It's been awhile. Am still looking for gfather info. So in the hope that there is something new here goes again...
Looking for birth, marriage and/or death records on Joseph Charlesworth of Kennebuck County circa 1860-1910. There is an earlier Joseph who may have been his father.
Thanks for listening.

Subject: Baptism of illegitimate babies
Following some recent discussion here on this general topic, I
have just come acroos an interesting comment in a new book by
Terry Coleman, 'The Railway Navvies - A History of the Men who
Made the Railways'.
During the construction of the famous Woodhead Tunnel in Cheshire,
over 1000 men were employed for several years, and most of the
babies born to their womenfolk were illegitimate. In these early
days of registration, it is quite likely that many were neither
registered nor baptised. A few more headaches for subsequent
genealogists!
George Bamford, Curate of St James, Woodhead, recorded on 27 Feb
1842 the baptism of Sarah, daughter of Thomas and Margaret
Nicholson, the father being described as Head Engineer. The next
entry, exactly one month later, on 27 March, was rather different.
It registered the baptism of George, son of Henry Wilkinson and
Martha Charlesworth, the parents' surname being entered as
Charlesworth, and the father's occupation as labourer. Later, the
entry was altered, with the abbreviation 'Ill' added to the child's
name, the father's name and occupation were struck out and the words
'single woman' were added.
It is not clear who made the alteration, although the assumption
could be that the Vicar did not approve of his Curate's compassion
and tact!

Surname: Bower, Rutherford, Charlesworth
-------------------------
Whitewater, Walworth County, Wisconsin
Mrs. Hannah BOWER RUTHERFORD passed to her home beyond, Saturday November
28, 1901.
She was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1830; came to Wisconsin in her
youth and to Whitewater (Walworth Co. WI), in 1865. She was married to
John RUTHERFORD January 1, 1852. If she had lived until the New Year they
expected to celebrate their golden wedding. Three children and their
families
remain to comfort the father - George RUTHERFORD, Mrs. Sarah NOEL of this
city, and Mrs. Emma BAILEY of Koshkonong.
Mrs. RUTHERFORD was sick for three months, but bore her sufferings
patiently.
The funeral was held from their home on Walworth Avenue Saturday afternoon.
Rev. F. V. Stevens of the Congregational church spoke words of consolation
to the sorrowing ones. The ladies' trio of the M.E. church rendered
appropriate
music. Flowers in profusion were around the loved form.
James and George WOOD, of Milwaukee, nephew of the deceased, attended the
funeral. Mrs. D. HYMERS, a sister of Mr. RUTHERFORD, a niece, Mrs.(Mary)
WHITE, both of Monroe, also attended and Miss Maud LANE of Beloit
Hannah was the daughter of William BOWER and Sarah CHARLESWORTH who were
originally from Yorkshire, England.
Great site you have there Russell :-)
I'm sending this on to my surname lists .. seems they are
all mentioned at least once.
Cheers Jane

Morning Martin,
Tell me what you find out please ... for Bolsterstone ...
I have this:
Traditional ploughing in Bolsterstone. Annual ploughing
matches were held, alternately in Bolsterstone and
Wigtwizzle, with entrants arriving from all over England.
Thomas MILNES of Greave House won the first match in 1880.
In 1908 the winner of the Champion Prize was Luther MORRIS
of Hand Bank, Midhope, in 1910 it was won by Spencer SHAW.
Other winners included W.H. CRAWSHAW of Langley Brook and
George BUCKLEY of Fairest (four times each). The WEBSTER
family of Castle Farm, Bolsterstone won many times, Arnold
Webster won the last Championship, in 1938.
>From the book "Around Stocksbridge"
I also know that it was won by 2 CHARLESWORTHs .. Rowland
won first prize in
1893 and Wallace in 1895.
I am in touch with their Grandson Len.
Cheers Jane
