James Glover Charlton was my grandmother's brother. His father was James Joseph Charlton ( born in Athens,Al ). His mother's name was Lena Jane Hill. Uncle Glover had one sister, my grandmother, Effie Karl Charlton Ferguson. His brothers were: Daniel Dexter Charlton, Clarence Charlton, and Ernest Charlton.
James Joseph Charlton had the following siblings:
Tobe Charlton, Jennie Charlton, Nancy Charlton, Betty Charlton.
Lena Jane Hill Charlton had the following siblings:
Oscar Hill, Tom Hill, and Fannie Hill.
Whose child are you? I visited Uncle Glover and Aunt Betty alot as a child. Their granddaughter, Mary Frances ( Peanut) lived with them. They lived in West Helena next to their daughter, Geneva. They also had a son, J.P. Charlton.
Hope this helps, I have been trying to track down the Charlton and Hill family, but to no avail.
Hi all: Thought I'd try again to find a link to my Charlton roots. An overview of my research follows. I have a lot more detailed info & would enjoy sharing.
My g. g. grandfather, JOHN CHARLTON (c, 1821) arrived in the US sometime between Jan. of 1846 & June of 1847 from Ireland. Word of mouth states " an Orangeman from County Cork.) SARAH, his daughter was born in Ireland, my grandfather, JOHN WILLIAM was born in the US. Word of mouth said Hartford, Conn. His death certificate says Kentucky & there is a Hartford in Kentucky.
John Charlton & wife, ALICIA ( Carter or Healy or Ormsby ) had a farm in Grey Co. Ontario. near Chatsworth & Owen Sound. The history book of the area says they also built an Orange Hall.
The children were: SARAH JANE c. 1846; JOHN WILLIAM c. June 1, 1847;
CARTER ORMSBY c 1850 died 2/28/1879 (& left widow Mary & 4 year old son HERBERT) ALICIA c. 1854 ; WILLIE c. 1854; (twin) missing in 1871 census ; VICTORIA c. 1860 ( missing in 1871, 1881 census) ARABELLA c.1961: EMMILY c. 1864; THOMAS HENRY c. 1865.
I have a lot of documents & sketchy history of their life in Ontario & the history of my grandfather, John, but I hope one day to trace their life back to Ireland. I also have records of some of the descendants of their children to share and word of mouth stories of Ireland which were handed down
Does anyone recognize this Charlton family? Thanks, Mary Lou Fiander

Don't know if you've seen this site, but it gives a history of the Charlton family in North Shields
http://members.rogers.com/trwatson/Charlton/charlton.htm
I haven't found any links to my family of Charltons (Cornelius and Grace c1760's - Gateshead) but it's interesting reading.
IF ONLY IT WERE THAT SIMPLE ?
There is plenty charltons left in northumberland and still persecuted to
this day, you dont want to know of the horrors commited especially in the
1960s to the remaining charltons in the north of england, the uropean court
of human rights is a fudge like the rest of british politics and the uropean
union,
david charlton.
ps it must be nice to grow up unaltered like nature intended instead of
being fucked up by the galton institute and walter freeman and the uk
govenment etc etc
i once heard a drug smuggler say on tv you can imprision me but you will
never break my spirit, ha ha ? my spirit was broken at age 8 by
northumberland county council look up the nobel prize winner from 1950.to
see how.
god save our queen.
from a charlon, wallace, scott, decendant who did not leave early enough and
get a witness protection programme,
ps look up the rest of border reiver decendants in northumberland to see
what horrors were commited in the enslavement programme by our kind country.

Coincidence or fate? Did I mention that I have a birth certificate for my g grandfather Thomas Hall and that his parents were Hannah Charlton and William Hall? Thomas was born 1855 Thornely/Tow Law. I paid someone to search the 1861/1871 census for that area and they disappeared from there. Family tradition holds that William Hall danced at Lumley Castle which is Chester le District. At the same time I have other surnames all centered around Durham and Northumberland.yet. I tried the new census site. It is being introduced in phases. I can't get to it for another month!

Jan/Karen,
Sorry to throw in another John Charlton (or several).
I am having great difficulty tracking down my paternal line but recently obtained my great grandfather's birth certificate.
Robert was born 15 July 1851 in Sheriff Hill, Gateshead, Co Durham. His parents were John Charlton and Eleanor Hall - I have no further details.
I am waiting for the 1861 Durham census CD from http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/books/census/index.htm - hopefully this will shed more light!
Regards,
John.

Dear Jan,
During my own interminable search for John Charltons, I came upon one on the Familysearch I.G.I. who may be of interest to you.
Basically, he was born on Houghton Le Spring, Co. Durham on 30Jun 1797 and christened on 24 Aug 1797. What would interest you, was that his mother was called HANNAH Robinson (father John Charlton.)
I would bet money on the fact that John and Hannah probably had a daughter called HANNAH CHARLTON, as well.
I'm not sure how you would progress with this, but if you have any luck, please keep your eyes open for my John and Mary and son William!
Regards,
Karen.
