I'm a relative of Joseph Eden Suddard - child of Bridget Kitchen. So how distantly related are we anyway!

Kevin,
Judging from the places he lived and died, it is quite possible that your John came from the Quaker Chappells of early VA/NC. Many of them went to Belmont, OH, and to Indiana. I don't know if any of the New England families went to those places or not, but I do know some of the southern ones did.
Good luck.
Carolyn

I am looking for anyone who might have information on John Chappell. He was my great great grandfather. I believe that he was born in Preble County, Ohio in 1819. He died in Ft. Wayne, Indiana 12 Jan 1871. He had a son named Jonathan Freeland Chappell who was born in 11 December 1847 in Westfield, Hamilton County, Indiana and died 23 Jul 1915 in Fallcreek, Hamilton County, Indiana. He had a daughter named Ova Uscalle Chappell born 30 Dec 1889 and died 1 Jul 1959 in Indianapolis, IN. Ova was my paternal grandmother. She married Esmond Earl Patterson 23 Apr 1918 in Marion, Indiana.
I have a family bible, but it doesn't go very far back. It also says that the family name was actually La Chappelle. Has anyone else encountered this? I would love to know who the ancestors of John Chappell were.
Thank you
Kevin Patterson

Kevin-
The genealogy book that covers the branch of the CHAPPELL family south of
the Mason/Dixon Line; "Chappell - Dickey and Allied Families", by P.E.
Chappell eludes to the fact that the early strands of the family were
Vikings that settled [conquered] in Normandy, France. Some took on the name
d' La Chappelle, or a variant of that. Then in 1066 along with William they
and others went to England and re-arranged the landscape a little and
settled there where the name was Anglicized to CHAPPELL [and CHAPEL] as we
know it today. I have seen similar legends regarding the name published in
the genealogy column of the old "Boston Transcript" around the turn of the
20th century and an early family genealogist in my family tree also wrote
the same account in a letter to my grandfather in 1913.
I have a few unattached John CHAPPELLs in my database but none fit your time
frame all that well. Good Hunting!

Dear Alysen,
You have my family (Joseph and Albinia Gay). I have some info up to my
father, Thomas Gwynne Chappell. I will send it to you when I hear from you.
Hearing from you is a very happy surprise.
Sincerely,
Mary Chappell Langan
