Surname: Charlton, Bundy
-------------------------
Searching for ancestors of Annie C. Charlton and William Ozra Bundy both
born in Ohio. They were married 5 Sep 1868 in Clinton County Ohio. They
had one son Oliver Charles Bundy born 5 Apr 1879 in Kellog (Jasper Co)
Iowa. I know there was anther son, but don't know his name. Oliver married
Elizabeth Hendershott in Nebraska, she died after giving birth to my husbands
mother in Grand Island in May 1912. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Deb,
Sorry, My Charlton's were from the Corbridge/Hexham area. It's not far
from Newcastle, but when you're a Charlton in that area, you're one in a
million.
Sorry,
Marg

Do you know if by any chance there was a Richard in amongst your lot?
My father John Charlton was born in 1918.
His father, also John was born - if he didn't lie about his age to get into
the army - in 1891.
His father, we think, was born in the 1850's. We have found a Richard
working in the mines at the age of 12 in South Shields.
My father was born in Tavistock Place in Sunderland. His mothers name was
Mary - nee McHugh.
I am trying to find information on my grandfather through his war records.
He lost an eye in the first world war and was pensioned off. It seems
amazing to me that, although all info points to him being born in Sunderland,
I cannot get a birth certificate for him. My sister is 12 years older than
me and has a lot more details. She had no hesitation in confirming his birth
place. But then again, my grandma on my mothers side had 12 children all of
whom were convinced she was born in Nottingham when in fact she was born in
Ulverston in the Lake District!!
Difficult to find info as there are so many Charlton in the Northeast.
It would be great if there was any link. Fingers crossed.
Let me know.
Regards,
Sue Batchelor - nee Charlton
ps I support Bolton Wanderers and we have a Simon Charlton playing for us -
guess where they are from!! >>

<< On 1881 census my Richard was 15. So my dates were a bit adrift.
Funny though, my father had two brothers one called Jim - the other was
Frank.
The 1881 census gives Richards father as John aged 64 married to Ann. Son
Martin. Looks like daughter Alace A. (?) strange spelling, was married to a
David Carruthers. All living at 50 Corstorphone, Westoe, Durham.
Hope there's a connection - this family history stuff is hard work!!

Do you have a Frank Charlton? My grandfather Frank was born in1854 in Durham
England. His parents were William and Jane Charlton and he had siblings by
the name of John and Sarah. Frank and his father were coal miners.

Deb,
Yes I have two John Charlton's in my family tree and I also have Thomas,
John, and a Bella. Dates don't quite tie in and they are from two branches
of my Charlton family tree but may be connected.
I have a John Charlton born 1855 I think in Co Durham. He had a brother
Thomas Edward Charlton born 1867 in Newfield Co Durham, and a sister called
Isabella born 1876 in West Pelton Co Durham, there was other brothers/sisters,
Matthew born 1857, William born 1859, Joseph born 1865, Ann born 1870 and
Mary Elizabeth borm 1872. Their parents were a Joseph born 1827 Whickham,
wife's name Ann? Joseph's parents were Elizabeth Charlton born 1792 Whickham
unmarried and my GGG Grandmother and partner George Golightly. Elizabth's
parents were Edward Charlton born 1740
and Elizabeth Gofton married 1777 Whickham.
The other John Edward Charlton was born 1876 Coxlodge(North Tynside)brothers,
Robert born 1878, Micheal born 1881, and William born 1885, sisters Isabella
born 1876, Mary Elizabeth born 1880, and Ester Ann born 1874. There parents
were Edward Charlton born 1843 Whitley and Ester Ann Lowes born 1848 Gateshead.
Edwards brother was Ralph James Charlton born 1854 my Great grandfather
a railway locomotive driver.Their parents were Edward Charlton born 1815
Marley Hill Co Durham and Mary Holmes born 1816 Shilbottle Northumberland.
Edwards mother was the unmarried Elizabeth mentioned earlier and father
was John Hedley born 1795 Collierly near Lanchester Co Durham. Hope this
lot makes sense.

