I know that both brothers went from Conn. to this area of Canada as well as Bia Verte, Nova Scotia.
I know that the brothers returned to Conn in 1789 or so to claim their inheritance (Lebanon, I believe). I have a copy of the will.
I know that the parents of the brothers were, Jabez, son of Caleb, son of George the immigrant. The mother was Ziporrah Bill (d. of Phillip Bill) connected to Delano family (as in FDR), close blood relative.
I do not know if parents were in Canada or just the sons?
They went to Canada like so many New Englander young sons, to take up the land left by the French after their defeat by the Brittish.
Asahel was in Whitehall in the 1790 census and after in the finger lakes region, New York.
Please call me with your phone # - I will return the call & we can make sure that all our info is shared.
Marilyn Scott Torres 831 438-5104(my G'ma's maiden name was Chappell, four or five generations after Asahel) - B.DesMoines,Iowa) I don't know how to do these postings???

Concerning the marriage of Chappell-Barker, I have never found a Virginia
record of that marriage. I don't say it never happened, but I have not
found that record.

The earliest record we have found of the name "Chappell Creek" is
contained
in a Patent issued to William Barker when he was granted a 400 acre
plantation on the east side and joining onto the creek. It is to be noted
that
Barker's application for the land was dated, 22 July 1634, a full year
before
our Thomas Chappell sailed for America..
"To all to whom these presents shall come. I, Capt John West, Esqr.
Governor etc. Send Greetings in Our Lord God Everlasting. Whereas by
letters
bearing date thee two and twentieth day of July 1634, A. D. Know ye that
I, the
said Capt. John West, Esqur. Gov., doe with ye consent of ye Council of
State give and grant unto William Barker, Mariner, fower Hundred Acres of
Land scituated, lying and being in Charles Cittie County and bounded upon
a
creek called Chappell's Creek, south into the woods, East along the
(James)
River, and adjoining Merchant's Hope (Plantation)."
This area would be on the east side of Chappell Creek and join onto the
creek.
Our Thomas Chappell sailed to America, arriving in the Colonies
July/August 1635.

The Speedwell was not owned by John Chappell when it tried to sail with

Chappell Family update:
"our" Ed/Edwin/Edward Chappell living with Stubblefield family 1860 California forward:
In searching for his parents we found:
Thomas and Sarah "Sallie" Chappell living in Salt Lake City on the 1850 census data - both were from Rhode Island and they had a son, Edwin, born in Connecticut about 1834. Fits "our" Edwin Chappell to a "T"
http://earlylds.com/getperson.php?personID=I5656&tree=Earlyldshttp://ourfamilyhistories.org/getperson.php?personID=I161264&tree=00
Residence: 1850 Great Salt Lake, Utah Territory
Residence: 1851 Hawkesbury, Gloucestershire, England
Residence: 1860 Salt Lake, Utah Territory
Residence: 1871 Weybridge, Surrey, England
Although I doubt that "the Thomas Armstrong Chappell migrated to England, others speculate that he migrated to the West Coast -CA or WA.
Back to Edwin:
California Death Index gives his DOD as 22 October 1909
Death info at Santa Barbara courthouse - Book B page 127 line 3701:
Edwin Chappel was 74, male, born in the US, widowed, a farmer; died in the county hospital of cardiac hypertrophy, physician was J. C. Bainbridge; buried in the Santa Maria cemetery, Ricketts was the mortuary.
Obituary - Santa Maria Times, October 30, 1909
Laid to Rest
Edward Chappell, a native of Connecticut, aged 73 years and 9 months, died on Friday of last week. Services were conducted in T.W. Jones & Sons' undertaking parlors on Sunday afternoon after which the remains were interred in the Santa Maria cemetery. The deceased died in Santa Barbara and had been ill for some time.
Santa Barbara Gen Soc Web page notes he is buried in Santa Maria, Cemetery - date of burial is 24 October 1909. (they have him listed as Edward, not Edwin)
We speculate that Ed/Edwin/Edward Chappell joined up with the Stubblefield/Wilkinson family in Utah and we find him within their family from then on.
Census Data for Ed:
1850 Utah b. abt 1834 in Connecticut (age recorded as 16) - both parents born in Rhode Island
Edwin [Ed] Chappell found listed among the families of Nancy Stubblefield & Martha Stubblefield-Williams -is listed as 25 years old, we find him being listed in consecutive Census with the Stubblefield family,
Edwin Chappell listed in the 1850 CA census married a Nancy Grissom [listed living with the Stubblefield family in same census] & had a daughter Serena.
Nancy Grissom-Chappell is a mystery.
Edwin & Serena continue to be listed living among the Stubblefield family.
[w/ daughter,Serena Chappell Heacox]
1860 Calif b. abt 1835 (age recorded as 25)
1870 Calif b. abt 1840 (age recorded as 30)
1880 Calif b. abt 1840 (age recorded as 40 - transcribed incorrectly as 60) - both parents born in Rhode Island

