I only wish I had searched the telephone books when I was in Northumberland, England in 1989. I had not started doing the family history at that time and did not know the extent of the Charlton family in Northumber - the name is almost as common as Smith there. I now have my line of the family back to 1700 and have leads to get back another one or two generations.

The telephone company for Winnipeg is MT&T. For Montreal it is Bell Canada, so it sounds like maybe you're right with Bell.

Thanks Glen
Before coming to Wisconsin I lived in Taiwan for a year where I taught in an American School. Iam currently teaching at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. I was in PA two years ago on my way to race in ironman USA in Lake Placid NY. I have a passion for ultra distance racing. i have done 7 ironman distance races .....two at the world championship in Hawaii. Rode my bike in 8 tweny-four hour road races once riding 427 miles in 24 hours. I have Raced across Minnesota 3 times in an event that involves 400 miles biking, 50 miles running and 50 miles canoeing. Was lucky enought to win the race twice. So I am an adventure Seeker. I am interested in finding the limits of my endurance. My other passion is Traditional Bow hunting. I hunt with a long bow and wooden arrows. We eat only venosin in out house. My wife and I live on 25 acres of wooded land 40 miles from town.
Our first child is 16 months old and we Named her Tayla. I once saw a Kayla Gattenby on record from before the 1700s I liked the sound of the name and combined it with an indian name for wolf....Tayla. Our son is 3 months old and He is named Tanner James after my uncle Jim who lives in Alaska. He is a great hunter and has hunted all his life to put food on the table for his family too. Jim Gattenby is my Dads younger Brother. He has land that we moose and bear hunt that is North of Soldotna,AK. Glen you are way a head of me in knowledge about our family. I hope that I can help you find more information that gives clues to where we come from. I would be glad to have an assignment.....if you need help in an area. My e mail is gattenby(a)mhtc.net

Yes Tim I have visited Ozene and Don in their home about five years ago in Washinbgton Stste and have talked to her last year on the phe just before we visited the family in sounthern CA. last summer.
I had not heard the fact that Betty Blankinnship was dark skinned. The story I head about James William was that he was in the Dakotas when he shot a man. I have head that he was young when his father a Civil war wounded man died at an early age and that James William went to the Dakotas. Of coure the other may be true if he shot a man in Indiana.
I have a family file on my family Tree Maker Program that has alot of the information that you mentioned. One thing i do not have is the family stories passed down by the other branches of the family or copies of old records that the family has stored in an attic somewhere.
I am currently getting ready to contact several members of the family to begin agian the inquiry abour our family history.
Our family as far as we can tell landed in Philedephia in 1819 and settled in Dearborn, Co Indiana. I have a ship list with the name of a William Gattenby mentioned. If you could sent me your e-mail address I will send you the file.
I am a Minister and have been pastoring in the Church of God (Cleveland, TN). for eight years and have been ministering in churches since i was thirteen. I have lived an adverturouse life I guess as well with the moving around and being in ministry over the years and moving accoss the county a few times.I am now Pastoring in Acosta, PA about an hour and a half east of Pittsburgh in Somerset County. The county where the plane crashed.
Talk to you later.
God Bless

Glen-
I too am the Great Grand son of James William Gattenby. So you must know Ozene......who I think is your Aunt. My dad Bill has been talking to her and John Dodson.
James was married to Betty Blankenship. She was dark skinned and refered to as Fat Granny. Do you know if she was indian?or what some have said Black Irish? They had 11 children one of whom was my Grand Father and another was John your Grand Father. John William shot at a man and fled Indiana thinking he had killed him......which he did not. He had three daughters who's names were Lizzy,Maude and Marcy, their mother was Carrie Roush. My Dad say he knows of you and asked if you are a Minister? Let me know if my info is correct or if you have any more that you could add. My Dad Bill lives in Washington State. I live in Wisconsin. I live a rather adventerous life and wonder if any past Gattenby's have done the same. Seems that so much of who we are and what we have done becomes lost.......so this is why I would like to look into where we all came from.

I have had the help of a relative in Oklahoma that has trace the Gattenbys back to Dearborn Co. Indiana where they came to America abourd the ship Clio from Liverpool to Philedephia. They may have been from the Egton area but I am still looking for a link. There are Gattenbys and Gatenbys. the Gatenby name is more common. Mark Gatenby in England fells that this two TT is an American spelling. I have found TTs in England as well. The GAttenby name is English and there is a village of Gatenby in North Yorkshire England. Mark Gatenby has a website of the Gatenbys of Yotrkshire.
I am doing reserch on the family and am trying to make contact with different branches of the family to gather information. I am the Great Grandson of James William Gattenby and my Grandfather was John Leonard Gattenby and my fanther was Leonard Gattenby. I have heard similar stories as you mentioned.
Malcom: way way back, about 1730's did you have a Abraham, Jacob or
Christopher Charlton (Chalton) in you line?
Thanks

Hi Tim...
My, what an interesting story about your Gatenby/Gattenby families. Unfortunately, I have nothing on this family but the name of one Ann Gatenby, who married into my Charlton Family. I am researching the Charlton Family who originated from England into Chester Co. Pa., Frederick Co. Md. and Washington Co. Md. and have come across Ann Gatenby who was Ann Charlton. I don't know who or what Gatenby she married, but I will surely check my files and see if there is a reference to her parentage. If I should uncover anything I will let you know. Mary

Thanks Mary,
So for early Gatenby's I will look under this spelling. If you found any interesting paths in following this name I would love to hear about them. My grand father Delbert Gattenby came to California from Oklahoma. He and his wife had more then 8 children. One of whom is my Father Bill.
We have very vague stories about an ancestor coming from Europe....England or Germany......because he was fleeing the law. Another ancestor in the US possibly my Grand father's Dad left a family because he ws also running from the law and started another family in a different state.
If you don't mind my asking how did you become interested in the name?
Thanks a bunch
