L. W. CHARLEBOIS EXPIRES, AGED 65
DEATH OCCURS AFTER AN EXTENDED ILLNESS
VETERAN BUILDING CONTRACTOR
Funeral Services Will Be Held Wednesday Morning - Mr. Charlebois Came to Watertown in 1901 From Clayton and Since Has Lived Here.
L. William Charlebois, 65, general building contractor, who had erected numerous schools, churches, hospitals and other structures in northern New York during his long career, died at 8:45 Sunday morning at his home on the Burrville road, next to the Cold Creek Inn, after a long illness. He had been confined to his bed for about 8 weeks.
Mr. Charlebois had been in poor health for about two years. He was ill for several months, beginning with the later part of September, 1937, but by the early part of 1938 he had recovered to the extent that he was able to attend to his contracting business again.
Later, he became ill again and last October he went to Montreal, Que., where until early February he was under treatment. He was brought back home Feb. 7 and for the past five weeks he had been critically ill at his home.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 9:30 from the family home and at 10 in the Holy Family church, where a solemn requiem high mass will be celebrated. Burial will be made in Glenwood cemetery.
Surviving Mr. Charlebois, besides his wife, Mrs. Bertha M. Riley Charlebois, are six children, Mrs. Anthony (Lucile A.) Tauroney, Mrs. Leo (Blanche B.) McGraw, Gerald A. Charlebois, Mrs. Harry J. (Harriet L.) Boulter and Harold L. Charlebois, City, the later two being twins, and Mrs. Francis J. (Elizabeth G.) Donohue, Clayton; 15 grandchildren and one brother, Eli Charlebois, Clayton.
Lewis William Charlebois was born on grindstone Island, Oct.16, 1873, one of 13 children of the late Eli and Elizabeth Bertrand Charlebois.
His father, a native of Canada, came to this country in his youth and for years was a chef on the Great Lakes and also on the private yacht of H. H. Warner. Later, he became a farmer. He died Sept. 25, 1910. His wife, Elizabeth Bertrand, who was a native of Cape Vincent, died Jan. 7, 1911.
Mr. Charlebois spent the early part of his life on Grindstone Island and Clayton, receiving his education in public schools of those places. At the age of 16 he learned the trade of a carpenter from the Charlebois Brothers, cousins, who were prominent building contractors in Watertown.
In his youth he worked as a carpenter in the Thousand Islands region, where he was employed on various summer estates and resort hotels.
Mr. Charlebois married Miss Bertha M. Riley, daughter of Thomas E. and Harriet McCombs Riley of Clayton, on Oct. 30, 1895. The ceremony was performed in St. Mary's Catholic church at Clayton by the present vicar general of the Ogdensburg diocese, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Phileas S. Garand, Ogdensburg, who was then pastor of the Clayton church.
After a few years' residence in Clayton, the family came to Watertown in April, 1901. For about two years the family lived in Massena, where Mr. Charlebois was foreman for the Gillespie company of New York on the job of constructing the power canal for the Aluminum Company of America.
Mr. Charlebois then returned to Watertown with his family and since then he has been engaged in business as a general building contractor. Specializing in the erection of business property, he took an active part in building activities in northern New York and erected innumerable residences, churches, schools, mercantile and factory buildings, paper mills and other structures.
Schools, churches, hospitals and other structures built by Mr. Charlebois: include the Canton High school, the weather bureau buildings at Canton, the Memorial Health building, Park Place, city; Mexico academy at Mexico; the fireman's training tower on East Main street; the Sackets Harbor school; various service stations of the Standard Oil company of New York; Smith & Percy building; Bethany Methodist Episcopal church; the House of the Good Samaritan and the Jefferson county sanatorium.
He had a contract for the excavating work done for the new recreation center of the General Electric company on Carleton Island in the St. Lawrence river, near Cape Vincent, in 1930.
Mr. Charlebois also had the contract the same year for the erection of the new ice manufacturing plant on Martin street, near Ann street, for the Watertown Ice company. In 1934 his firm erected the friendly counter system in the Northern New York Trust company building.
Paper mills and other industrial plants constructed or remodeled by the Charlebois concern include the following: the Brownville Paper company and the Harmon Paper company, Brownville; Hinde & Dauch Paper company, and the Continental Paper Bag company, city; Carthage Pulp & Board company; Moyer & Pratt Paper company, Lyonsdale; Newton Falls Paper company; Watertown Daily Times company and the Shaughnessy company.
The company has also made extensive repairs and alterations to the Black River Valley club, the Woodruff hotel and the Paddock Arcade and had contracts for the erection of many large department stores and many modern store fronts, including that of Frank & Empsall & Company.
In June, 1919, Mr. Charlebois acquired ownership of the Fraser garage in Clayton, then the largest establishment of its kind in the village, and after operating it for about two years he sold it to the late Charles A. Plumpion, automobile dealer.
Mr. Charlebois owned a summer resort which he had developed on the St. Lawrence river, about five and a half miles from Clayton, toward Cape Vincent. He purchased 150 acres of the resort property on the river front in July, 1931, for $20,000. The property, which belonged to the J. J. Woodward estate of New York, is located between Clayton and Sand Bay. The development was started in October, 1931, and completed the following January. The resort was named Shady Shores. Last Sept. 22 fire swept through the resort, causing more than $35,000 of property damage. Among the property destroyed was Mr. Charlebois' combined summer home and boat house.
Mr. Charlebois was a trustee of the House of the Good Samaritan, having been elected a member of the hospital board in January, 1934, to fill a vacancy. He was also a member of the Holy Family church and a member and former director of the chamber of commerce. He had served on various chamber of commerce committees.
Until a few years ago when he resigned he was a member of the Black River Valley club. He was also a former member of Watertown lodge, No. 496, B. P. O. E. and the Kiwanis club.
Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Charlebois. One, Grace R., is dead.
For years the Charlebois family resided at 841 Mill street. Later the family resided at 1164 State street where the office of Mr. Charlebois' business in now located in the rear. In November 1936, the family moved into the former Brady home on the Burrville road.