I just received some additional information about Thomas Armstrong Chappell from a family descendant:
Thomas Armstrong Chappell is my husband's great-grandfather. His first wife was Sarah Gavitt. they had three children-George Armstrong, Edwin, and Lucy. Thomas an Sarah were born in Rhode Island. Their first son was born in Rhode Island. Edwin and Lucy were born in conn.
Thomas became a part of the Mormon movement. He and his family plus mother-in-law were with the second group of Mormons that moved to Utah Territory in 1848. They are found in the 1850 census living at Mill Creek, Utah Territory. .
Thomas Armstrong Chappell practiced polygamy. He took a second wife in 1854. He married Mary Elizabeth Waldrop (my husband's great-grandmother) in June 1854. They had three children--Susan, Henry and James.
the 1856 Utah Territory census index lists Thomas Chappell, Sarah, Maria, Mary, Alice, Sarah,Susan, George Armstrong Chappell and Washington Phelps. The first Sarah listed is his first wife, Maria is the widow of his son George Armstrong, Mary is the second wife, Alice is unknown, second Sarah is Sarah Phelps (daughter of Mary) Susan is the daughter of Thomas and Mary, George Armstrong is the son of Maria and grandson of Thomas and Sarah Chappell, and Washington Phelps is the son of Mary.
Edwin Chappell is not found in the 1856 census index. Also, not found in the 1860 Utah Territory Census. One suspects Edwin left Utah Territory some time after 1850. I did not find him in the 1852 California State census.
Thomas Chappell, his first wife Sarah, second wife Mary and Mary's children (Susan . Henry and James Chappell and Sarah Washington Phelps) are found in the 1860 Utah Territory Census.
records show Thomas, Sarah and Mary joined the RLDS Church in 1864. In March 1854 Thomas sold his property in Utah Territory. This is the last record of Thomas Chappell. There has been a story that Thomas moved toward California. However, this cannot be proven.
Mary and her children (Phelps and Chappell) moved to Iowa. Mary married Benjamin Gavitt in 1864. She had two children with Gavitt. Some suspect. that Benjamin Gavitt was the younger brother of Sarah GAvitt Chappell. The Gavitt family is found in the 1870 census in Iowa. In the 1880 census Mary is a widow. She moved to Washington State 1895-1900 and died at Startup, Washington in 1907.
Sarah Gavitt Chappell is buried in Iowa.
Henry Chapell (my husband's grandfather) moved to Washington territory in 1888-1889. He married in 1889. He would raise his family in Washington. He died at Entiat, Washington in 1933.
The Edwin Chappell in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census has the correct place of birth and year of birth to connect to the Edwin Chappell of the Thomas Chappell and Sarah Gavitt family. One only needs that final link. I was hoping to find an obituary to make that final link.
It looks like we have to find a few more documents that connect our Ed/Edwin/Edward Chappell in CA to Thomas Armstrong Chappell family in Utah 1850.
