I have been researching the ESTILL county CHARLES' for more years then I
like to count. I have never been able to tied the 2 counties together. THe
Pike co., Charles' come from Micheal Charles out of NC. I do have some
Pike co., information. Mary Polly Charles' father was Philip Charles from
Estill. I also believe that Philip came from VA but never have found any
proof of this. Philip signed Polly's marriage bond. This is my opinion on
Mary & Philip due to all my research.
Mollie Charles Pawlik
I am descended from Jacob Charles, b. 1708 Dorchester Co. MD. Many of his
children were members of Nicholite sect and several of them went to NC. See
the following information.
Surnames: CHARLES, STEVENS AND SPARKS
Seeking information regarding the parents of Jacob CHARLES, b. 1708, d. 1776
in Dorchester Co., MD. Married to Mary Sparks. It is believed his father
and mother were Issac CHARLES and Sarah STEVENS. Issac CHARLES b. abt 1690,
d. 1749 in Dorchester Co., MD. Sarah STEVENS b. abt 1696.
Looking for verification that Issac is the father of Jacob.
A family story says that CHARLES ancestors came from England and Wales to
Nantucket. They were Quakers and came to Maryland from Nantucket due
religious persecution from the Puritans. I have not been able to make any
connection to Nantucket or England/Wales on their ancestors.
Jacob and Mary CHARLES had the following children:
Jacob CHARLES Jr., married to Euphama ?
Issac CHARLES, married Nancy PAYNE 21 Sep 1776
Solomon CHARLES, married Sarah ADAMS 25 Mar 1775
Levin CHARLES, b. abt 1743 Dorchester Co., MD, d. 1833 Davidson, North
Carolina 1833. Married Mary Tomlin NICHOLS abt 1771.
Elisha CHARLES, b. abt 1744 Dorchester Co., MD, d. abt 1825 Guilford, North
Carolina. Married Elizabeth MOORE abt 1780.
William CHARLES, b. 1745 Dorchester Co., MD, d. 1796 Guilford, North
Carolina. Married Leah BARTLETT 13 May 1770.
Mary CHARLES, b. 4 Apr 1746 Dorchester Co., MD. Married Johathan MARINE III
abt 1775.
Nancy CHARLES. Married ? WRIGHT.
Elijah CHARLES, b. 17 Dec 1751 Dorchester Co., MD, d. Nov 1800 St. Clair,
Illinois. Married Isabella MOORE 7 Jun 1775 in Caroline Co. MD
Betsey CHARLES, married John FLEMING 31 Oct 1787 in Talbot Co. MD
Margaret CHARLES married Thomas NORMAN.
Several of the above children of Jacob and Mary CHARLES became "Nicholites"
and migrated to Guilford Co., NC about 1778. This was a religious sect that
was similar to the QUAKERS.

The Charles' living in District 8 in Pike Co., Ky. is Coon Creek, where
George Charles settled after leaving Russell Co., Va., and Orange Co., N.C.
This line of Charles, I can answer a lot of questions. George was a
descendent of Michael Charles (Mikgol Carle), a german immigrant who arrived
at the port of Phil., Pa. , migrated to Orange Co., N.C. (present day,
Gulliford Co.). George is listed on the estate settlement of his father,
Michael. George, at that time was living in Russell Co., Va. There are
power of attorney papers filed in Orange Co., stating this. George can be
traced from N.C., to Russell Co., Va., Pike Co., Ky., Buchannan Co., Va. ,
and back to Pike Co., Ky. where he died on Coon Creek. George's son, David
settled in Buchannan CO., Va. George's son George Jr., settled in Tazewell
Co., Va. George's son Michael settled in Pike Co., Ky. (District 7 Peter
Creek) where he is buried over looking a knoll at the mouth of Smith-Carter
Hollow on Peter Creek (Phelps, Ky). George's other sons, John and Frederick
Sr., settled in Pike Co., near their father on Coon Creek. Anyone desiring
information on any of theses, may contact me personally if they like.
Charles roll call April 2001
This is a rather long email and I did attempt to break it into some sections, however since many of us are researching individuals who moved and did not leave forwarding addresses, you might be able to help some of those in one of the other sections. The last section of this post is on the book that I have made reference to.
