I have a cousin Marion Elizabeth CHARLES nee OATES, who first married a
George LEITER of Montgomery, then she married a Robert H. CHARLES. I am
trying to find out if Robert H. CHARLES was descended from William CHARLES
Jr. and Elizabeth KENT. Was Robert H. CHARLES a Boardcast Journalist did he
normally sign off by saying The Moving Finger having written writes on. Or
signs off.

Hi Larinda,
My ggggreat grandfather was John Charles from the Luzerne County area of
Pennsylvania. The story is that the original family name was Fitzgerald and it
was changed to Charles. He was born 1778 in Northampton County and married
Magdalena Polly Wagner in 1811. They had 11 children one of which was another
John Charles born 1832. The younger fought in the Civil War and lived in
Philadelphia. I know both father and son are buried together in Vine Street
Cemetery in Hazleton, Pennsylvania. You can check out the rest of my research at
the link below. Gee, I hope maybe something may look familiar.

Sorry Norma
no info on John & Marguerite.
Russia is a new one too. Are you sure it is not King of Prussia, PA? As I
recall, this is not too terribly far from Lancaster
J
Thanks for your message. Frankly I don't know where they came from. On the
death certificate Catherine Charles surname was wrong. I didn't know there
was a King of Prussia, PA. I've been to Maryland where she was born and I
think the speech had something to do with it too because her maiden name was
given as Childs. I know this is wrong because I have the wedding certificate
and her name is Catherine Charles. She married John G. Leibold. He was a
traveling salesman that sold printing supplies. My husband said when he was
a little boy his folks would take him to Pa. and they stayed at a big house.
His father trained Beagles and they went on field trips. I have had friends
searching the Baltimore census trying to find the Charles family with no
luck. Upon her death she was buried in the Leibold plot and the cemetery
didn't have any Charles interred. She died when my husband was just 9 years
old and he didn't remember too much. Thanks for the hint I really appreciate
it

My Charles family had similar names as well. They
lived for a time in Ohio, around Warren County and
neighboring counties. They moved into western Indiana
and some into Illinois. Their names were John and
Susannah (Cumings) Charles. Among their children were
George, Jackson, Susannah, Catherine.

I think that we are seeking two different branches. I can trace a John
Charles born in (or about) 1785---beleived to be NC. Interestingly, John had
siblings named Elizabeth, Mary, Isabela (as well as Levin, Risdon, Cynthia, Elijah
& Phoebe)
Certain names were "popular" and certain names were used again and again and
again in the same family, which makes untangling the branches even more of a
challenge.
To the best of my knowledge, my Charles line moved from NC to St Clair Cty,
IL, but I am not sure of exactly when. The John in my "tree" is the son of
Elijah Charles (1751-1830). Elijah is buried in IL.
In my travels among the trees, I discovered a Charles in the original colony
of New Haven CT (est 1638-ish )....and there were Charles' in NJ (Princeton
area I think----way before 1776). The name Charles is a very common one among
those in Lancaster PA
For people in that era, with such limited modes of transportation, they sure
got around.
Sorry I can't be any more assistance
Happy Hunting
Jan
I'm looking for the John Charles Family from Pennsylvania parents. John was
born in 1832 in Pennsylvania, we do not know where. His siblings our
1. Rebecca b. 1830 married Henry Zearing son of Maritn Zearing
2. John Charles b. 1832 married Henrietta Fackler daughter I believe of
George Fackler?
3. Christian Charles b. 1833 ?? no more known
4. Jacob Charles b. 1834 no more known
5. Catherine Charles b. abt. 1838 married John GEIST
6. Susannah Charles b. ? married a John Long ?
7. Barbara Charles b. ? married a John Hoffman
8. Elizabeth Charles b. ? Fred Haines ??
9. Mary Charles b. no more known
10 Issie or Isabel b. ? no more known.
I hope to make a connection some day. It is a possiblity this family was
around the Dauphin Co. Pennsylvania area, but moved. John Charles children
were born from Pennsylvania, Princeton, Bureau co. Illinois, Dover Illinois,
Sumner Co. Kansas. Trying to pen them down to one area but did not stand
still until they moved to New Haven, Sumner Co., Pennsylvania.
I hope this sounds familiar to someone and knows more than I do.
Thanks
Larinda
