Whoooo! Well done! Nice detective work! I vote for him being unmarried on the marriage certificate. Certainly is very shifty in his name changing. Wonder if he was in rouble with the police...
Would love to see the certificate if you can attach it when you get it, please.
Cheers
Kath

And lo and behold, he was her neighbour in 1881. Went by John William Webster, but it sure is him... the sneak!

Hey there,
I found William Roebuck Webster's marriage license with Emily Whiting Robertson. 1882 in Baton Regis, Bristol. He was listed as John Roebuck Webster, which make me wonder if that was the name we went by those two decades he went missing from the census.
I'm going to order it, so I can scan it and email it to you if you'd like. I'm curious to see if it claims him to be a bachelor or a widower...
Kerry

Hmmmm.
I had her down as a 'possible' at some point - but then have made a note that this is the wrong person!
But can't remember why!
Will let you know if I find out anything more.

I'm sure it's nothing, but it doesn't help that an "Ann Jackson Chappell" was born 30 Dec 1820.
NEWARK UPON TRENT,NOTTINGHAM,ENGLAND
father: Simon Chappell, mother: Elizabeth.
Doesn't fit, yet knowing that a "Jackson Chappell" exists??
She was baptized in 1821 and then rebaptized as Anna Jackson Chappell in 1832.

Thank you so much for your replies. I wish it could be a little more cut and dry!!!
I feel like there is an answer somewhere... perhaps the daughters are only related to the Chappell men, who had them illegitimately with other women... the last names were the last names of the mothers?
Although for (Sarah) Ann Jackson's father not to be mentioned on her wedding cert... perhaps it's the other way around. Charlotte Chappell was her mom, but her father was never legitimately William Chappell. So maybe Charlotte Mallendar was with a Jackson when Sarah Ann was conceived.

Hello.
A quick update - to add to the confusion!
I had a look again at the 1871 census showing William Chappell snr - who I have always assumed was Sarah/Ann Jackson/Chappell's father.
He was on the 1861 census as a blacksmith with William C Webster - grandson - aged 19 - living with him and working as a blacksmith's labourer.
William Chappell Webster was William Roebuck Webster's son with Sarah/Ann/Jackson/Chappell.
On the 1871 census, William Chappell is a widow, but has his niece staying with him. She is ANN BETTINSON, aged 45, born Newark, Notts.
I've just had a quick look to see if I could find out who she was and it's made everything even more confusing!
Her father was JAMES CHAPPELL. Which sounds right!
But according to internet records, she was called ANN WEBSTER, and married GEORGE BETTINSON (or BETTERSON) 15th December 1859 in Newark.
I cannot find ANY record of Ann 'Chappell' having married anyone called Webster.
So it looks like James and William Chappell have BOTH managed to produce daughters who have different surnames from them, with no records of how those surnames came about!
I keep trying out different hypotheses on bits of paper but it's making my head hurt!
Hoping your brain can throw light on this one!
Kath

Hello.
I've also been having a very long time out on the ancestry front!Don't think I've touched it for best part of twelve months.
Will try to cover all your questions as best I can.
Have looked into Sarah Ann Jackson marrying a Chappell before and couldn't find any record of a Jackson marrying a Chappell. But then couldn't find any record of her birth either! Which makes it all the more confusing. Guessing that the records aren't on the internet, or are lost, or possibly she was adopted in the very relaxed way that sometimes happened in those days so there isn't any paperwork.
William's second wife is Emily (not got a marriage certificate). On the 1891 census they're in the St Paul's area of Bristol at 89 North Road (haven't Google Earth-ed that to see if it's still there). He's listed as 'William R Webster - Head - M - 53 - Asphalt paving contractor - Derbyshire Beighton' So apart from the age (which then jumps 20 years on his death certificate 2 years later!) it looks right.
Wife Emily - 26 - born Bristol.
Children; Florence N, 8; Agnes M, 7; Ethel, 4; Bertie,1. All born in Bristol.
Have death certificate for William Roebuck Webster 18th Oct 1893 aged 74 - 89 North Road - Cancer of rectum - certified by EW Webster - wife.
Back to the other half of the family. Sarah Ann is listed as 'Ann Webster' on 1891 census. Still a 'wife' but no husband in the house. Living with daughter Amelia, 23 (who is on the previous censuses, so that matches) and with Amelia's son 'Major' aged 5.
Have birth certificate for Major Trask Webster - 6th Nov 1885. No father. Have done a bit of detective work and have strong suspicion (with a name like 'Major'!) that the unnamed father could be in the army.
Lo and behold! Two soldiers - John Trask - aged 19 on 1881 census - and James Trask - aged 25 on 1881 census - both Privates in the 69th South Lincolnshire regiment in 1881. Which isn't exactly on the doorstep of Sheffield but isn't a huge distance away. I'm guessing that one of them is the father (reckon it's the younger one!) and that they were on some kind of exercise in the Sheffield area. The regiment was in York in the 1881 census, which is about 60 miles from Sheffield, so they obviously travelled a bit. Both Trasks from Somerset.
I like the way that the illegitimate offspring has a higher rank than the (possible) scoundrel father!
Think that's answered your Qs for now - but please do let me know if you want any more inormation - I have lots of certificates and census printouts so I might be sitting on some bits and pieces that you don't know about yet.
Best wishes
Kath

So sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you!!! I had to give myself an Ancestry time out as it was so easy to loose myself for hours and days trying to piece the puzzle together. I needed to quit cold turkey for a while!
Thank you so much for replying. It really is a mystery and trying to figure it out is frustrating because I can't let it go!!
I agree that William probably was a bigamist because he really does disappear and Sarah Ann certainly isn't a widow during those years. Thank you for your insight and researched information.
One thing I was thinking was what if Sarah Ann Jackson married a Chappell and the Chappells living with William Chappell Webster are his paternal grandparents? Of course, there's no documentation to back this up...
What is the name of William's second wife? And do you happen to know when Sarah Ann died? I see an index for 1897, but I can't be sure it's her. Who is she living with in 1891?
Sorry for all the questions, but you definitely have a little more information than me!
Thanks again for reply, and my apologies for the late reply.
Kerry
