Hi Leila,
You have done so well to trace your ancestors back so far, but I would be very wary about just picking an 'Edward' from the I.G.I at random! (Sorry if I have misunderstood, but it sounded to me that that is what you were considering!) Northumberland is a large county and there were thousands, of Charltons living there at this time.
A far better approach would be to try to systematically find the record in the baptism registers of all of Edward and Ann's five children. One of these might give you Ann's maiden name. My ancestor, James Charlton, had four children between 1802-1808 and his wife's maiden name (Priscilla Nimmo) was recorded in the register on each occasion. Armed with the maiden name, you can then return to the I.G.I. and try to find the details of their marriage.
Happy hunting,
Keren Charlton.

Nancy and 'cousins',
I have nothing on this JOHN but my ancestor, JEPTHA CHARLTON was born I
believe in OHIO circa 1800. He may have been the son of Rachel Phipps and Jeptha
Charlton who were m. in PENNSYLVANIA circa 1800. My Jeptha m. a MARY CLAPPER
in Ohio and removed to MO. about 1840.
I noted that your JOHN came to Ohio and that he may have been a METHODIST as
were my Charlton's when in MO.
Would be great to find a connection!

My 3rd gr. Grandfather, Edward Charlton (1790-1829) was the Landscape Architect to Sir Hudson Lowe, Gov. of St. Helena during Napoleon's confinement there. He was drowned in 1829 while fishing with a party of gentleman who were visiting on the island. Edward and Ann had 5 children. My ancestor, Jane Charlton (1820-1881), one of their children, marrried William Mason (1821-1907).
IGI has many Edward Charltons m. to Ann. The Edward who married Ann Hardy, Northumberland might be the parents I seek. Any ideas?

i am looking for my grgrgr grandfather, JOHN CHARLTON who was born on 12/25/1759 in MONMOUTH, NEW JERSEY. there is supposed to be a family bible somewhere, though i can not verify this. john settled in ohio after the revolutionary war and he is mentioned in a book called' REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIERS FROM CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO.' i think he may have filed for a pension in 1812. it seems that he had a large family in ohio and he is buried in HAMILTON, COUNTY in ohio. the name of the cemetary is the METHODIST EPISCOLPALIAN CEMETARY in anderson township. he is said to have died around 1830 or 40. i think he may be the father of my grgr grandfather, JOHN CHARLTON who was married to ELIZABETH HUDSON in 1842 in either warren or clinton counties in ohio. john was born in 1814/elizabeth was born in ohio also/1821. let me know if you or any one else in this message board can help me find him.

I have just come across this message. There were a number of Charltons in Edinburgh but I am looking for information about Margaret Jane (Minnie) Charlton, born Edinburgh 1859 and Emma Louisa Charlton, born Edinburgh 1867. Their parents were George Charlton and Frances Mary Briggs. I don't know who they married but one or both went to the US.

Hello everyone, I am new to the list and would like to hear from anyone with Charlton ancestry from particularly Hott, Greystead area. Hott was a farmstead which was part of the Parish of Greystead from about 1811, prior to this it was in the old parish of Simonburn. My Charltons were baptised in the Scots Presbyterian Church at Falstone which is now called the United Reformed Church. If you can trace your Charltons to this area then please contact me.
Also has anyone contacted the gentleman regarding DNA testing for Charltons in his Boarder Reiving DNA project? He sent his message on 10th June 2004. I am always suspicious about people advertising services for money but as my family is from this area it is more than likely that I come from the Boarder Reiving Charlton family but was interested to know if anyone has had any positive feedback from it.

Bob Charlton/Australia
Bob,
My CHARLTON line is from near Bellingham. All were members of the
Presbyterian Church at Falstone. Here is my line:
Thomas(1), born abt 1700 at Dunkerley. He married Mary ? Children all born
at Dunterley, were:
Lionel, b 1727
George, b 1730
John, b 1731
Ann, b 1733, d 1787
Eleanor, b 1735, married John Scott in 1767
Thomas(2), b 1737, married Dorothy ?
Edward, b 1739, married Margaret Reed
Michael, b 1740
Peter, b 1740 (twin to Michael)
Jacob, b before 1743
James, b before 1743 (twin to Jacob) (This may be Jane)
Thomas(2), b 1737, married Dorothy. Their children all born at Stobille or
Lower Stobilee, were
Thomas, b 1770, d before 1778
Jane, b 1771, married William Nixon, 1792
Dorothy, b 1773, married John Thompson 1792
Elizabeth, b 1776, married Joseph Patterson 1800 and Ed Charlton in 1811
Thomas(3), b 1778, married Eleanor Scott 1802
James, b 1781
George, b 1782
Ann, b 1787
Peter, b 1790, d before 1826
Thomas(3), b 1778, married Eleanor SCOTT, daughter of Michael SCOTT and
Margaret ATCHISON of DaleyCastle Mill. The SCOTT family had very close ties to the
Falstone Presbyterian Church. Their children, all born in NewCastle, were:
Michael, b 1803
Thomas, b 1804, d before 1821
Adam(4), b 1806, d 1891, married Anne Gray in 1828
Margaret, b 1810
Eleanor, b 1812
Jane, b 1814, married George Gray (brother of Anne Gray)
RoseAnn, b 1816
Eleanor, b 1817
Isabelle, b 1820
Thomas, born 1822, d 1822.
We have some information to lead us to believe that the parents of Thomas(1)
may have been Lionel, b abt 1646 and Eleanor, but have not proven.
I do have much more extensive information on this line of the CHARLTON
family. You are the firs Charlton family member I have heard from with ties to the
Falstone Presbyterian Church. Please let me hear from you if you see any link
in the information I have supplied.
