Do you know when Henry Thomas was born?
I've found a Joseph Chappell b. @1828 on the 1850 census at the Norfolk Navy Yard. In 1860 there's one in Princess Anne with wife Amy and children Eleanora(5), Mary(4), and Geo W.(2). Could this be the ones you're looking for?
It may be hard to find his parents, but not necessarily impossible....let me know if this sounds like the family you're looking for and I'll keep looking.
Carolyn

Hi, I was wondering if you'd ever learned anything more about your Chappel(l) family in Oswego Co.? I'm just now beginning research on my ggg grandmother, Mary (Chappell) Oakley b. 1815 in NY. In later years it appears that she lived with her husband Platt B. Oakley (who was an inn keeper) in Schroeppel township, Oswego Co., NY. She is buried there in the Pennellville Cemetery,(d. December 8, 1892 age 76 yrs). She out lived her husband, who died in 1863. On the 1870 census, I believe she is living with her brother Darius Chappell and his family. Her daughter, my gg grandmother Mary "Adeline or Adelia" is living there as well. There are half a dozen or so Chappells in the cemetery there, and I believe that Edward Chappell b. 1781 could have been her father.
Does any of this look familiar?
Thanks,
LeAnn

I would love to know this is all true, but has anyone been able to document any of it? Particularly that Thomas was Captain John's son?
I hate to sound skeptical, but I've never seen any real evidence that this is so. Could someone please enlighten me?
Did any of these Chappell descendants become Quakers as did some of the York/Elizabeth City County ones? Is there a connection between these families? I have at least 3 lines of Chappells. Thank you so very much!

thanks, I'm glad to know what happened to John Chappell. Yes, I planned to use his son for Colonial Dames purposes, but I still wanted to clear up the info on Captain John.

Colonial Dames XVII Century no longer accepts Captain John Chappell, they say he never settled in the U.S. which is contrary to the family records I have. I've been stuck on finding documentation for Joab Chappell, born 1781, died 1833. Brenda Chappell Birmelin
