The way we as Chappell's pronounce Chappell is as different as the many spellings I have run across. Even here in North Carolina you find a few Shappell's. I beleive the difference in the way it is said could of came about by regional dialect or someone way back when decided Sh sound more important than Ch, kind of the same way people pronounce schedule.
Yes, I am of the Perquimans-Chowan Chappell's... Henry Rufus line..

Amos Chappell was married to Mary Eliza Garde on May 29, 1890 in the Old St. Georges Church located in Staleybridge, Lancashire, England. He came over to America to visit an uncle and went back to England. I am not sure if this was before or after he married. They had 4 children: Benjamin Kenworthy (b. 1891, d. 1963), Sarah Ann (b. 1893, d. 1963), Amy Margaret Chappell (b. 1896, d. 1985) and Bessie Eliza Chappell (b. 1898, d. 1899). They left England in June 1899. Bessie died on the voyage over. They went to live with the uncle in Rappahannock District, Essex, VA. Amos died on April 8, 1901 at the age of 36. Mary Eliza married Charles Lumpkin on June 4, 1902. They had no children. In 1910 they resided in Richmond, Marshal Ward, Richmond, VA. He died in May 1913. She then went to live with her daughter, Amy, and her husband, Jesse Hubbard Wright, in South Bend, Indiana. She visited her siblings who had come over from England and moved to the Rhode Island area. !
She died on May 21, 1941 in South Bend, Indiana where she is buried.
Amos's birth certificate does not show a father, only his mother, Ann Chappell. Her residence is listed at the time in the household of her father Thomas Chappell.
Hope this helps.

Ok I did think this might be right His name is Amos Chappell but i have check all the census records in Va and they dont seem to be there anymore.
I have checked the LDS site and the Essex co. website.
You might try getting on the Essex co. Va board and asking for someone on there for Death records for Amos or Mary or one of their kids. Or even marriages for them. it would list the first name of the bride.
Wish I could help more.
Sue

Did they stay in Essex co or go somewhere else. he Said he came over here in 1899 and I checked Ellis Island and he did not come thru there under that spelling. But it looks like all of them were born in England and came here at the same time.

I will do some more looking but could not find a Robert Garde in Va at all. Nor did I find any Amy married to a Wright up to 1930 census, so Unless she married under a different name. I do think that this is probably the right family, with just a few dates off which will happen in the census records.
I will also look to see who the Chappells parents are if you need that also.

I am looking for the grandparents and parents of Creighton Chappell born during the late 1800's. He resided either in the State of Alabama or Louisanna. His daughter name was Mary Chappell, prior to marriage.
