Founded in 1661, Ste-Famille is oldest parish on the island. (Claude Charland....helped build the original church) The present church was erected in 1744 and was finished in 1749
From the book Isle of Orleans by Pierre Georges Roy...."All churches are blessed but very few are consecrated. To consecrate a church is to distinguish it from an ordinary one, to make it holy, that is to say, to set it apart solely for the service of God."
This church was consecrated by Monseigneur de Pontbriand, in September 1749....one of eight in the Province of Quebec. The inscription is on the front of the church.
5 Daughters and 3 sons of Jeanne and Claude are listed in the Quebec Archives as being baptised at Ste-Famille.
*** While talking to the rector of the parish he informed me the original church stood near a hundred feet from the present site.....and as they did not use headstones in the earlier times a burial site could not be found for Claude.*******

On Thursday, 22 January 1705, Claude Charland, 87, was buried in the cemetery of Sainte-Famille. The pastor Francois Lamy presided at his funeral cermony in the presence of Jacques Letourneau, Gervais Foucher and Dominique Bonneau. As for Jeanne Pelletier, we know that she had been hospitalized at the Hotel-Dieu of Quebec in February 1698. Still living on 2 December 1702, it is certain that she was no longer alive on 10 October 1708, the wedding day of Gabriel, the heir.
Claude, Jacqueline and Jeanne, opened a path to an entire line of descendants now spread through out Canada and the United States, Leaf through the registries of Sainte-Anne du Petit-Cap, the name of Claude, Charland appears as a donor to the church begun in 1662....."From Francoeur twenty sols."
Family name variations....Chalan, Charlan, Francoeur, Francouer, and Sharlow.
**** My husband and I have been to Sainte-Famille.....and walked on the land owned by Jeanne and Claude...We have been to the new church (as the mortar gave way on the original.)......and walked through the cemetary....The church regestry has a scale of the island with the family land parcels of the original families...... including Claude and Jeanne....
The island is truly beautiful...with apple orchards galore.... The fruit from the island is sold all over Quebec..... There is an observation tower on the island from which you can see the way the land was devided along the water and the main road..... From the island you can see Montmorency Falls.......and watch ocean liners passing by on their way down the St Lawrence to the Great Lakes.....
My husbands family decend from Gabriel and still live in the Province of Quebec ....we are searching for family that moved to New Hampshire and Vermont....but that will be another post......

In the summer of 1661 Jeanne Pelletier arrived at Quebec. Originally from Saint-Nicolas-des-Champs, a Parisian, the daughter of the late Simon Pelletier, cartwright, and of Marie Large. Jeanne was abut 20 years old. On Monday, 12 September 1661, the pastor Henri di Bernieres blessed their union, Witnesses were Augustin Descartes, Lieutenant to the governor d'Avaugour; Charles Legardeur, Sieur de Tily, Seigneur of the fief of Saint-Michel near Sillery, and Denis-Joseph Ruette, Sieur d'Auteuil. Claude and Jeanne went to live in Sillery. On September 24 1662 Claude sold his concession at Fort St-Francois-Xavier to Pierre Pluchon.
The Church census (Sainte-Famille) of 26 April 1661 show that Charland was considered to be a landowner on the Ile de'Orleans. Father Charles de Lauzon, Sieur de Charny, ceded to Claude Charland, on March 1665, a stretch of 2 arpents of frontal land, on the north side, in the seigneurie of Lirec, parish of Sainte-Famille, bordering Joseph-Elie Gauthier and Mathurin Gerbert (Jalbert). This property was located a few arpent to the west of the church. The present survey number is 186.
In the census of 1667, the Charlands stated that they owned 6 arpents of land under cultivation. Six children enlivened their home, including Noel, 14, and Denis 10, children from the first marriage. Neighbors were Jacques Jean and Mathurin Gerbert.
In 1681, Claude Charland 60, and his wife Jeanne Pelletier, 44, supported a family of 11 children: they owned 1 gun, 7 head of cattle and had 30 arpents of land under cultivation. In 1689 according to the map of Villeneuve, they owned a lime kiln.
Second family:
From 1663 to 1679, the Charlands increased their human wealth by 10: Jean, Anne, Marie-Anne, Michelle, Marie, Gabriel, Claude, Joseph, Louise and Genevieve, six daughters and four sons, baptized at Sainte-Famille, with the exception of the first two.
1. Claude Charland, godson of Claude Guyon on 30 November 1672, disappeared after the census of 1681.
2. Louise Charland, godmothered by Louise Guyon on 29 October 1676, remained unmarried. However, she had a natural daughter, Marie-Louise, on 3 March 1701. The child died at the age of two. At the Sovereign Council on 21 November 1701, ancestor Charland "insisted saying the Andre Gauthier Would be Held to give food provisions to the Amount of forty Livres to Louise Charland alleged mother in Fact of the said plaintiff".
Louise was buried at Sainte-Famille on 25 November 1718.
3. Jeanne Pelletier"s first born., Jean, godson of Jean Premont on 26 January 1663 at Chateau-Richer, married Anne Pare on 30 October 1691. All the Charland marriages took place at Sainte-Famille, with the exception of Joseph's. One day, Jean went to live in Montreal where he found work as a cooper. He died at the Hotel-Dieu of Ville-Marie on 8 October 1731. Family of 12 children.
4. Anne Charland, also baptized at Chateau-Richer, on 2 June 1664, joined her life to Rene Bauche di Sanssoucy. At her burial at Quebec on the first of February 1694, she was the mother of six children.
5. Marie-Anne took Jacques Gendron as her husband on 28 November 1686. Mother of 11 children.
6. Michelle Charland was the god-daughter of Michelle Le Flot on 29 June 1667. She married Pierre Paris on the 24 of January 1691 and was the mother of five children. She died in her native parish on 16 December 1708.
7. Marie Charland, godfathered by Paul Vachon, on 30 March 1669, took as her husband Pierre Paquet, shoemaker, on 29 July 1694. Five children.
8. On 11 January 1671, Gabriel Thivierge held Gabriel Charland at the baptismal font. The latter was married first to the widow Angelique Tetu, on 10 October 1708, and in a second marriage in 1715 to Marguerite Drouin. Family of 12. Heir to the paternal property. Gabriel owned a house, barn, stable, 60 arpents of plowable land and 4 in meadow in 1725.
9. Joseph Charland, born on 11 March 1675, was the only one to take a wife at Quebec in the person of Marie-Angelique Arbour, who gave him eight children. In 1716, the couple lived on rue Saint-Louis in Quebec. Joseph died at the Hotel-Dieu on 28 September 1725.
10. The youngest, Genevieve Charland, joined her life to Louis Bluteau did L'Arabelle, a shoemaker, on 2 December 1702. The couple lived at Quebec, on rue DeMeules, in 1716, with their five children. Genevieve died at the age of 39 at the Hotel-Dieu of Quebec, on 17 July 1718.

