FRANK PAQUIN, 59, HIT BY AUTO; DIES
SKULL WAS FRACTURED IN ACCIDENT
ROBERT CURTIS, 18, WAS DRIVER OF CAR
Frank Paquin, 59, Proprietor of the Paquin hotel, 1213 Ludington street died at 10 o'clock last night as the result of injuries sustained when he was struck and knocked down by an automobile driven by Robert Curtis, 18 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Curtis, 429 South 8th street, at the intersection of Ludington and 12th streets at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
Mr. Paquin suffered a fractured skull and two broken veterbrae as the result of being thrown to the pavement and internal injuries from being struck by the car. He did not regain consciousness up to the time of his death.
Accident "Unavoidable"
According to the story told by young Curtis and substantiated by his three companions and eye witnesses, the accident was unavoidable. He was driving west on Ludington street up to 12th street where he made a turn to start east again. Due to the fact that a heavy truck was passing just as he came upon the street car tracks, he says that he was forced to stop momentarily at this point. The truck having passed, he started forward again and just as he was making the turn, he asserts that Mr. Paquin left the sidewalk and began to cross over to the northeast corner of the street, apparently for the purpose of mailing a letter, which was found in his hand when he was picked up.
Did Not See Man
It is declared by witnesses of the accident that Mr. Paquin held up his hands at this point in an attempt to warn the youth to stop. Curtis, however insists that he did not see the man at all until he was upon him and that he applied his brakes immediately. The momentaum of the car, however, was too great and the automobile struck Mr. Paquin, knocking him down onto the pavement. The body was not dragged.
The injured man was taken to St. Francis hospital for treatment where X-ray revealed the serious nature of his injuries.
With Curtis in the Automobile were three Escanaba high school students: John Hughes, 17, grandson of John Hughes of Flat Rock, and making his home with Mr. and Mrs. Guy Sullivan, 620 South 10th street; Mary Hughes, a sister of John Hughes and Thelma Erickson, Lake Shore Drive. Robert Curtis is a senior at the Escanaba high school.
Investigate Today
An investigation of the accident will probably be made this morning by Coroner Bartley. Several eye witnesses have been notified by the police to appear this morning and give their versions of the story. It is not believed that any charge will be pressed against the youth.
Paquin Old Resident
Frank Paquin was born, 59 years ago, at Grand Mere, Quebec, Canada, and came to Escanaba forty years ago, being employed as a brakeman on the Chicago and North-Western for the first 13 years, later becoming proprietor of the Paquin hotel which he has managed for about twenty years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and one daughter, Eugene, Lawrence and Roland, all of this city, and Verniece, who is at present attending Milwaukee Normal, and three brothers residing in Canada. Miss Verniece is expected to arrive in this city tonight.
The deceased was a member of three local lodges, the Catholic Order of Foresters, Canadeaux and Institut Jacques Cartier.
The body was taken to the Allo Funeral Home to be prepared for burial but no arrangements have as yet been completed.

FRANK PAQUIN INQUEST HELD
Robert Curtis Absolved Of All Blame In Fatal Crash
Frank Paquin, 59, proprietor of the Paquin hotel, came to his death "by falling to the pavement causing a fracture of the skull, due to the unavoidable meeting with a Ford sedan at the corner of Ludington and 12th streets, Escanaba, Michigan, on Oct. 20, 1925." a coroner's jury decided yesterday morning.
So completely was Robert Curtis, 18, driver of the car, absolved from any blame or suspicion of recklessness, that the jury did not include his name in the formal verdict.
Was Driving Slowly
Testimony at the inquest was emphatically conclusive in placing the speed of the automobile at about 4 miles an hour; and in fixing the point of the collision in the street car tracks ten feet outside the pedestrian lane. Mr. Paquin, it was testified, was "jaywalking" across the intersection, presumably to mail a letter in a mail box. Those in the car first saw him when he was directly in front of the machine. He had stepped into their view from behind the other vehicles. He turned quickly facing the car and shouted "Stop!" The brakes were applied, and Mr. Paquin's hands came down to rest for a moment on the radiator. Then he toppled backwards.
Car Barely Reached Him
The car scarcely reached him. His feet were under the front axle as he lay on the pavement, the wheels of the machine resting almost in the spot where he stood a momunt before. One quick step to the rear would probably have saved his life.
Members of the coroner's jury were W. J. Clark, E. F. Sullivan, Ben F. Young, E. M. Williams, V. J. Fillion and A. Clement, Jr.
