I have a Richard Swain married to Ann Charlton that lived in Bertie County, NC. Which Richard Swain????
Unfortunately there were maybe three Richard Swains and they can be confused by those of us that don't know much about them.
There was a Richard Swain born( ?) and died April 1682 (not sure if this is fact) married to an Elizabeth?
Did he have a son named Richard(nothing on him), and a son named John who married Mary Weare?
And then a great grandson of Richard( who died in 1682 )
born abt 1706...
Help is greatly appreciated.
Susan

Whoa Peter! You're ahead of me here! Who is Sarah Kyle? And how come you've been able to check the story at wearside online? I've just contacted them this weekend and was given a right load of blather and basically advised to go and read books...
Can you e-mail me direct so we can discuss this?

Keren, I remember I've seen your name before in posts about your dastardly relative James Charlton who may or may not have stolen the rent money of Kirkley Hall. I've checked that story at wearsideonline, and one thing strikes me - the mention in that account of Sarah Kyle as one of his acquaintances.
A Sarah Kyle born c.1784 was the grandmother of my James Charlton. But the crime happened in 1809, and this Sarah Kyle had already married Henry Charlton two years previously.
All just coincidence? or are our two families somehow connected?
Regards,
Peter.

Monkwearmouth. His parents were Henry Charlton (1817-48), from Ponteland, Northumberland, and Margaret Broom (b.1821). The Brooms were from Monkwearmouth. I've not confirmed this for myself, but my father's cousin sent me a scan of an 1880 copy of their 1840 marriage certificate, so I assume it's right.

Peter.

My GGG Grandparents are JOSEPH CHARLTON & MARY PRICE who married 1846 in Hunstanworth,Durham England.
Their children (that I know of so far) are:
MARY ANN CHARLTON b.circa 1849 Allendale,Northumberland,Eng. Married JOHN BELL in 1871.
EDWARD b.circa 1854 Allendale, Northumberland, Eng (My GG Grandfather) married MARTHA FLETCHER in 1875 in St Catherine’s Church, Durham, Crooke County, Northumberland, Eng.
DAVID CHARLTON b.circa 1857, Married ELIZABETH ? in England
THOMAS CHARLTON b.circa 1859 Durham, Eng. Married MARY ANN BARRY in 1885 at Ashfield, NSW, Australia.
JOSEPH CHARLTON b.circa 1863. Married MARGARET HOBBY in 1893, Oberon NSW, Australia.
Their immigration details are:
My GG Grandfather EDWARD CHARLTON came to Australia 1879 on the “LA HOGUE” with his wife MARTHA(nee Fletcher) and children MARY E and SARAH. They settled at West Wallsend in NSW where they had another 8 children.
MARY ANN CHARLTON who married JOHN BELL came to Australia 1884 on the “ABERDEEN” with her husband JOHN and children ESTHER ANN, MARY JANE, MARTHA, JAMES, JOHN and EDWARD. A relative named MARTHA CHAPMAN aged 66, travelled with them.
DAVID CHARLTON and his wife ELIZABETH came to Australia in 1881 on the “GLAMIS” with his two brothers JOSEPH CHARLTON and THOMAS CHARLTON. A relative WILLIAM CHAPMAN travelled with them.
Many years ago a relative told me that there were 2 brothers Thomas and Joshua CHARLTON and that one of them had gone to New Zealand….I have no idea if this is true as I have no proof...as yet :-)
I also don’t know the connection between the CHARLTON’s and the CHAPMAN’s.
If anyone knows of this particular CHARLTON family, I’d be grateful to hear of anything.
With Kind regards and warm wishes

I am searching for info on Jane Ann Charlton. By newspaper account of her death; she was born Feb 27, 1852 in Pettonfell, County Durham, England. She married Elijah Allen and they lived 42 years in Renovo, PA until her death Dec 16, 1910. I can only assume she came to the US before 1868 or 69. She had 16 children, but only 5 lived to become adults.Bessie lived in OH and married Thomas Windburn. Charles Richardson, froze to death on Lake Erie in 1909. Another daughter married a Charles Long; and my husband's grandfather was William Allen. The last son listed is Walter Allen.

I'm interested in tracing descendants of my gt gt grandparents James Charlton (1840-1917) and Isabella Brown (1840-1883), of Monkwearmouth, Sunderland. Particularly interested in tracing descendants of their son Thomas Charlton (born 1866) and his wife Elizabeth (born 1868, maiden name probably Parkinson), who had (at least) 6 daughters: Elizabeth, Mary, Susan, Ammora (?), Sarah, Norah. Also interested in any descendants of their son James (1869) and his wife Esther Ainsley (1869) who had a daughter Genevieve in 1898. Finally, also interested in descendants of their son Robinson Bland (1880-1948) through the male line, via sons Robinson Bland (1907) or Arthur (possibly called James instead).
Regards,
Peter.

I was wondering if anyone can help me find the above person in the 1861 UK census living in north Durham, possibly in or near Tanfield. He was married to an Elizabeth (née Elliott) and they would have had a daughter, Ann, aged about 6 or 7. In 1854 they were living in Tanfield Lea, Tanfield, Co. Durham. Many thanks.

What is the time frame you're researching? The Charltons I'm researching
seem to be Ulster-Scots who came thru the port of Philadelphia before 1735.
Thomas Charlton died about 1743 in Chester Co, PA and his wife Alice died
about 1756 in Frederick Co, MD. They had 11 children born before 1743. They
were related to some Charltons and Ushers in Philadelphia around 1760-1790.
I'll be on vacation for a couple of weeks but you can contact me after Jan
20 if you think we connect at: Lorelei(a)Kennedy-Rockwell.com

Dear Michael,
I have seen your postings over the last couple of years and I was wondering if you had tried the British 1901 census at www.census.gov.pro.uk If you are right about Ernest's age then he would have been a young lad in 1901 probably living with his parents and brothers and sisters. This would help you tremendously in your search for relatives and ancestors.
Best Wishes,
Keren Charlton
