Hello! You're sharing the same mystery as me! I'm related to Henry Sydney's sister - Charlotte Sophia Webster. I gave up on trying to understand the Jackson/Chappell thing a few years ago, and have just been having another look at it this afternoon.
Sarah Ann who married William Roebuck Webster is named as Ann Jackson (no sign of the Sarah) on the birth certificates of Charlotte Sophia (16th June 1846), and of her brother William Chappell Webster (25th Aug 1841). On the 1841 census Sarah and William Webster are living with William and Charlotte Chappell and I always assumed they were her parents, as in 1861 William Chappell Webster is living with them and they're listed as his grandparents. So then I assumed that Ann Chappell must have married a Jackson before she married William Webster. But she's recorded as a spinster on the marriage certificate to William Webster (12th October 1840).
Just to confuse matters further, I have a fairly strong suspicion that William Roebuck Webster was a bigamist! he's on the 1851 and 1861 censuses with the family in Sheffield. The he disppears. In 1871, 1881, 1891, Sarah Ann is listed as married - but there's no sign of William Roebuck. Then he appears on the 1891 census in Bristol with a new wife who's only 26 and 4 young children. His age is 'wrong' on the census (aged 53), but is listed as Asphalt Contractor (same as in 1861) and born in Beighton. I have a copy of his death certificate in 1893 where age and other details are correct, and new wife was present at death.
It also looks like Sarah Ann and William's daughter Amelia had an illegitimate child - 'Major'Trask in 1885. Strange name for a child I thought. But probably linked to one of the brothers James Trask or John Trask who were both soldiers in the South Lincs regiment. Not sure how they met up but it looks like a good guess at the mo.
I've never worked out whether Sarah/Ann changed her name because certain names were more fashionable, or because she was in trouble with the law. If you got caught committing a crime, you got a longer sentence if you'd got previous, so people often changed their names. Charlotte Sophia appears as Charlotte on some censuses and Sophia on others. Maybe they were all criminals!
Going to keep rummaging on the Jackson/Chappell front. Do let me know if you find anything out.
Best wishes
Kath Graham

I cannot verify nor disqualify much of this work, but thought it would be
good for all to see it. Matthew Chappell is a descendant of Robert/Agnes
of Prince Edward Co, VA 1700's
Virgle Chappell/OKC
Our Chappell family
First found in Huntington where they held a family seat from very ancient
times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and arrival of Duke William
at Hastings in 1066 A.D. The “seat” signified political and economic
influence in the area.
Oliver Cromwell was born in Huntington, UK. He was a devoted puritan and
for a time ruled England under a “republican commonwealth”. He lived during
the reign of Queen Ann the mother of Queen Elizabeth. Sir Thomas Wyatt
himself or his dad was a close friend of Cromwell, and when Thomas was
imprisoned for being suspected of committing adultery with Ann, Cromwell helped to
get him released.
It was Thomas’ son Thomas Jr who was beheaded for leading what came to be
called “Wyatt’s rebellion” while trying to get queen Elizabeth back on the
throne. He was beheaded during the time of “Bloody Mary” and is mentioned
in Foxe’s Book of Martyrs.
Regarding Huntington , the Chappell’s and Cromwell’s must have been
intimately associated in one way or another as both families were well
established in the area both politically and economically and above all, I believe,
religiously.
As the Chappell’s were coming to America, most likely out of religious
motives, we find Sir Francis Wyatt being said to be one of the best Governors
of early colonial Virginia, who also was a descendent of Sir Thomas Wyatt.
The Wyatt’s here in America would become intermarried with the Dandridge
family from whom one would marry our first president George Washington.
As we know, the Bibb family was well established and William Bibb was lord
high Sheriff of Prince Edward County, Virginia. William Bibb was married
to Sarah Wyatt said to be a descendent of Sir Francis Wyatt.
As we know, the Baldwin and Bibb families as well as the Chappell, Terry,
Key and Clark families would all be intermarried. The Clark family is found
in the Wyatt genealogy dating back into England.
It was Thomas Baldwin which married Nancy Ann Bibb; she was also the wife
of Martin Key. She had among others, two daughters named Martha and Mary
Ann. Martha would marry our Jesse Chappell and Mary Ann would marry a
Rev.Henry Terry. Mary Ann would name her daughter’s Nancy Ann Terry and Sally
Wyatt Terry. It is known that all these families went south together including
William Bibb who according to other records I have seen is listed as being
father of Nancy Ann. Also Henry Terry was reported to have died at William’
s place who was reported to be a cousin. This is long held coming from a
William Terry. It can be safely assumed that William Bibb was not only
related to Mary Ann, but most likely her granddad on her mother’s side. After
Terry’s death, Mary Ann moved back up to Virginia to be with her dad Thomas.
Regarding William Bibb, William Terry writes that he was the dad of two
future governors, which goes along with other accounts as well.
So what do we find here? We know that our Chappell’s had to have come from
prominent families. It is clear that our ancestors were involved
personally with the highest structures of Government and indeed were of the nobility
and of the early colonial gentry. We tended to not only sympathize with
religious freedom but become leaders in the movement as well, working not
only within the system, but striving from the outside to bring reformation on
both sides of the water.
Those times were a time of great upheaval; we find that through Martha
Henness, the wife of our John Allen, that we were steeped in the Maryland area
as well. Belonging to “Society of Friends” groups and having a Quaker
background. We also find family representing Maryland in the House of
Burgesses, and tracing various roots back to the Kings of England, France and
others as well. Our ancestors worked for peace and also were willing to die for
freedom, such as we find through John’s dad Jesse. Jesse preached against
slavery during the civil war while living in a hostile area belonging to the
South, after persecution escaped by the grace of God with his family to
higher ground.
Interesting enough, Margaret Wyatt, the mother of John Rogers the
Smithfield martyr (also Foxe’s Book of Martyrs) who was the cousin of Thomas Wyatt
jr., was the sister of Thomas Wyatt sr. and was married not only to John
sr. but also married to a Lee and was the mother of Henry Lee. From Henry
would come the Lees of Virginia and eventually General Robert E. Lee. As a side
note, it is also thought that the Dorcas Lee who was the grandmother of
Robert was also the ancestor of our Martha Henness, although this is
inconclusive.
Also we find that President Davis was very close to the Bibb family and
particularly Martha Dandridge Bibb.
I believe coincidence can be moved by the hand of God. Certainly when I
look back at these things I cannot help but believe that God has had His hand
on our family, blessing us in many ways. It doesn’t matter what our
political affiliations are , neither what church we belong to ( Church is in
the heart), we love those things that make America unique- maybe it can be
said that it does not matter from whom we descend, but that our true blood is
renewed in the sense of our faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In this
sense the Chappell family has something far greater to be proud of, and I’m
thankful to God for His many blessings.

I am hoping someone can help. I am looking for any info on my husbands Grandmother who migrated to Canada sometime after 1925 where she married and had another family (we believe her new husband had something to do with architecture). She left behind a daughter Jean Mary Chappell (my husbands mother)who was left with the Kirkland family in Scotland who later adopted her and we don't know the real reason. We believe she contacted Jean some time around 1978 but are not sure.
I know this is not a lot to go on but it is all we have.
I hope someone can shed some light on this.
Regards
Sally
