B. CHARLEBOISE ACCIDENTLY SHOT
Received Injuries Which Will Probably Result Fatally.
B. Charlebois, one of the best known and most highly respected and beloved citizens of the east side, near Afton, was accidentally shot this Monday afternoon shortly after 2 o’clock, and will probably die from the effects of the wound.
Mr. Charlebois had just finished cleaning his gun, loaded it and inadvertently left both barrels cocked, placed it in its accustomed place in the corner; as he turned to go away the gun slipped, fell to the floor and both barrels, loaded with a full charge of number 6 duck shot, exploded and sent the leaden missiles crashing into the unfortunate man’s left side. His wife hearing the report rushed to the room and found her husband lying on the floor in a pool of blood. The discharge had taken effect in the left side. Assistance was at once summoned and Drs. Gatliff of Butte City, and Francis of Princeton sent for and are doing all that is possible for the wounded man. There is but little hope for his recovery. He has made his will and telegraphed to his adopted daughter, Mrs. H. C. Capito and husband at Rocklin. He has no children.

INJURED MAN STILL ALIVE
B. Charlebois, who was so seriously injured at his home near Afton Monday afternoon by the accidental discharge of his gun, the charge from both barrels taking effect in his left side, was still alive this morning, but the attending physicians say there is but one chance in a thousand for his recovery.
A professional nurse has been sent for from St. Mary’s Hospital and every care and attention possible will be given him.

GUNSHOT WOUND CAUSES DEATH
Bastile Charleboise, who was accidentally shot at his home near Afton Monday, died Tuesday afternoon about 3:30 o’clock from the effects of the wound. Coroner Jos. Reidy, of Willows, was called and held an inquest, the verdict of the jury being that death caused by the accidental discharge of gun the deceased had just been handling.
Bastile Charlebois was a native of Canada, aged 55 years, and leaves a devoted wife and an adopted daughter, Mrs. H. C. Capito besides a host of friends to mourn his untimely demise.
He had lived in the vicinity where he died for the past twenty years and no man had a larger circle of true friends than he. There is an old saying that “an honest man is the noblest work of God.” And the deceased lived scrupulously up to that saying, he was an honest man in every sense that word implies.
He had been the Afton postmaster for years and had, in connection with his farming interests conducted a blacksmith shop and was one of the most prosperous citizens in that section of Glenn county. Mr. Charleboise had gone to the shop to clean his shot gun while his wife was getting the noon meal. Dinner ready she waited a few minutes and went to the shop to call him and found him lying on the shop floor writhing in pain in a pool of blood, he was conscious and told her what had happened. The distracted wife hurried to the house and telephoned to several neighbors and for a physician. Luman Davis was the first to arrive. The news traveled rapidly and soon the house was full of friends all anxious to do anything possible for their wounded friend.
The deceased stated that he had cleaned the gun and was setting it down and that it probably hit the floor harder than he intended, the hammers were easily snapped and the sudden jar on the floor caused them both to fall exploding the gun, the charge tearing a great hole through his left side and going out through the roof of the building.
The remains will be taken to San Francisco where interment will be had in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Saturday morning.