Kentucky and Tenn Charles
Reply to: Thomas Shotton: I did manage to find Thomas Charles and Mary Elizabeth Cain in the 1870 census and they both state that they were born in Kentucky. I found this record in the District 8 Pike County Kentucky census records page 97. Elizabeth was therefore born about 1866. I would venture to guess that Elizabeth was probably born in this same area. Do you have any idea where Distict 8 Pike County is? When was her last child born? I can check the 1880 census next Saturday for Thomas Maynard and see what I can find out. (Unforgently the 1880 is not as well indexed as the 1870). Is there any possibility that Thomas was in the Civil War and there might be some records of his among the Confederate Records? Of interest with this record in 1870 Thomass younger brother Frederick also shows up, therefore indicating that this is a general area where the Charles settled, also on the same page are several others Charless including another Thomas Charles (20 years ol!
d), George W Charles (22 years old), an Allen Charles (21 years old) and a John Charles (15 years old). Given that none of these name are ones found on the list of Frederics children I would guess that they could either be the children of David (Frederics younger brother???), or of another brother of Frederic who came from Virginia with him. I found a Frederic Charles in the 1850 census for Pike County Kentucky. Frederics birthplace is listed as Virginia, his wifes birthplace is listed as Kentucky along with all of the children including one Thomas 20 years old. I am going to include the entire list of names here in case someone else on the list recognizes one of the names as someone they are looking for. Frederic Charles 44 M Farmer Virginia, Elizabeth 35 Female Kentucky, Thomas 20 M at home Kentucky, David 18 Male, Kentucky, ???hisy 17 M, Kentucky, Androius 16 M Kentucky, Harvey 14 M Kentucky, Laviey(?) 12 Female Kentucky, Nancy 8 F Kentucky, Elizabeth 6 F Kentu!
cky, Frederic 4 Male Kentucky, Allen 2 M Kentucky. Therefore given these two records I would say that you have the link established between Thomas Charles and Frederick Charles and Elizabeth McColley. I am curious about your list the parents of Frederick being George Charles and Christian Michael, and Georges parents being Michael Charles. Do you have any source on this information? (See reason for question in my response below to Pat Robertson.) Hope this has been some help to you, and if anyone wants a copy of the census pages mentioned above please email me with your snail mail address.
To: Pat Robertson. I have read over your post any number of times. I am beginning to wonder if you and Thomas Shotton dont share some ancestors. According to the census records Frederic Charles was born in Virginia about 1806. How difficult would it be for Frederics parents and Mary Ann Polly Charles parents to be one in the same? I am not clear on the distances between Pike County Kentucky and Estill County Kentucky. If so then possibly Marys parents are George Charles and Christine Michael.
To: Barb Thomas. I was not able to find an Oliver Charles in my Charles book with the correct dates.
Maryland and Penn Charles
To: Norma E. Leibold I would suggest that since you have the names of the siblings of Katherine that you attempt an SSDI search for one of those names. I attempted and found two Margueites born in Maryland one in 1893 and one in 1903. If you send off for there Social Security application you will get the names of there parents. I did not attempt a Frank.
To: Irma Charles Harrison: I was able to find Michael Charles (born 1802) in the 1850 census and according to him he was born in Delaware. Michael might have be descended from Joseph. See response below to Teddae and Clyde Charles. It is also possible that Michael was a descendant of one of the group of men listed in Roland Charles list, in particular since he has a man whose first name was Michael. See response below to Ronald Charles.
To: Teddae and Clyde Charles. Did Joseph have any other sons other than Samuel? The reason for this question is that it might hold a clue to a link between Katherine (Normas response above) and Joseph?
To Ronald Charles: The list you have of male Charles names is interesting? By any chance do you know if they are brothers?
New England and Maine Charles
To: Eileen I will be getting copies made of the pages of the book that I have.
to Dorothy: I will look at the book, see mention below, however I am now wondering if prehaps your William came from England. The other possibility is that his father was a part of the Winthrop fleet that brought many settlers over to the Boston, New England area between 1630 and 1635.
