Toni,
Thank you for the prompt reply. Not being familiar with the geography in Canada, what exactly was/is the "Sillary"? Another problem is, the family came over from France settling in Montreal and within a timeframe of approx. 200 yrs. migrated downriver to Quebec City (Isle de Orleans) where they purchased/were given a slice of land (I've stood on it) on the Isle. If they had been given the land in appreciation for work done for the Monks that they came over with, wouldn't that land have been given to them in Montreal? I hope you don't mind me questioning you on that point. Please give me your opinion on this. Thank You.
Joe Sharland

With "dit Francoeur" being the nickname... Good heart... it could be connected to the fact that Claude was living at Sillery working for the monks building the first hospital in Canada.... His parcel of land was along the St. Lawrence river.
It is believed that he came over with the monks and received the land as compensation for his work....
We have family members that have signed both Charland and Sharland....

Sharyn,
I read with interest your latest post to the Charland message board. I've been attempting to dig up the origins of the "dit Francoeur" behind the Sharland/Charland name. Nobody has been able to answer that question and I am wondering if that would have, for some reason, kept us from digging deeper into the Sharland/Charland name going back from Montreal, Que. to France. Do you have any background on this, I call, nickname? Thank you.
Joe Sharland
