Be careful not to get carried away with your enthusiasm. The millions of descendants of Charlemagne have been very well documented and can be found on many websites. Many French-Canadians descend through Marie Catherine BAILLON and Jacques MIVILLE dit DESCHENES. I have not so far seen any connection of the CHARLAND surname to the Charlemagne lineage.
The CHARLAND surname in North America has been well documented since the birth of Jean CHARLAND dit FRANCOEUR in Fance in abt. 1595. His son, Claude emigrated and married Jacquette Jacqueline DESBORDES on Jan 8 1652 and Jeanne PELLETIER on 12 Sept 1661 at Quebec. (Another immigrant, Catherine CHARLAND, was b. abt 1618 and was female progenitor of the LATOUR line.) There were 3 children by the first wife and 10 by the second. When you complete your research you will probably end up with one of the male offspring of this line.
The most important thing you can do is continue to work backwards from the known facts. Have you located the dates and places of the birth, marriage, and death of your Ernest CHARLAND? Perhaps if you post this information we can help.
My CHARLAND connection is through Marie Anne CHARLAND dit FRANCOEUR (1666-1712) who married Jacques GENDRON in 1686. The CHARLAND dit FRANCOEUR surname is very common on Ile d'Orleans, Montmorency, QC, CAN and you will probably find your roots there at some point.
Regards,
Sharyn

My name is Justin Charland son of Micheal Charland son of Roland Charland son of Ernest Charland...and from there I have drawn a blank...until now. I am in SLC UT and looking in the family history archives.
My search so far yeilded that My Grandfather's name is a clue. There is a poem called the Song of Roland that gives details of Charlemagne's conquests. Besides that I found a surname supplement in the UNLV library that states that Charland is drivative of Charlemagne. I'm not so full of myself as to believe that I am decended from royalty, and I think I might have the correlation.
Charlemagne's Grandfather Charles Martel used a social convention of bestowing his last name to those who fought bravely in battle. It is quite possible that Charlemagne did the same thing, hence Charland is either a shortened version of Charlemagne or it is literally "of CHARlemagne's LAND". Both conclusions makes sense to me.
I currently reside in SLC, UT and have ample time to investigate this matter. This is my first day at the family history research center here, which is provided by the Mormon's from what I understand. I haven't even left the first floor computer center. My next step is to go to the Canadian collection and the French collection.
As a side note, I am the last of my lineage. My father had a son in a previous marriage and I met him once when I was 4yrs old. He has a different last name as do all my cousins. My father has a brother Robert and a sister Kay. I also have a sister, but she regretably had surgery that left her barren. Once again last Charland---->HERE<----. I recieve many complements on the beautiful last name and in the west it is outstanding. I have never met anyone with my last name other than my immediate family, not even when I was in the military and saw countless (300, 000) name tags.
Which brings me to another point...my father was in the military (Marines, Army, Navy) my Grandfather was an MP during WWII in the Army and stood guard during the the latter Nuremburg Trials (this point is still being debated b/c my GF was a big BS'er). I've also been to the Vietnam Memorial Wall and found a Springfield, MA Charland.
Other than that from what I remember from what my Grandfather telling me was that his father owned 2 bars until someone played a joke on him calling him and saying "the bar is on fire! Quick!" or something like that. Then he got in to an accident and had to sell to settle.
So, my Grandfather told me that I wouldn't like the "back east family" he said "they are completely different" and they "wouldn't understand me and I wouldn't understand them". I hope to prove him wrong. I also hear there are millions of Charland's back east and I'd love to meet some. I could go on and on about the different perspectives you get when traveling and meeting other people, etc, but I will end with this...
Only if we act together with concerted effort will people gain immortality. Contained within society is infinity. As of now, we are too disjointed, selfish, and barberic to fully understand how to live harmonously until the end of time.
Sincerely,
Justin T. Charland email: jtcjtc1(a)hotmail.com

I am one of Joe's Sharland cousins whom he met a couple of years ago. My father, Raymond Earl Sharland, was born in Malone, NY - his father's name was George - but, as Joe said, our branch has spelled the last name with an "S" for a few generations now.
