Thanks John - I have been in contact with Brimfield and he isn't there or in
Holland where some of his family lived too.
It is just that Salem lived in Boston most of his life and it is thought he
died there too.
I will try the MA Vital Records Office because without the exact date they
won't let me order a death certificate.

Margie,
The citation you have Worcester, Massachusetts. 1915, volume 95 page
195 is an appropriate reference to the VR books. (I use the earlier
ones that the NEHGS has images of on their web site often enough!)
Maybe someone in Boston for the FGS show this weekend could help you.

Wanda, Thank you for the posting on Oliver Joel Charles. I have
accumulated
information on the Charles Family over a number of years. Mostly the work
of more knowledgeable researchers. None has had information preceding the
#
3 James Charles who married Tabitha Senter.
This James Charles was my fourth great grandfather. My grandmother was
Amanda Virginia Charles (Richardson). This James ca.1750-1755 and Tabitha
had
twelve children. The names clearly follow the names of your # 2 James.
They
are, Cynthia, James (my third g gf) Oliver, Susannah, Nancy, Stephen K.,
Hiram, John, Elizabeth, Solomon, Joel and Tabitha.)
Please let me say that I have been a gatherer of data. The extensive
research has been by Patricia Treadwell and much by Sybil Roberts Smith of
Oklahoma. Sybil wrote a book, "The Charles Branch of My Sunshine Tree".
I have not
corresponded with either for a few years since I have most of the
information I wanted to pass on. I do have a wealth of information from
the line of
James and Tabitha.
James and Tabitha's son James married Dorcas Miller. Dorcas was the
daughter of Peter Miller a well known person and family in Hawkins County
Tennessee.
Whenever I return to Hawkins county, I visit Mr. Neal Miller who lives on
the Old Stage Road. His home is at the site of the famous Yellow Store. He
is
about the sixth or seventh generation of Millers to live in the home.
James
and Dorcas are buried in the Charles Cemetery at Honeycutt in Hawkins
County. I often visited the cemetery and kept it clean for many years.
I fell certain that Pat still receives this Charles site and may wish to
comment. I fear Sybil may be deceased.
I would be happy to answer questions and share. I doubt if Pat would mind
but I would try to contact her before giving out all her data. Sybil's book
was published in 1983 and was not copyrighted.
Wanda, for myself I would greatly appreciate your source for #1 Oliver
Joel
and #2 James Charles and Sarah Halbert.
Again thank you so much for posting this information.

Hello Charles,
I believe that I got the data about Oliver Joel Charles from Karen Moore,
who has written more than one book about the Halberts.
The below came from two deed books: The first in VA and the second in SC.
John Cook(e) was the great-grandfather of Sarah Halbert, wife of James
Charles. She inherited some of his lands.
>From John Cook(e)
P. 253 - Deed - 18 January 1757 - James Charles And Sarah, His Wife, Of
Caroline County, Sell Theophilus Favor Land In Essex County. Deed Says That
John Cooke, Great Grandfather Of The Said Sarah Charles, Formerly Lived On -
After Death of John Cooke And His Male Heirs - 81 Acres Descended to John
Mottley, Grandson Of Said Cooke, And 81 Acres Decended to Sarah Charles And
Her Sister Mary, Great Grandchildren of John Cooke, Etc. Witness: Joel
Halbert, William Halbert and William Kidd Signed By: James Charles & Sarah
Charles
Grnv. DB D:273-274. 1796. Sarah Charles, widow of late James Charles,
agreement to divide land. Sarah now willing for estate to be divided betw.
lawful heirs- 10 children; Sarah in her lifetime to have negroes. S/ Sarah
(X) Charles Philip Evans, Obidiah (X) Wood, Oliver Charles, Joel Charles,
William Wilson, Samuel Ware, William Smith, Israel Charles, John Charles,
Zelpha (X) Charles. Israel, John & Zelpha are not of age. r 2 Aug 1796.
If anyone wants to have this tangle made clearer, I will write to you
privately as it might not be of interest to the list. Sarah Halbert is the
Sarah married to James Charles. Mary Halbert was married to William Aaron
Kidd, Jr., all of Essex/Caroline Co., VA.
The second deed is from Greenville Co., SC. James Charles having died in
May, 1781. I do not have firm birth dates for the children of James Charles
and Sarah Halbert, and it is confusing as to the the ages of Zelpha, for
instance, since her father had been dead for 15 years at the time of 2nd
deed.
Also, from Dorothy Call:
James Charles' will. is found in SURRY COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA WILLS
(1771-1827), pages 31-32.
You could say that I am a gatherer, too, Charles. I would like to fill in
some dates for Tabitha Senter.
Thanks,
Wanda

