Hi Folks, Here is part 2 of the introduction from the Charity book.
Quoted from the book entitled, "The Descendants of James and Keziah
Charity written by Edna Charity Lucas.
QUOTE-: To distance themselves from this situation and to lessen their
connection to their browner cousins, some Charitys at the time changed
their name from Charity to CHITTY, CARSELY OR CARRELL. For example,
Mary Carrell had a son named Thomas Carrell and two others, John and
Peter Charity.
The records do not reflect many activities about the Charitys in the
late 1700's. Apparently the family was law abiding and rather typical
members of the community-doing nothing to bring any significant
attention to themselves. By the close of the 18th centruy, Charitys had
begun to venture outside of Surry County.
James Charity and his wife, keziah, settled in Charles City County
becoming the first Charitys to be listed in that County's census in
1810. This history traces the thousands of descendants of James and
Keziah. James and Keziah were basically a farming family with James
doing some blacksmith work. Together, they had eleven children over the
course of their marriage.
The oldest son was Littleton. Littleton spent most of his young adult
years learning at the home of Virginia Randolph, the nationally-known
black educator who resided in Glen Allen, Virginia. Hemarried Ellen
Scott in 1839.
Walker, the next son, also married in 1839. His wife was Elizabeth
Bradby. Walker along with his younger brothers, William and Micajah,
helped to build fortifications along the Charles City peninsula during
the Civil War.
Archer, the third son, died at a very young age. No information about
him seems to be available.
Micajah, the fourth son, married twice. First to Nancy Bradby and then
to Sarah Goins. From these two unions he fathered sixteen children,
supporting his family by farming and roofing.
Tragedy struck again with the next child. Jordan, the fifth son, was
mentally retarded.
Finally, a daughter, Susan was born in 1828. During her teen years, she
moved to Richmond and worked as a domesic.
The seventh son, Austin, remained in Charles City county for some time
helping his father on the farm. He took his first wife, Effindly Green.
After her death he married Martha White and settled in Henrico County
earning his livelihood as a sheet metal worker.
Robert, born, in 1830, lived in Charles City County all of his life
working as a carpenter and as a farmer. He first married Mary Turner and
later Nancy Jane Bradby. He, too, assisted his older brothers in the
fortifications of the Charles City peninsula during the Civil War.
Elizabeth, the second daughter, was born in 1832. Nothing is known about
Elizabeth's life.
In 1834, Keziah gave birth to another girl Martha Ann. Like her older
sister, Susan, she lived in Richmond and worked as domestic.
The last child, William, was born in 1839. He served as a
non-commissioned officer in the army. At the completion of his service,
he married Harriet Langston.
Charitys across the country must remember our beginnings, through our
foreparents, James and Keziah Chairty. In Charles City, Virginia, in the
early 1800's, they started a family that stretches across the country
today. I think they would be extremely proud of their descendants. We
have diligently climbed the proverbial ladder of success making
accomplishments in many fields. As the Bible says, "And now abideth
faith, hope and charity, and the greatest of these is charity."
May the Charity Family always prevail and prosper.
Edna Charity Lucas,June 1991, Richmond, Virginia"

Hi Everyone, This message will be for those who do not have the Charity
book written by Edna Charity Lucas. I will be quoting from the Preface
and Introduction and am giving FULL credit to Edna Lucas for her
compilation.
PREFACE from the book entitled, The Descendants of James and Keziah
Charity" written by Edna Charity Lucas. (Also please remember there was
no copyright information included in the book, so I do not know if it
was ever formally copyrighted.)
"In 1969, i began the arduous and fulfilling task of identifying my
ancestral heritage. While the many visits to the library and the
hundreds of telephone calls started at that time, the real revision for
the book regarding JAMES and KEZIAH CHARITY (my great, great
grandparents) began when I was very young. My parents, Joseph and Dora
Adkins Charity, would tell my brothers and sisters fascinating stories
about "Charity Town", a section of Charles City County, Virginia where
many of the Charitys' resided.
Old GUILFIELD BAPTIST CHURCH,the second oldest church in the county, was
among some of the edifices built by many of my ancestors.
This book, "The Descendants of James and Keziah Charity", is my tribute
to those who came before me and my legacy to those who will follow.
I would be remiss if I did not thank all of those who assisted and
guided my work. Robert Clay, who helped me understand the intricacies
of the Virginia State Library's computer system; Karen Williams, who
diligently typed this document; and of course, you, my many cousins, who
so willingly gave me the information on their respective families."
EDNA OLIVIA CHARITY LUCAS
(end of quote)
INTRODUCTION Part 1
Quote-"The first evidence of a Charity appears in the rcords of
Lincolnshire, England in 1048. A "TOUSSANT CHARITY" was a resident of
this small, pastoral community. No other information has been found
concerning him, but during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth
centuries, Charity marriages were quite prevalent in Lincolnshire,
England.
It appears that like many in England at that time, Charitys were also
anxious to leave that country to seek prosperity in the New World. One
of the fIRst to come was a Mr. A. Charity. His is the first Chairty name
to be found in records in this country. Serving as a tithable, a person
working to pay his passage, Mr. A Charity stayed at Sunken Marsh
Plantation in Surry County, Virginia.
Many claim that the English first tied their ships to trees at Jamestown
on May 13, 1607, and while history certainly supports most of that
claim, a lesser know fact is that five days before that first major
landing of settlers, a small party landed in Surry County. For this
reason, Surry is often referred to as the "Cradle of the Republic."
Mr. A. Charity was not the only Charity living in Surry County in the
1600's. Either others accompanied him from England or many marriages
quickly occurrred. The records indicate than many Charitys resided
there. Among them, in 1657, was Valentine Charity. Valentine Charity,
like many of her relatives owned land in Surry County, including part of
Chippokes Plantation and the land where Bacon Castle was built in 1665.
The year 1706 is a benchmark year in the history of the Charitys. For it
was in this year that racism was first felt by the family. It appears
that in the late 1600's, Charitys had intermarried, either with the
Native Americans living in the area or with the African slaves that had
been brought to this country in 1609. Regardless of which had occurred,
the white-skinned Charity family of England now included brown-skinned
members, and in 1706, four of the members, Hartwell, Jeffrey, Millie,
and Wilmouth Charity were forced to leave Southport Parish because of
the color of their skin. "

Hi Linda, Thanks for all you have sent lately. I cannot remember if I ever
sent you this with the Charity reference. I believe we may be related to
this man, but it will be a long time before we make the connection. I have
seen a phot of him and he looks a lot like my husband. His widow gives the
same "he was descended from Pocahonatas" story that my husband's family
gives about their LEE ancestors, too. Susan

Fluvanna County was created in 1777 from the eastern portion of Albemarle
County. It was then, as now bounded on the east by Goochland County, on the
north by Louisa County, on the west by Albemarle County and on the South by
Buckingham and Cumberland Counties (The Virginia Genealogist - A Guide to the
Counties of VA. Vo. 10 No. 2 April/June 1966)
Register of Children of Colored Persons in Fluvanna County, State of Virginia,
whose parents ceased to cohabit on 27th February, 1866, which the Father
recognizes to be his.