E. G. CHARLEBOIS DIES OF INJURIES
FELL FROM PORCH WHILE REPAIRING IT
ONCE BUILDING CONTRACTOR
Partly Regained Consciousness Saturday But Remained in Semi-Coma Until His Death—Funeral Services to Be Held Tuesday
Edwin G. Charlebois, 77, of 703 Washington street, former building contractor and later head of a chain of eight local grocery stores, died at 11:45 Saturday evening in the Mercy hospital of injuries received when he fell about 6:30 Friday night on the porch of the property he owned at 338 Arsenal street, at the corner of North Orcard street.
Mr. Charlebois, senior member of the old contracting firm of Charlebois Brothers, once a leading concern here, was repairing the porch with the aid of his wife’s brother-in-law, Clarence B. Todd, 108 Flower avenue west, when he fell.
A roof had been assembled on the ground and the two men were placing it on the small rear porch. Mr. Charlebois climbed the ladder onto the frame-work of the porch roof and with Mr. Todd was trying to raise it to the top of the frame-work.
Evidently, he lost his balance and fell backward to the wooden porch floor nine feet below, striking on his head. Unconscious, he was removed by ambulance to the hospital, where examination showed he suffered a severe concussion of the brain, but no fractures. His condition was pronounced as serious.
Mr. Charlebois partially regained consciousness Saturday morning, but he remained in a semi-coma until his death.
His wife and his son, Assistant Corporation Counsel Theodore W. Charlebois, 705 Washington street left him at the hospital Saturday night believing that his condition was progressing favorably. About a half hour after they arrived home, the hospital officials notified them that Mr. Charlebois condition was worse. They immediately left for the hospital again, but Mr. Charlebois was dead before they arrived there.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 9 from the family home and at 9:30 in Holy Family church. Burial will be made in Brookside cemetery.
Six young men, close friends of the Charlebois family, have been selected to act as bearers at the funeral. They are: George C. Whiteford, Schuyler Adams, and Attorneys J. Lawrence Conboy, Norman F. Ward and Fred J. Pendergast and Corporation Counsel Lawrence R. Conboy.
Surviving Mr. Charlebois, besides his wife, Mrs. Pearl Louise Walker Charlebois, and his son, are two brothers and two sisters, John P. Charlebois, Augustus A. Charlebois, Mrs. Thomas H. (Agatha) Lynch, city, and Mrs. Sophia C. Fitzgerald, Rochester.
Mr. Charlebois was born in the town of Clayton, April 11, 1863, one of 15 children of the late Joseph and Helen Bertrand Charlebois, and came of French ancestry. His father was a native of Canada. His mother was born at Cape Vincent.
Among his brothers and sisters were: Miss Angelic B. Charlebois, the photographer, who died here Dec. 27, 1937, at the age of 62; Wellington L. Charlebois, who died at the age of 77 in June, 1934, at his farm at New Haven, N.Y.; Joseph M. Charlebois, Norwood coal and feed merchant, who died in Norwood in July, 1920, at the age of 55; Albert O. Charlebois, building contractor, who died here in April, 1922, at the age of 53, and Mrs. Lewis W. (Harriet C.) Dulmage, who died at East Hounsfield Dec. 17, 1936, at the age of 69.
The father, the late Joseph Charlebois, was a master mechanic and shipbuilder. He died April 8, 1905, and the following Aug. 10 his wife also died. Both died in this city.
Mr. Charlebois entered the contracting business in early life, starting to work at Clayton for Darius Butts, general contractor. In 1890 he came to Watertown and engaged in business for himself. The house at 431 Cross street was the first structure he built.
Early in the spring of 1891 he and two of his brothers, Augustus A. and Albert O. Charlebois, formed the general contracting firm of Charlebois Brothers, at the same time establishing a lumber and building supply business.
The firm was one of the most active in this section, having built the Olympic theater, the Arsenal street school, the Charlebois building at 95 Public Square, now known as the Lincoln building, the Brownville-Glen Park High school, various other large structures and numerous homes.
The Charlebois building, now the Lincoln building, a six-story structure, was built about 1908 and became one of the leading business blocks of the city. Its owners, E. G. Charlebois and the A. O. Charlebois estate, sold it in 1926 for more than $200,000.
One of the firm’s most important accomplishments was its work at Pine Camp under contract with the federal government in 1908. Completing the work in 17 days, five days before completion date called for in the contract, Charlebois Brother built 137 kitchens, 137 mess shelters, 8,800 lineal feet of seats and tables, 108 incinerators and all the bathhouses on the army reservation. The extensive project required 150,000 bricks and nearly a million feet of lumber.
The firm also built many of the homes in Deferiet for the St.Regis Paper Company.
Charlebois Brothers had their own extensive warehouse in Factory street. In the fall of 1900 they acquired an old tannery and water power rights at 9 to 11 Fairbanks street.
In connection with its contracting business, the firm established a sash, door and blind factory on Fairbanks street and a paint and hardware store.
The firm of Charlebois Brothers continued for 28 years, dissolving in 1919. E. G. Charlebois retired from the contracting business at that time, entering into the retail grocery business and began to develop a chain of stores. The first store was opened in the basement of the Charlebois building on Public Square.
The chain gradually expanded until there were eight in all. Besides the Charlebois block store, there were stores at 316 Court street, 344 Arsenal street, 335 Clay street, 446 Mill street, 208 Factory street, 451 Arsenal street and 1305 State street.
The chain, known as the one-Way Stores, was owned and operated by Mr. Charlebois until he sold the entire group to the Community Stores Company, Inc., of Syracuse in September, 1929. The business included two bakeries and a fleet of five delivery and two freight trucks.
Since disposing of his grocery store chain, Mr. Charlebois had been retired from business, devoting time to looking after his real estate holdings. Among the property he owned was the former E. W. Sayles home at 709 Washington street, purchased from Mr. Sayles in 1920.
Mr. Charlebois was a member of the Holy Family church and a former member of the Watertown Rotary club and Watertown Council, No. 259, Knights of Columbus. He formerly was a charter member of the latter organization.
Mrs. Charlebois is the former Miss Pearl Louise Walker of this city, native of Lorraine. The couple was married in St. Patrick’s church here Feb. 21, 1905.