Hello all:
I am hoping there is some kind soul who can look up the exact date of death
of Salem Darius Charles who was born 1850 in Brimfield, Massachusetts and

Wanda, Thank you for the posting on Oliver Joel Charles. I have accumulated
information on the Charles Family over a number of years. Mostly the work
of more knowledgeable researchers. None has had information preceding the #
3 James Charles who married Tabitha Senter.
This James Charles was my fourth great grandfather. My grandmother was
Amanda Virginia Charles (Richardson). This James ca.1750-1755 and Tabitha had
twelve children.
I do have a wealth of information from the line of
James and Tabitha.
James and Tabitha's son James married Dorcas Miller. Dorcas was the
daughter of Peter Miller a well known person and family in Hawkins County Tennessee.
Whenever I return to Hawkins county, I visit Mr. Neal Miller who lives on
the Old Stage Road. His home is at the site of the famous Yellow Store. He is
about the sixth or seventh generation of Millers to live in the home. James
and Dorcas are buried in the Charles Cemetery at Honeycutt in Hawkins
Wanda, for myself I would greatly appreciate your source for #1 Oliver Joel
and #2 James Charles and Sarah Halbert.

Thanks,
Wanda

Jerry, yes-James Charles and Sarah Halbert were John M. Charles' parents.
I did send an email to your personal address but sometimes AOL is suspicious
of a Charter email address
and it came back to me. You can ask them to let my emails come through.
When you are here is November, let me know and we will take you to the
Charles Family Cem. It is marked "posted" and is just a little rough road to
get in...unmarked. Just email me and I will give you my tel. no.
Greenville has a good genealogy research room called the "S C Room".
Larinda, I'm sorry that we couldn't find a Charles in common. Michael, I
don't know if there is a common ancestor further back or not. I am pretty
ignorant about G.B. Thanks for getting us going again!

Hi Wanda,
Thanks a bunch for the info. You've supplied me with a new generation and
how the family got into SC. Did not know Barksdale was a doctor. I just
started this great project and really enjoying it.
I believe I'm using what's know as the "shotgun method".
I live in Florida but was raised in Hendersonville, NC (just up the
mountain from Greenville). I'm going up for a high school reunion in
November and
plan to go by Furman University where a lot of archives and family history
is
stored. Hope to get into Greenville as well if there are any worthwhile
records there.
Am I correct in assuming James Charles and Sarah Halbert were John's
parents?
The pictures of the graves weren't attached. Where are the graves?
I'm going to add you to my addresses and will keep you posted on what I
learn.

Hi Wanda,
Looks like we are long lost cousins of some distance because I, too am a
direct descendant of John Charles (born 1777) and Elizabeth Garrison (born 1787)
from Greenville, SC. That's as far back as I've gotten in my search, but
from there, here's the way it falls out for me:
1. John Charles married Elizabeth Garrison
2. Barksdale (Bas) Charles b. 1815 married Mary Goldsmith b. 1820
3. James W. Charles b. 1849 married Alice Harden b. 1855
(Alice obviously died or they separated, 'cause he was
living with Hannah Stone in 1890)
4. Lonnie Charles born 1893 married Nellie Honeycutt
born 1897
5. Me - Jerry Charles born 1936
The Charles Cemetery has a wealth of info. I found a lot of help there. I
managed to research it through _www.findagrave.com_
(http://www.findagrave.com)
Hope this helps...if you have anything that can help me, please let me know.

Wanda
Thanks for replying but I'm afraid that the family is not my family the
time line is off.

