I have documented information which leads me to believe that my Great Great Grandfather was Thomas Charlton b.about 1825 Ireland,
his wife was Louisa or Anna Hesse b'about 1830 Ireland. They arrived in Canada sometime between 1845-1861. They first settle in Freelton, Ontario (Flamborough Township) near Hamilton Ontario. They had a total of nine children, two of which were sons John Henry Charlton b.1858 & Thomas Charlton b.1860
Sometime between 1871 and 1873 they moved to Redford Township Michigan (100 acre farm) where their last daughter Rozella was born (1873).
John Henry Charlton moved to Essex County,Windsor-Sandwich ,Ontario, Canada about 1900 with his wife Ella McNeil b.1863 Michigan and his two sons Sylvester Leo Charlton B.1882 Michigan (wife Marie Agnes Mulleavey) and John Henry Charlton b.1884 Michigan.
John Henry Charlton b.1884 (wife Eva Deziel) was Postmaster in Sandwhich for many years there -about 1905 to 1945. I am searching for more information on the family, In particular information concerning Thomas Charlton of Redford Michigan. It has been said that Thomas arrived from Ireland with two other brothers.( 1861 Canada census also shows a Patrick Charlton b.about 1799 in household - may be father to Thomas ). Thomas Charlton and Louisa(Anna)Hesse have a total of 9 Children - 1. Mary Ann Charlton (F)b.about 1852-53 Canada. -2. Sabrina (Subina)(F) b. 1855 Canada. -3. John Henry Charlton (M)b.1858 Canada 4.Thomas Charlton (M) b.1860 Canada. -5. Sarah Louise (F) b.1862 Canada -6. Christina Charlton (F)b. 1865 Canada. -7.Teriesa (Tresa) Charlton (F) b. 1868 Canada -8.Anastasia (Anna) Charlton (F) b.1870 Canada - 9. Rozella Charlton (F) b.1873 USA Michigan

Dixie, I find myself in a situation similar to yours with Mary. I think that I have a connection with the Charlton in my family files and the names that you have posted. My Charlton is Mary Margaret Charlton. She married David Hull in McLean Co, Illinois. However, the census data states that she was born in Pennsylvania. I know that her husband's family was actually from Washington Co, PA, so perhaps the families knew each other before moving to Illinois. She married David in December of 1875. I have just ordered their marriage record, so may know more soon. If you feel that there is a connection, please let me know. If, however, you know that this definitely is NOT a connection, also please let me know. Thanks! Dave

Lorraine, whilst I dont see any link, I came across 2 census entries which show Chaltons moving east away from Bethnal Green.
George Charlton is shown living with his parents in the 1851 census at 18 Wellington Row, Bethnal Green, age 23, unmarried, Hand Loom Silk Weaver.
In the 1881 census he is living at Pelly Road, West Ham, Essex, age 53, married, birthplace Bethnal Green, occupation Book Trimming Maker Binder.
Living with him is his wife, Mary Ann and their daughter, Alice.
Now this is not much of a move, West Ham is now part of Greater London and only a few miles down the railway tracks, but shows the drift as previously discussed.
Cheers,
Mick.

Bethnal Green is in the East End of London and some areas were very squalid and crime ridden. Brentford, Essex lies to the east of London and it is quite possible that some of the Charltons moved that way to get away from the fast growing metropolis, I have other families in my tree that moved east from Bethnal Green. I only have 2 generations of Charlton in my tree; William and Harriet had 4 children (all born in Bethnal Green) William b1824, Ann b1825, George b1828 and Caroline b1835 who was my GG Grandmother. All children were still living with their parents in Bethnal Green in the 1851 census at 18 Wellington Row; the father and 3 of the children giving their occupation as "Hand Loom Silk Weaver". Are you looking at dates similar to these?
Hope this might help,
Mick Lewis

I hope this does not add confusion to your search. It appears that there where at least 2 Robert Charlton's living in Dublin twp, Bedford county @ 1800. The 1797 tax records show a Robert as a Single Freemen. The 1802 & 1804 tax records show 2 Robert Charlton's, one listed under Single Freemen. In 1805 & 1806 there are also 2, however the one listed under Single freemen is shown as Robert Charlton - of James. There is a James Charlton that appears 1804 - 1808. Pretty tough to get any sense of relationships. There is a Samuel Charlton who appears in this area early and may be the father of many of the others. I am trying to identify Thomas Charlton who married Elizabeth McClain @ 1809.

Looking for anyone who may have information on this individual in their Charlton records.
Robert Charlton married Phoebe Holland sometime about 1810 either in Bedford or Fulton County Pennsylvania, and moved to Greene County, Ohio by 1820, then 1840 in Wayne Co. The 1850 census for Ohio, Ashland Co., Mohican Twp.(formerly in Wayne County) shows Robert Charlton age 77 born in Ireland, and his wife Phoebe was age 66 born in NJ.
Phoebe's parents were Thomas & Ann Holland who moved from NJ to Bedford/Fulton County Dublin Twp, PA around 1806. There were many Charltons living in Bedford County/Dublin Twp. on the 1810 Census including a Thomas, James, and Samuel Charlton that may have been related to the Robert I am looking for.
Would appreciate any information.
