This was the closest in spelling on a Rootsweb message board to items i
found yesterday containing the name Denise Chapelay / Denis Chapelet /
Arthur Chapelay etc.
Found were what looks to be small Catholic religious volumes in French, as
well as a "notebook" handwritten in French, hand titled "Innocente Exhenry
de Champery, 1885." i cannot tell if the writings are poetry - or
otherwise. My high school French is failing me.
One book is inscribed "Arthur Chapelay, Champery, 1920-21". One book is
inscribed " Denise Champelay, Champery Valais." One book is inscribed "T.
Champelay, Champery, Mission de 1914." On one of the small cards in one of
the volumes is a photo of Madame Innocente Chapelay-Exhenry. All the
volumes were donated to the Bainbridge Island Public Library, but because of
their condition (slightly moldy smelling), were destined for the dumpster.
i thought i would rescue the books to see if i could find an interested
party to adopt them.
i realize that local family may have donated them, but i can find no local
listings of this name in our area, so perhaps they were found as curiosities
at an antique store. i'm hoping someone in the Rootsweb community will know
something of the Chapelay family, or, if not, someone will be interested
simply because they are French, or relate to the Catholic religion.