1. Barbara Charles b. 15 Nov 1823 Pa. married John Hoffman b. 21 May 1817 Pa
2. Rebecca Charles b. 21 Jan 1830 Pa. married Henry Zearing b. abt 1827. Pa.
3. John Charles b. 5 Jan 1832 Pa. married Henrietta Fackler b. 16 Feb 1830
Pa.
4. Christian Charles b. Abt 1833 Pa. don't know who he may have married if
he did.
5. Jacob Charles v. Abt 1835 Pa. married ??
6. Catherine Charles b. abt 1838 married John Geist b. abt 1834
7. Susanah Charles married John Long
8. Eliza married Fred Heinz/Haynes/Haines
9. Lizzie Charles (I don't know if Lizzie is a nickname or her child's name)
I hope someone on the list will look at this and say I know who they our.
Been searching for along time on this family and slowly finding the siblings
with their husbands.
Thanks for any information that any one can shedsome light on the search.

Hello,
If anyone is in the Greenville area and has not found the Charles Family
Cemetery, I did a survey on it
which will be in the new Greenville Chapter of the SC Genealogy Society
Cemetery Book. But if you want to go and see it for yourself, I will send
you the location. I descend through John N. Charles and Elizabeth
Garrison's daughter, Mary Polly Charles who married her cousin, Elias Earl
Garrison and went on a wagon train to northeast MS in 1840.
Also, I did a survey on the Old Garrison Cemetery, also to be in that
Cemetery Book. I descend from David Garrison and Elizabeth Barksdale through
their son, Charles Gregory Garrison; he was the father of Elias Earl
Garrison. That cemetery is on Old Pelzer Rd., in lower Greenville Co., SC.

G'Day members
Please take note I have recieved notice that over the coming week or so,
RootsWeb will be changing its mailing list software, affecting all the
Lists, including CHARLES-L(The MessageBoards will also be changing.)
The change is necessary because the old software currently in use is no
longer supported by the developer of the software.
Currently we are classed as a "C" (A-C are due to move 15 August, the
time might be either during Tuesday or Wednesday, depending upon what
international time zone they are using for the date of changeover).
Until there's any notice to the contrary, I am working on the basis
that it's going to happen on Tuesday.
I'll try to let you know if and/or when I know more. In the meantime
there is no reason to let any of this interrupt the important business
of the List.
The changes for subscribers will not be anything to worry about.
Significant differences to be expected:-
Most significant is the fact that you cannot be subscribed twice to
the List under a single email address. Thus if you wish to subscribe
to the CHARLES List (or any list) in both Mail mode and in Digest
mode simultaneously you will need to use two separate email addresses - one
for each mode.
The message posting mode will no longer need the "L" in the address
for posting mail to the list. However, we are told you can still
send messages to the list using the CHARLES-L(a)ROOTSWEB.COM or you
could simply use the new format CHARLES(a)ROOTSWEB.COM after the
switchover.
Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. Some listers
may need to alter their mail filters if affected by this dropping of the
"L".
The "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" commands will be a little different.
However there will be a tag line at the bottom of all list messages
for a while afterwards giving instructions for this so it shouldn't be
a problem.
To subscribe or unsubscribe, the word SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE will
need to be in the *Subject line* of the e-mail - not the body of
the text which still works at present.
Everyone will have the facility to stop mail being sent to them, and
then to turn it back on again, whenever they choose - very handy for
holiday times. This is known as "no mail mode". A change requested
by List Managers. Many listers will appreciate this rather than get
bounced off the list because your inbox fills up while on Holidays
and messages bounce back to Rootsweb and autocue the servers to
remove that address.
Digest format will be a little different. AOL subscribers will
receive a Zip file of messages but this is down to AOL rather
than Rootsweb, as I understand it.
There will be changes to the way in which bounced mailings are
handled by the system. Up to now as Admin I have usually received
copies of bounces and I could see when there was an ongoing problem
with a subscribers address. This will no longer be the case and I
will be unaware of a problem until the system disables your list
account due to the bounces.
I think that covers the main changes you'll need to be aware of but
I'll do my best to update everyone as and when there's anything more
to tell.
Anyway for now it's continue as usual.
regards
Michael Cheeseman
