Thanks for replying. It has long been family lore that our name was changed from Charland to Charleau. We were following the Sharland connection because it was the only "John" that we could find in the 1901 census. The dates were about right (b 1882) but the trail runs cold.

Hi. Charleau is a pretty unique name. As I understand our family history we started out as Charland (possibly Sharland). What documents or evidence have you got refering to "Charleau". Thanks

Once you get back to first arriving settlers in Quebec you will usually be at the end of your search. There are no shipping lists for that era. There are not many family lines that can be traced back to France beyond one generation. In this case that generation is Jean Charland dit Francoeur (b. c. 1595) and Catherine Mabile (or Mavile) who were from Chambon, Rochefort, Saintonge, Charente Maritime, France. Perhaps research in that area of Frrance may turn up a clue, but I would not count on it.
Regards,
Sharyn
