FORMER ST. JOSEPH'S STUDENT ENGAGED
Oxnard friends of Miss Florence Charlebois of Ventura, a former student in St. Joseph's institute will be interested in the following account of the announcement of her engagement from the Ventura Post on Sunday:
Announcement of the engagement of Florence Charlebois, the popular and charming youngest daughter of Mrs. Paul Charlebois, to Robert Knight Porter of Jerome, Arizona, was the delightful surprise awaiting those asked to a sewing party given yesterday afternoon by Mrs. Charlebois and Mrs. Joseph Welch. Mr. Porter, who is a Sigma Chi and a Phi Beta Kappa, is cashier of the Bank of Jerome, and the home where the newly married couple will live is now being built in that city. It is with deep regret that Miss Charlebois' many friends contemplate her leaving Ventura permanently, for she will be greatly missed here. The wedding will take place in the late summer.
Decorations were in pink, and from each chair around the prettily appointed table floated a pink balloon. A large pink bell was suspended from the electrolier over the table and from this pink ribbons ran to each plate. When the guests pulled the ribbons the bell swayed and gave away its secret in the form of shower of little envelopes, with the charming news therein. The place of honor in the center of the table was held by a big heart-shaped cake, which Miss Charlebois cut, and almost all the detail was suggestive of the approaching wedding.
Those invited on the happy occasion were Mrs. John Arneill of Camarilla, Mrs. George Baker of San Francisco, Mrs. F. W. Baker, Mrs. Ralph Cerf of Los Angeles, Mrs. F. W. Hunter, Mrs. Hal Hammons, Mrs. Walter Hoffman Jr., Mrs. W. J. Lewis, Mrs. Ed Newby, Mrs. Frances Seeley, Miss Effie Bartlett, Miss May Duval, Miss Minnie Daly, Miss Nettie Daly, Miss Mildred Foster, Miss Dus Hare, Miss Lulu Lewis of Camarillo, Miss Corinne McGonigle, Miss Anita Sudden, Miss Joyce Waud, Miss Vesta Wagner, Miss Leslie Wilde, Miss Mona Hammons.

Former Sheriff Shoots Eagle
IS ARRESTED FOR MISDOMEANOR AND FINED
Ex-Sheriff Paul Charlebois Kills Endangered Bird While Duck Hunting.
Former Sheriff Paul Charlebois was placed under arrest for misdemeanor, according to information which reached this city yesterday. That a man who had served some time as a sheriff should violate a law seems peculiar, but it nevertheless happened, although the charge is a peculiar one.
It appears that while out duck hunting he killed an eagle, which is a misdemeanor. The information reached County Game Warden Kuhlman, who caused a complaint to be issued and Mr. Charlebois was placed under arrest.
For some years the killing of “the American bird of freedom” has been a misdemeanor offense and when the popular former sheriff put a bullet through the bird he committed a punishable offense.
While out duck shooting a few days ago he noticed a huge eagle swooping down on some ducks. He shot several times with no particular intent at killing the eagle, but the monster bird came tumbling to the earth nevertheless. The large bird measured seven feet from tip to tip.
He was taken before Justice Ortega and stated that he had shot the bird and was given a rather light fine.
