The Story Tellers...
We are the chosen.
My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the
ancestors.
To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family
story and to feel that somehow they know and approve.
To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead,
breathing life into all who have gone before.
We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been
called as it were by our genes.
Those who have gone before cry out to us:
Tell our story.
So, we do.
In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood
before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the
ancestors you have a wonderful family you would be proud of us? How many
times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for
me? I cannot say.
It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do
the things I do?
It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and
indifference and saying I can't let this happen.
The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh.
It goes to doing something about it.
It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish.
How they contributed to what we are today.
It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or
giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family.
It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation.
It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us.
That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do.
With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we
are them and they are us.
So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one
called in the next generation to answer the call and
take their place in the long line of family storytellers.
That, is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young

My line is Henry Huddleston,Sr. He came from Leeds, England, I believe and settled in Bucks Co. Pa. and so far as I know migrated to WV. The Family that is. Anyway I am from this line,my grandmother being a Huddleston. kThere are many many relatives and I have just started researching with some luck. Please let me know if this is any help. Thanks.
Anne,
I'm not sure if your message was in reply to my inquiry regarding a
Samuel Charlton in England. But I think there is a possibility we may
be speaking of the same Samuel.
If it is the same Sam, he may have had two wives. The Sam I am looking
for was born around 1860. He was living in London in 1896. He went to
Carnarvon, Wales, in 1896 and married Ellen Pierce, but returned to
London. If they lived together as a married couple, it was very brief.
The marriage certificate shows his name as Sam Charlton, age 36,
residence London, occupation Painter. father Alfred Charlton. In the
Vital Records Birth Registers, I only found one Samuel Charlton between
1859 and 1861. This was Samuel Doncaster Charlton, born in
Nottinghamshire on Jan. 18, 1860, mother Elizabeth Charlton, no father
listed. In the 1861 Census, I did not find him or his mother.
When you tried to trace your family in the 1881 Census, what area were
you looking in? Do you have the date when your Samuel Charlton was
born?
My father was Edward Charlton, born in Carnarvon, Wales, 32 days after
the marriage mentioned above. There was always a mystery as to what
became of his father. I believe he simply returned to his other life,
probably in London.
Hope we can compare notes.
Barbara
Apologies if you have seen this message previously but I don't think so.
I'm new to this and was posting out to wrong address.
I am looking for the marriage of Samuel Charlton and Eliza Tomlinson in UK
pre 1894 when grandmother Lily Elsie Charlton was born. Have been unable to
trace the family on 1881 census nor on IGI.
There were 11 or 12 children of the marriage possibly in Birmingham /Warwick
although it is possible Samuel originated from S Wales.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Anne
PS Am willing to do look ups on 1881 census and Vital Records Index.
I am looking for Minnie Charlton Weston from Yonkers, NY. She was born in
Kingston, NY around 1870. I am not sure when she died.
I was actually replying to a message board post on Ancestry when I wrote
the previous query. I apologize for the lack of information. I was not
aware that it would be posted to the CHARLTON list as well.

The mother of Minnie Charlton Weston was Eliza Jane Hollis. I am interested in info on Robert John Charlton and all his descendants. Please e-mail me and we can share info. I know a great deal about this family.
James, I just talked with your uncle, Robert, and we are conversing again on Thursday. He said that you lived in Florida and that you were very interested in your genealogy. I have been looking for your mother's half-brother, John Douglas Charlton, Sr., his wife Gene (Moon), and their son, John Douglas Charlton, Jr. It is my hope that I can locate John, Jr. and see if he has any family. I would like to share our BROOKS GENEALOGY with him, as he is a great-grandson of my great-uncle, Jonathan Edwards Brooks, my great-grandfather being his brother Milton Brooks. I would appreciate hearing from you and sharing information if you wish to. My E-Mail address is: ralphebrooks(a)earthlink.net - my address is: 214B Main Street, Foxboro MA 02035-1321, telephone: 508-543-4120. I am still working, at 72, but am home most evenings when I am not out doing research at the library. Love to hear from you. Sincerely, Ralph E. Brooks
I have some Charlton's that lived in New Jersey and 1 that lived in
Philadelphia for awhile.
Edgar and Marie Charlton lived in New Jersey and their daughter Ardith
Elizabeth Charlton lived in Philadelphia with her husband Donald Mason.
(dates range from 1949 - 1970)

Has anyone found a Sam Charlton, born in England around 1860? He was living in London in 1896. Possibly his father was Alfred. He is my grandfather. Thank you.
