Hi all,
Another of my long-winded, rambling requests for advice is about to start. You might want to get yourself a cup of tea before we begin!
To start with, the usual warnigns about my data applies. I'm using the IGI and other online indexes as the backbone of my own database. Therefore, it's not complete and may be wildly inaccurate. I don't know for sure unless you tell me!
I have the marriages of two William CHARLESWORTHs as follows:
10 Dec 1782, Scarcliffe DBY, William CHARLESWORTH & Elizabeth STARKEY
(IGI Patron submission)
02 Dec 1788, Upper Langwith DBY, William CHARLESWORTH & Ann CHARLESWORTH
(ditto)
Both couples had their children christened in Upper Langwith. I've seen the christenings on both the IGI and on images of the Langwith PRs that someone else has kindly shared with me.
The known children of William & Elizabeth are:
1784, William (PR only)
1785, Thomas (PR only)
Both sons moved on to Mansfield NTT parish.
The known children of William & Ann are:
1789, John (moved on to Lincoln)
1791, James (died 1792)
1792, George (lived in Pleasley, Shirebrook and Sookholme)
1794, Jonathan (stayed in U Langwith)
1797, Peter (ditto, despite being removed to Scarliffe!)
1800, Job (ditto)
My problem is matching up the (older) Williams up to christenings in the area. Assuming, of course, that they came from within a 15 mile or so radius of the village that both lived in, as there are possibilities somewhat further away.
Of the records I have found, I have the following two christenings on the IGI:
22 Jan 1758, William CHARLESWORTH, Bolsover DBY, son of Richard & Mary
15 May 1758, William CHARLSWORTH, Upper Langwith, son of William & Anne
Other children of Richard & Mary are:
1753, Elizabeth
1765, Anne
1768, Mary
1770, John
Other children of William & Anne are:
1757, Alice
1760, Elizabeth
1761, Thomas
1766, Anne
1769, John
1772, George
I have, tentatively, linked the William married in 1788 to the WIlliam christened in Upper Langwith. Basically, just because the children of this family were the first set of offsrping (of a WIlliam of this age) that I ran into. With the sons of the 1782 marriage crossing over the border into Nottinghamshire, they didn't "appear" to me until I started looking at 1881 and 1851 census data from a wider area. Just on those grounds, I can't be certain of my earlier match-up of William christening and marriage.
And just to add a further layer of confusion, this is how it looks when you start to apply the "lines" as I use them on my web-site (http://www.geocities.com/journeymouse/Genealogy/Families/Charlesworth.html). The Upper Langwith WIlliam is of the "Gazette" line. The William christened in Bolsover belongs to the "Black Bull" line. He is, interestingly enough, the first cousin of the Ann CHARLESWORTH of the second marriage, who is also of the "Black Bull" line. This is assuming I've picked the right Ann to be the bride; if someone else's work is correct, this Ann should actually be the sister of the "Gazette" WIlliam (in which case, she can only marry the "Black Bull" William of the two, anyway!).
I really, really wish they'd used more unusual names!
Any suggestions?
Regards,
Jo

Updated weekly
Hi All,
Please forgive the cross-posting - it's just slightly easier than sending this out several times!
I've been updating the web-site again and have had toime for a brief foray into thew CHARLESWORTH families again.(http://www.geocities.com/journeymouse/Genealogy/Families/Charleswo...
Basic changes only, but the following may be of interest (taken from the front page of my site):
"The piece of information I got the biggest kick out of was finding that William CHARLESWORTH (born c. 1818, Upper Langwith) was listed as the innkeeper at the Black Bull in Bolsover on the 1851 census (he was living on Hill Top, Bolsover). Although my 3 x great grandfather, Richard CHARLESWORTH of the "Black Bull" line, has been listed as the proprietor as late as 1842 of the same establishment, I've only ever found him on census returns as an Agricultural Labourer or Quarryman. I've known this for a while, but hadn't checked out who was in charge of the Black Bull on the census data.
"And for completeness' sake, the William CHARLESWORTH mentioned above is a descendent of both the "Gazette" and "MASON" lines. His wife, Sarah HARDY, was actually descended from the "Black Bull" line and was Richard's third cousin twice removed.
"I have also found census records listing my first Isaac CHARLESWORTH as born in Ashover. The Richard CHARLESWORTH who heads up my "Duckmanton" line is also originally from Ashover and both lines feature stone masonry rather heavily. I've found a third Ashover CHARLESWORTH stone mason in Bolsover area for the 1851 census. I don't think these are coincidental but Ashover records are somewhat few and far between online so I have no way of joining them up so far."
Enjoy what's left of your weekend!

Hi, Not one of mine, nearest I can get is 1824 but I know he stayed in the Hepworth area and didn't have a son called Jonathan. I notice on the IGI there is a William born to William and Elizabeth in 1818, is this yours? There is a marriage entry for a William Charlesworth to Betty née Kaye in 1798 at Kirkburton, their son David born 1806 at Foster Place, Hepworth married one of my family.
Best wishes
Tina Charlesworth

I have a William Charlesworth in my tree but his DoB is 1826 and far as I can tell he and his wife had no issue.
There are many Charlesworth families in the Hepworth/Jackson Bridge/Fulstone areas which does cause a fair amount of confusion at times.

Roger