Matthew Charlton was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne England in 1863, the son of
Thomas and Ann [nee Rutledge] Charlton. He worked as a carpenter in a coal
mine.
In the 1880's he emigrated to Queensland, Australia where he worked as a
carpenter at a gold mine at Mount Shamrock.
Mount Shamrock town has gone now, but does anyone have an interest in the
gold mining times?
Matthew married my great aunt, Mary Colley, daughter of George and Sarah,
[nee Robinson] Colley, on the 19th of July 1890 in Wesley Parsonage,
Maryborough.
Mary was a domestic servant from Salford, Lancashire, who left Southampton on
the 17th of July 1899, on "The Scottish Lassie" arriving in Maryborough on
the 10th of November. Some trip!
"The Scottish Lassie" seemed to specialise in voyages to and from England and
Maryborough, I'd like to hear from anyone who has an interest in her.
The Charltons had three children, Thomas Leonard, and Percival, born in
Maryborough, and Elsie May, born in Mount Steadman.
The boys served in the Australian Imperial Force during WW1 where Thomas lost
his right arm, and the army lost Percy, - he went AWOL, and the army never
caught up with him.
I have records of relatives to the present date, and would like to know more,
names include HOWES, HERBERTSON, DAVIDSON, BROWN, PRICE, NIEMAN, HERD,
HINDMARSH, BURKINSHAW AND BROKELMAN.
Matthew died in the General Hospital Bundaberg, on the 21st of May, 1922,
and was buried in the General Cemetery there, Mary died on the 28th of
January 1934 in the Mental Hospital Goodna, and was buried at Toowong
Cemetery.
I would love to know if the graves are still there, and that SKS visited them
just to say "hello"!
I have two letters written by Mary 1890-ish,to her brother,my grandfather so
if anyone would have a use for a copy, I can send a jpeg.
Regards to all,
Ian Colley in sunny! England.
Re October roll call. Here is my CHARLTON family.
Robert CHARLTON was born in Castle Ward, Newcastle in 1845.
He was baptised in Gosforth on 17th August 1845.
The family moved to Grimsby,Lincolnshire and Robert was married and widowed with one son, Alfred.
He remarried on the 8th July 1874 in St. James Church, Grimsby.
His wife was Emma Blinkhorn who was born in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire in 1853.
Robert and Emma CHARLTON had the following children, Helen, George (my grandfather), who was born in 1876 and died in 1953, Mary, Emma, William and possibly a Lily or Lillian.
Robert Charlton died about 1914 and his wife Emma in 1920.
Part 2.
This family had to work very hard to survive in Grimsby. Robert was a Fisherman and then went to work as a coal drop labourer on Grimsby docks. Emma worked as a braider ( a maker of fishing nets ). Although extremely honest and hardworking, in later life Robert and Emma lived in Hope Street, one of the poorest areas of Grimsby. After Robert died, Emma took to drink and it was said that she roamed the streets of the town in a drunken and distraught state. She eventually died in Scartho Road Workhouse, disowned by all but one of her children. A sad tale but times were hard in those days and there would be many other people in the same position as Emma Charlton. The hard life certainly took its toll on people.

Hello everyone,
October's roll call will focus on just one generation of your CHARLTON
family. It will be a twofold project, including data and also a bit of
'color.'
1. Select one family -- husband, wife, and children -- and give whatever
birth, marriage, or death dates and locations you may have for each one of
them.
The second step is optional, but I hope you'll find it interesting.
2. Share with us what you have learned about this family...have there been
any stories passed down through the generations? You may choose one family
member to feature, or the family in general. Has your research turned up
clues to their daily lives? How were they affected by wars, the weather, or
by the frequent and sometimes deadly epidemics? Did they live their entire
lives on the same land where their parents lived, or did they join others in
search of a better life elsewhere?
This Roll Call is for the full month of October, so take your time and post
when you're ready, but I do hope that each of you will participate. We all
collect and record the names, dates, and places for our families, but the
stories give them life!
Don't forget to replace the subject line with the name of the head of
household of the family you choose -- no one wants to see a mailbox full of
'roll call'!
I will leave you with a thought to ponder...a hundred years from now, what
will be the stories told about YOU? [gasp!]
