I am trying to trace details of the CHARLES family who were in business in
Benares, India during the 19th century with the firm of Tuttle and Charles.
In the 1861 census, Esther Charles (nee Watson) and two of their children,
all born in India, are recorded as boarders in Pembroke (St Mary), but her
husband William CHARLES does not seem to be present.
There seem to be a number of Charles families in Pembroke at this time, and
I am trying to find out if there is a connection with one of these families.
A number of CHARLES's worked at Tuttle and Charles, including William and
Walter.
If anyone can point me towards any information about this family in
Pembroke, I would be very grateful.
Regards
Jon
Is there anyone researching the CHARLES families in India during the 19th
century, especially those connected with the firm of Tuttle and Charles of
Benares.
Walter CHARLES (1803-1838) married Esther TUTTLE (?-?) 12 May 1828. They had
a son, Walter Tuttle CHARLES born 7 Feb 1829 at Secrole, Benares, India.
After Esther's death, Walter seems to have married Matilda (unknown) and had
a daughter Alice Anne CHARLES, born 7 Feb 1838 Secrole, Benares.
William CHARLES married Esther WATSON 12 Apr 1841 in India. They seem to
have had four children Louis CHARLES (1842-1844); Julius Guyther CHARLES
born 20 Jul 1843 Secrole, Benares; Alice B. CHARLES (born 1851); and Rosa
Henrietta CHARLES (born 1853).
If anyone has any information on these families, then I would be very
grateful to hear from them.
Regards
Jon
