I am trying to find John CHARLTON who was the father of Una CHARLTON (probably born c1920).
John was my grandmother's cousin, but not a first cousin. Therefore his mother would most likely have been a BURN - Elizabeth, Margaret or possibly Sarah Jane. The Burn family lived in the Kirkheaton/Belsay Barns area. Can anybody help me track them down please?

Hi, I'll send you an invitation to our Myfamily.com site. Several of our
interconnected families are stuck in there in different places, but Charlton
is one of them.
I used to have a photo of Norris on the site but then went on a clean-up
rampage and thought I'd put it on a cd but can't find it. Anyway, I got him
off the internet so he's out there somewheere.
Nan

Steve, I think the first connection I find to "Usher" name is Thomas Charton 1695-1743 married Alice Usher . Although I sometimes find different dates for these people. In an affidavit for application for membership in the "Society of Colonial Wars" Thomas Jackson Charlton gives the dates for Arthur Charlton's father Capt. Thomas charlton as 1679-1760 and Alice as 1681 to 1761. Kathy

I am so glad the information helped you out. I am always pleased when I can add something to someone else's research as that is why I enjoy doing it.
It would probably be a good idea to write me at my email address instead discussing all of this on the Message board.
I will write you and give my e-address to you. Later, Mary

Ah, I'm very happy you typed these up, since I was going to do it and you saved me the trouble! My Graff marriage records come from "Marriage Licenses of Frederick County, 1811-1840", Margaret E Meyers, Family Line Publications, Silver Spring MD, 1987. She has "Jun 26 1811 Groff, George to Charlton, Mary Eleanor."
My Charlton marriage info is from "Maryland Marriages, 1667-1899", Jordan Dodd, Liahona Research, and it differs from yours only as:
John W Charlton (& Elizabeth), 25 Sep 1790
Basil Norris (& Jane), 12 Nov 1822
Hahlon Talbott, 28 Mar 1832
But these are all still pretty close. And they are from the online copy at Ancestry.com, so I should check the book versions at our library just to verify things.
I have some census records on many of these, if anybody wants them. Notable is 1850 MD Baltimore (city), #522-622:
Mahlon Talbott 46 M Clerk VA
Louisa 46 F MD
Ann 17 F MD
Joseph 13 M MD
Hamilton 10 M MD
Louisa 5 F MD
The initial letters of 'Mahlon' and 'Hamilton' in the censustaker's handwriting are nearly identical, though still just slightly different. I could see how they could be confused. But it is 'Mahlon' with an 'M'.
As I am new to this branch of the Charltons, I was wondering where the name 'Usher' came from. Has that been determined yet by anybody? And I do not know about Nan Mykel's site. Where is that?

Yes, that is *very* helpful!! You knew that Marcus was in central Missouri, which matches my proven ancestor Marcus. So I think this is definitely the family I am interested in. I would like to compare more detailed notes with you on sources and documentation. Or am I reading your posting correctly and everything you have came from "Western Maryland Genealogy", Vol. 6, No. 3 1990? If so, I can take a look at that then, I think, at my library. If not, we can discuss things privately (<gillisp(a)earthlink.net>) if you prefer or on the list. I don't know how much of what I have you would also like to see.
According to Graff researchers, the Sebastian Graff you describe appears to be the brother of the George Graff who married Mary Charlton. Their father (from Lancaster Co PA) was also named Sebastian. The Charlton marriage dates I have match better with the other notes Kathy posted on this board.
Interestingly, Marcus Graff's daughter married a Charlton in Missouri. But as far as I have found, there is no direct connection with the Charltons in Maryland. I suppose they found it just as surprising...

I have the 1850 MD Frederick Co, Jefferson dist. census, #140-145:
John W Charlton 45 M Miller $6000 MD
David 21 M Miller MD
Margaret 18 F MD
William 16 M Miller MD
Caroline 14 F MD
Mary 13 F MD
Olivia 11 F MD
Susan 8 F MD

Just a few comments on this Charlton link. I also saw you note on Nan's site. The Frederick County Historical Society is probably your best source. In bible records of Charlton Family is listed "George Graff and Mary E. Charlton married June 26, 1811 Wednesday. "
Alsolisted: John U. Charlton and Elizabeth Beatty married Sept. 26, 1790. Basil Norris and Elizabeth married Sept. 2, 1819 and he married Jane Charlton Nov. 28, 1822 (Elizabeth died Oct. 25, 1820 age 29y4m5d. John Delaplane and Sophia Charlton married Oct. 21, 1819, Wm T. Dyer and Catharine Charlton married July 26, 1824, John Charlton and susan Kemp married May 31, 1825 and Mahlon Talbott and Louisa b. Charlton married March 29, 1832. Jane Norris death date is May ? unreadable,
Also listed in Church records for Bail Norris are children:
son Henry J. b. June 24, 1837 died 1 July 1862 and daughter sophia R. age 5 months died no date Basil died Feb. 1865, Jane May 1871. Mt. Olive Church ?
Hope this helps.

Hi all...Happy May Day!
Do any of you remember when this day was celebrated with May Poles and
flowers left on the doorsteps of friends and neighbors? It was such a lovely
custom...I hope it is still being done by children somewhere today.
It has been awhile since we've had a roll call, so please join in and share
with us information on the last CHARLTON ancestor you researched. Use the form
shown below in your roll call response, and include as many names, dates and
locations for this person or generation as you can. Please remember to change
