Life Crushed Out On Dredge
Load of Bucket Was Too Great For Beam,
Which Crushed Charette's Skull Like An Egg Shell
Home was in Buffalo Where he Leaves Wife and Two Children -
Officer of Company Refused to Give out Information as to the
Accident - Hundreds Crowded Main Street Bridge
Frank Charette, 38 years old, of Fifth street, Toledo, was almost instantly killed on the big dredge engaged in excavating for the Great Lakes Construction Company on the barge canal work just east of the Main street at 1:30 o'clock this afternoon.
Charette's death was caused by the dipper handle breaking as a dipper full of dirt was being raised from the bottom of the canal. The lower part of the broken shaft slid back and struck Charette on the head, crushing his skull like paper. When Drs. F. X. Fiegel and W. V. R. Blighton arrived at the dredge in response to calls they found the man gasping his last. Coroner Jacob E. Helwig was notified, and the body was removed to W. M. Wattengel's undertaking rooms.
Charette is survived by a wife and two daughters. Mrs. Charette has been notified.
When William P. Donnelly, manager of the company, was asked by a reporter for The Evening News the name of the dead man, he declined to give the desired information. He also refused to allow reporters on the dredge.