For All:
Information on the Charles book that I have made reference to:
The book that I have is titled "Freedom Calls The Charles-Weeks family and
related Names, History and Genealogy, by Nancy J. Wach in 1999. Up until
the time that I crashed my entire email list I had her email address. I do
know that as of last year about this time she was living in Greeley, Colorado
and was listed under the last name of Wach (I can not remember her husbands
first name) in the phone book. Now you ask why do I sound so hesitant about
this. She and I are descendants of the same branch of the Charles family,
both of us have the same gggrandfather a James Charles who came from Mass.
to Cayuataville, Schuyler, New York. Last year when she was writing the
book, I contributed to it, however I sent her information on my parents,
grandparents and great grandparents, and although some of what I sent her
was not complete, it did not agree with what she already had, therefore
instead of checking back with me, she went on and used the information that
she had. In order to do she had to change some of what I had sent her, and fill in the gaps. The bottom line is that the section on James Charles has several mistakes. For
that matter she disagrees with me about the parentage of James wife.
Depending on who you believe either me with a copy of James War of 1812
pension papers, or her with what ever documentation she had to support it,
which she does not state in the book, Laura Doolittle Charles was either the
daughter of one Doolittle or a different Doolittle. this is a rather long
explanation, plus the fact that she did do considerable research, for the
two paper back volumes, which she charged $56.00. I can copy out the
material on the Moss family and mail it to you. Obviously she and I are no
longer communicating, and I guess some of the problem is mine. She did not copyright the book.
There were several Charles men in the early 1700's in the Delaware-Maryland
area. Several of these men, among them: Elijah, Elisha, Levi, Levin,
Michael, William and Willis have been found in the records of the
Nicholites. This interesting sect, which saw its rise along the
Delaware-Maryland border in the early 1760's, owed its existance to Joseph
Nichols. The Nicholites progressed from being an unchurched group of
fun-seeking persons to becoming a religious society similiar to the Quakers
in belief. They were opposed to profanity and oaths, and sought the right
of affirmation rather than swearing. They were opposed to war and also
capital punishment. They were so strongly opposed to slavery that they wore
undyed clothing, to protest against the slave labor used in producing the
dye.
After the death of Joseph Nichols in 1770, his widow, Mary, married
Levin Charles. The Delaware Nicholites became smaller in number with the
migration of some of their group to North Carolina during the 1770's. By
1778, Levin and Mary Charles had moved to Guliford County, North Carolina,
and settled there among other original Nicholites. After nearly forty years
of separate experience, the Nicholites were absorbed by The Society of
Friends.
It is of interest to note that the earliest copy of a Nicholite
marriage certificate is that of Isaac Charles and Nancy Payne who were wed
in 1766 in Dorchester County, Maryland. Some sixty years later, there were
several marriages in western Virginia and eastern Kentucky between members
of the Charles and Payne families.
Those with names in capital letters are the ones I am especially interested
in finding out more about. None of the following information has been
verified by me.

I printed out and took several of the requests to the library with me yesterday and did find some information which I will be posting shortly. I am beginning to wonder if we have 3rd Charles family coming from England(?), that went to the Baltimore, Maryland area. The dates for these families are somewhat to early for out Penn. Charles, (I think that is correct, the person on the list who has all the information on the Penn. Charles' might correct me). Also would that individual please send me an email and remind me who he is and what he has. I had it in a email file, that got wipped out about 6 weeks ago. For those who have mentioned the Maine connection I will get you some information, or Greg might be able to do so. For the rest of you lets see if we can't make some links here and we are awaiting your postings. Thanks.
My grandparents: John Maynard and Pricy Smith, Martin Co., KY
Great grandparents: Thomas ("Mason") Maynard and Elizabeth ("Betty") Charles
Her parents: Thomas Charles and Mary Elizabeth Cain
Not documented:
Thomas' parents: Frederick Charles, Sr. and Elizabeth McColley
Frederick's parents: George Charles, Sr. and Christian Michael
George's parents: Michael Charles, Sr. and Catherine Unknown
My "brick wall" is finding a birth record and/or death record for my great grandmother, Elizabeth "Betty" Charles. I do not know when she died and where she is buried. She was born and married in Pike Co., KY and after her death Thomas (widowed) was living in Martin Co., KY (1900 census). I haven't begun to look for documentation for the other ancestors so any referrals to sites for censuses, vital records, etc. would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Joyce in VA
I am gathering up all the different requests that have come in and will take them with me today when I go down to the genealogy library in Albuquerque. I volunteer there every Saturday afternoon and some of the time we have very few clients, so I can work on what ever I want. This is not a huge library but for a public library it has a large amount of materials including a complete microfilm library of the census records from 1790 to 1870.
