My husband and I both have CHAPPLEs in our family trees, and I'm hoping that someone out there may have some information that will help us to break down our brickwalls!
My husband's CHAPPLE ancestry has been traced back to John CHAPPLE, dates/parentage etc unknown, who married Elizabeth Oldry CAMPION on 17th Nov 1819 at Holy Trinity, Exeter, Devon. John died sometime between 1841 and 1851. I tried very hard to decipher his occupation on both the 1841 census and his daughter Maria's marriage certificate, but in both cases it was unclear - perhaps Carter? Jailer? Tailer? Painter?????
John and Elizabeth had at least four children:
1. Maria Campion CHAPPLE, bap 27th Sep 1820 at St Mary Major, Exeter. She married John KELLOW on 25th Aug 1841 at St Sidwell, Exeter.
2. Emma CHAPPLE, bap 19 Mar 1824, St Peter's Cathedral, Exeter. She married James Manley PRISTON in 1848 at Exeter.
3. Elizabeth Mary Wills CHAPPLE, bap 1st June 1826 at St Mary Major, Exeter.
4. Kitty CHAPPLE, born circa 1833, Exeter (calculated from age given in 1841 census).
My own CHAPPLE ancestry dates back to my 3G Grandmother, Jane CHAPPLE. She was born circa 1800 at (I believe) Stawell, Somerset. She married Charles WRIDE on 8th Dec 1831 at East Brent, Somerset, though they later lived at Wedmore, Somerset. Jane died at Wedmore on 4th Jan 1872.
I'd be really grateful for any clues, hints, information, etc!
Best wishes,
Sue

Dear Sue,
Thank you very, very much for the CHAPPLE information, that is wonderful. I have been trying to find Robert for a long time, in fact about five years; you have given me a whole new line of ancestors, I am most grateful.
Best wishes, Marge Raven

Hi Marge,
I saw that you were searching for Robert CHAPPLE of Stogumber, and think I have probably found him for you.
I note that there was a Robert CHAPPLE born 7th Feb 1812, Stogumber, Somerset, and baptized 1st March 1812, son of John CHAPPELL and Joan WESTERN. John CHAPPELL and Joan WESTERN were married on 14th Nov 1803 at Stogumber.
John CHAPPELL and Joan appear in the 1841 census as follows:
1841 Stogumber
John CHAPEL, 60, Carpenter, Y
Joan CHAPEL, 67?, Y
Jane CHAPEL, 2, Y
(The "Y" signifies that they were born in the County, ie Somerset)
In 1851, John and Joan were still living in Stogumber:
1851 Stogumber
50
John CHAPPEL, Head, Mar, 70, Carpenter Pauper, Stogumber, Som.
Joan CHAPPEL, Wife, Mar, 72, Stogumber, Som.
John CHAPPELL was baptized 5th March 1780, Stogumber, son of John CHAPPELL and Ann LOVELL.
John CHAPPELL and Ann LOVELL were married at Stogumber on 27th Aug 1769. I believe this John CHAPPELL was buried at Stogumber on 7th Feb 1802, aged 60, so was born about 1742.
Hope this helps!
Best wishes,
Sue
