That makes sense since my line is from Nottinghamshire... and we pronounce it like you do. Or at least half of us do.

My wife's great grandfather was Edwin Chappell born in England about 1834. He married Edith Reeves also born in England about 1837. They had 2 sons: Charles born in Canada about 1868 and William Henry born 8 March 1870 in Jackson City, MI. and died 26 June 1918 in Barton, MD. I don't have anything about them between England and Canada. I do have lots about John Henry's descendents.
Anyone interested or have anymore information...........
Bob. I am supposedly descended from the George Chappell of CT line also,
however can't prove it. My ggf is Jeremiah Chappell of New London, CT, b.
abt 1815. He had 2 bros., Charles and Israel. Jeremiah's sons were George
1839, Charles 1843, Franklin 1856, William 1857, my gf). Jeremiah's father
was Lester Chappell, mother was Lucretia. That's as far back as I can go.
Any possible connections? Richard Chappell

My Chappells are from Oklahoma but when Grandpa came north to NY with the
Army during WWII he changed how he pronounced it. I grew up with it
pronounced Shappell and that is how I thought it was always pronounced. It
never hit me that Grandma always called Grandpa's father Tom Chappell
(pronounced Chapel). I asked her about it and she said that it is pronounced
Chapel in Oklahoma but when she met Grandpa he told her his name was Bob
Chappell (sh sound), and she never knew the difference until she met his
family.

For more variety:
My Chappell, Chapell, Chapell, Chapel, Chaple line came from England to MA. then CT and then to New York State.? They settled in Bolivar NY.? After the Civil War, they moved to Fitzgerald, GA.? They pronounced their surname with the long A sound...
As you can see, there were also many changes in the spelling since the late 1500s.? Presently, it is spelled Chaple.

I think my line of Chappell started with:
John Thomas Chappell, Capt. b. c 1590, Southampton, ENG,
Occup: Master of "Speedwell", m. Mary Barker , b. c 1590, ENG.
John died c 1635, London, ENG.
Children:
+ Thomas Chappell b. 1612. who married Mary Sarah Bannister and
immigrated from Gravesend England to Charles City County Virginia and died
there in 1655.
He had two children a daughter of unknown name and a son Thomas Chappell II.
This Thomas II married Elizabeth Ann Jones and they had 5 children Thomas,
Samuel, Robert James and Mary.... Then my line goes to Mary born probably
about 1700? and she married John Tomlinson Sr. Still in Virginia.
If any of you have this line I would be interested in correcting my mistakes
if there are any <G>I'm not known as being perfect!

Great question. I was hindered by all of my Chappell ancestors being gone before I started researching, and I always assumed it was pronounced "CH" like "chip", but not only did some people out here tell me it was "SH", but that also said it had a long A sound like "SHAPE". I'm guessing there are a few different pronunciations being used.