I'm new to the list, I hope I am doing this right. The CHARLES that I am
looking for is Mary Ann "Polly" CHARLES. She married William
Robertson/Robinson in Estill County KY on 20 Jan 1823. She was born approx.
1808, she and her husband and children moved to Putnam Co., IN, then on to
Boone Co., IN where William died in 1846. She followed her children to
Tippecanoe Co., IN and at that point I lost her. On the 1880 census for
Tippecanoe Co., Shelby Township, IN, she states that she was born in KY and
both her parents were born in VA. That is the last I have on her, I have
not found a death. Nor have I found the whereabouts of William and Mary
Ann's three youngest children, one of which was living with her when the
1880 census was taken.
My line descends down from William and Mary Ann (CHARLES) Robertson to
Francis Marion Robertson, born in IN, to Charles Franklin Robertson, born in
IN, to William McKinley ROBERTSON, born in IN.
Any help I can receive on Mary Ann will be greatly appreciated. I have not
proved the marriage as of yet, another researcher has a different Mary Ann
married to William, however, they have not supplied any documentation. The
marriage date and location is proper for my William - the children's
birthdates and birthplace ties in with the location. I believe she died in
IN, however, I do not find record of it in Tippecanoe Co.
William and Mary Ann had the following children:
Marlinda Jane, born 1824 KY
James F., born 3 May 1826 KY
William O., born between 1828-1829 KY
Julia Ann, born Feb 1831 KY
John Franklin, born 1 May 1832 KY
Jesse Bartlett, born 19 Oct 1835 KY
Susan, born 21 Dec 1838 IN
Francis Marion, born 19 February 1841 IN
George W., born 23 March 1843 IN
Mary Ellen, born 15 Aug 1844 IN
Robert Winfield, born 8 Feb 1848 IN
Robert was only two months old when William died. If anyone out there has
information on Mary Ann, I would appreciate your input. If you need
anything on my Mary Ann's children, I have a good deal of documented
information I would be happy to share.
Thank you for the time you've taken to read this.

Hello,
Haven't worked on this CHARLES line in a long time.
Still trying to confirm with accuracy the father/parents of Richard and
William CHARLES of Coffee Co, TN. Were they Oliver CHARLES and Elizabeth
HEATH who were married 13 May 1788 Surry Co, NC?
Thanks for any info.

I have just reviewed the list of subscribers and we are actually not just a small list of 10 to 13 any more. On the list side we have about 50 subscribes plus about 10 more on the digest side. Therefore for the benefit of the new members and of those already on the list I think it is about time for a roll call. Below is a brief version of mine.
I am direct descendent of John Charles of New Haven,
then his son John, then John, then Aaron, then Thomas, (both Aaron and Thomas were in the Revolutionary War)
then James, then Andrew Jackson Charles, then Frank. Frank was my grandfather. If possible try to stop with your grandparents. This will work unless your need information on a more recent ancestor then include as much as you can. Tell us what it is that has become your brick wall in your search, even if it is a line marrying into the Charles family. Example: I am looking for
information on Stephen and Catharine Hunt the parents of Sarah Mariah Hunt family (1844-1904), wife of Andrew Jackson Charles (1832-1917) living in the Tompkins/Schuyler county area of New York.
hi all,
i'm new to this list and fairly new to genealogy and i've hit the proverbial brick wall.... only, i lovingly refer to her as "grandma". grandma is not interested in discussing the CHARLES family - bad relationship - even though this marriage resulted in two children. the only thing she will say is that "the CHARLES' came from illinois".
here is what i have been able to find out:
leonard leon CHARLES (1917-1977)
his parents: wilbur roy CHARLES (1889-1954) and lona mae culp(1888-1961)
wilbur's parents: louis CHARLES (1857-1892) and emma lee barngrover (1858-1892)
louis' parents: george CHARLES (1806-1860) and Elizabeth Florence (1815-1860)
*** wilbur roy CHARLES was born in Buford, Ohio - died in Des Moines Co., Iowa
any help in filling in the missing pieces and/or adding/correcting to the information i have would be greatly appreciated.
blessings,
paula
