This poem has been floating around for a long time, but I thought that the
members of the Charles and Goodyear list might enjoy it.
It was the first day of census, and all through the land;
The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand.
He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride;
His book and some quills were tucked close by his side.
A long winding ride down a road barely there;
Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air.
The woman was tired, with lines on her face;
And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place.
She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table;
And she answered his questions ... the best she was able.
He asked of her children... Yes, she had quite a few;
The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two.
She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red;
his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed.
She noted each person who lived there with pride;
And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside.
He noted the sex, the color, the age...
The marks from the quill soon filled up the page.
At the number of children, she nodded her head;
And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead.
The places of birth she "never forgot";
Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not?
They came from Scotland, of that she was clear;
But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here.
They spoke of employment, of schooling and such;
They could read some .and write some .. though really not much.
When the questions were answered, his job there was done;
So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun.
We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear;
"May God bless you all for another ten years."
Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me;
As we search for the people on our family tree.
We squint at the census and scroll down so slow;
As we search for that entry from long, long ago.
Could they only imagine on that long ago day;
That the entries they made would effect us this way?
If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel;
And the searching that makes them so increasingly real.
We can hear if we listen the words they impart;
Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart.

This message is being sent to let all of you know that I have become the new
list owner for the Charles list. Since you don't get the "official"
introduction page automatically with this change I am including some of the
more important information below.
Please submit messages only in plain text, and don't submit attachments.
Many of our subscribersare using software that cannot read attachments.
Please, always use
a helpful subject line like "John Charles-Conn 1636",rather than a generic
one like "inquiry about my family line". Please give the rest of the members
on the list a brief summary of your family tree if possible. Be careful do
not include personal information on yourself.
Example: I am direct descendent of John Charles of New Haven,
then his son John, then John, then Aaron, then Thomas, (both Aaron
and Thomas were in the Revolutionary War) then James, then Andrew Jackson
Charles, then Frank. Frank was my grandfather. If possible try to stop with
your grandparents. This will work
unless your need information on a more recent ancestor then include as much
as you can. Tell us what it is that has becomeyour brick wall in your
search, even if it is a line marrying
into the Charles family. Example: I am looking forinformation on Sarah
Mariah Hunts family (1844-1906), wife of Andrew Jackson Charles (1832-1917)
living in the Finger Lakes Area of New York State.
As new members join, please try at least once a month to repost a brief
genealogy tree (as above) and also your brick wall request. We never know
who that new member might be able to help. Since there are a number of
members of this list already, I would like to see if we could not do a brief
posting here in the next few days, that would let everyone know who your
ancestors are(within the limits described above) and what you are looking
for.

Hi List,
As a new subscriber I would like to give details of the Charles family I am
searching for.
After c1845 my Charles family have been in Nottingham , England.
Before 1850 they are from Wymeswold and Willoughby on the Wolds,
Leicestershire, England.
I do know that a Thomas and Sarah went to Australia in the 1850s and that
two other brothers went to the USA.
Thomas was the son of John Charles and Martha Foreman who married in 1800.
John was a brother of my GGGGrandfather Edward who in turn was the son of
Edward Charles and Hannah Hulse who married in Willoughby on the Wolds in
1775.
I have more info to exchange with anyone who thinks we may have a match.
Ian Charles.
