Saranac Lake — Frederick J. Charland, 75, of 2 State St. in Saranac Lake, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
Born April 24, 1925, in Saranac Lake, he was a son of Loris (Nucky) and Pansy Mae (Brown) Charland.
Mr. Charland was a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy. Following the war, he was employed by Brownlite-Chapin Corp. and Carrier Corp. in Syracuse. Then he was employed by the Harold Journal as a printer from 1955 until 1963, when he moved to Saranac Lake. He was employed as a printer with the Adirondack Daily Enterprise from 1963, until he retired in 1992.
He was a member of the Fish and Game Club, where he was keeper of the books. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was also a member of the Tuesday Night Mens Bowling League.
He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Wojciak, whom he married on Oct. 5, 1946, in St. Bernard’s Rectory; five daughters, Mrs. Peter (Bonnie) Stockton of Ilion, Mrs. Fred (Christine) LaMere of Tupper Lake, Mrs. Gerard (Michele) Williams of Paul Smiths, Mrs. Barry (Deirdre) Badore of Saranac Lake and Mrs. Alex (Heather) Sinos of Patra, Greece; two sons, Michael and his wife Diane Charland of Saranac Lake and Barton and his wife Dianne Charland of Saranac; one sister, Mrs. Helen Soucia of Tully; two brothers, Charles Charland of Clay and Richard Charland of North Syracuse; 17 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchlidren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Lyle Charland and Loris Charland Jr.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Bible vigil will be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday at 11:15 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Church with Father Joseph Wheelok officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Tupper Lake.
Friends wishing to remember Mr. Charland may make contributions to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad or High Peaks Hospice in care of the funeral home.
