeps a spur in a safe -
just in case.
The reivers were also subjected to a vicious curse by a Bishop of
Glasgow - again you can see this on the web.
Just a few snippets - all gathered from various web sites and museums in
the English border country between Carlisle and Newcastle.

Hi Judith
Sorry But My Charlton's lived in Northumberland Newcastle and there was no
ELIJAH in the family
if yours does come from the north of England your best bet would be to go to
the census or cemeteries