Claude Charland dit Francoeur, was originally from the city of Chateauroux, today the principal city in the department of I'Indre, in the former French province of Berry. Claude wouuld have been baptized about 1626, in the church of Saint-Christophe dependent on the religious authority of Bourges. According to our Canadian documents, ancestor Charland's father and mother were Jean, and Cathrine Maville.
Marcel Trudel noted the presence in Silery Canada of Claude Charland as a witness to a sale carried out on December 5, 1646. (notary republic statement)
On Jan. 8 1652, Claude celebrated his marriage to Jacqueline Borde or Desbordes, at Ouebec (city). Jacqueline was the daughter of Dimanche Borde and Radegonde Valentin, and was originally from Rueil, today Rueil-Malmaison, arrondissement of the center of Paris and Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Father Jean Dequen was the priest who carried out the service. On Jan. 23, 1652 Claude dit Francoeur recieved the ninth concession of land, near the location of the Fort Saint-Francois-Xavier at Sillery. He recieved from the Jesuits 2 arpents of frontal land on the Saint-Lawrence river by 20 deep. The neighbors were Jean Noel or Nouel and Maurice Arrive. Claude helped in the building of the fort as noted in records recorded by Marcel Trudel and was compensated for land used in the building of the same.
Claude Charland was confirmed at Quebec, by Msgr de Laval on the 24th of Feruary 1660. He was 35 years old. It is believed he left for the safety of Quebec city as he almost fell into the hands of the Indians while working in his fields....as noted by Father J. A. Scott.
Jacqueline Desbordes was buried at Quebec, on Monday 19 April. The registry of Notre-Dame does not give her age.
Three Charland children were born to this union at Silery: Noel-Joseph, an anonymous male and Denise-Hyacinthe.
1. The eldest, Noel Joseph, godson of Noel Pinquet on 27 November 1652, was married on 29 October 1682 at Sainte-Famille on the island, to Marie Turcot who would give him five children.
2. The anonymous boy was conditionally baptized at home by Guillaume Audouart on 18 February 1655 and buried the next day in the presence of Father Jean Dequen.
3. Denise-Hyacinthe, baptized by Father Pierre Bailloquet on the last day of January 1656, he was married at Sainte-Famille twice: first, to Marie-Anne Letourneau, then to Marie Gauthier. Responsible for eleven children, he died on 25 February 1703, perhaps the victim of the epidemic of small pox.

Alice,
Thanks for this tidbit. Mike (Joe's brother) and I had been working together for several years. My Louis and their Zepheranis (Isadore) were brothers.
My question on the Catherine Mabile/Mavile had been that that name also pops up in the Faille/Fayette line. If the Catherine's were one and the same, it would appear that the Fayette and the Charland line were related long before m grandmother and grandfather married.
Would you know if she was married a previous time?
Thanks, again.

While I was active in the VFW Aux. I met someone in Saranac Lake of that line. She promised to send me on the work that had been done on her line but failed to do so.
So, there is something out there--somewhere.

If your line goes to Michigan, I believe you are the descendant of Louis' brother, Zepherinus, and probably of Mike and Joe's line. If so, we are cousins.

Hi,
My grandmother was Rose Charland, who married Delbert Fayette. Her father was Louis Charland who married Celia Jette. Louis' father was Abraham, who married Helene Derome-Descarreaux.
I have traced the line back to the immigrant Claude- and with the help of others have found an error in Tanguay- Jette has the line correct. One of the cousins found the marriage records as proof that the son Joseph was listed with the wrong parents.
I have also researched wives' lines.
Would be more than happy to exchange info.
