Hi All,
I too am interested in the African American Chappells from Halifax as I am researching some of my family that lived in Mecklenburg, Va and have a Tamar Chappell born 1840 living with William Lockett and his wife Mary on the 1900 Census Clarksville Mecklenburg Va...Tamar is listed as mother in law so I'm thinking Mary is her daughter...I'm wondering if this is the same Tamar Chappell thats listed on the 1880 Census from Banister, Halifax Va and if so who were her parents etc.?
Thanks for any leads anyone may have
Richard

I have a Mary Chappell who married John Williams in my database... Mary came from MD...Her brother, James C. Chappell, is my ancestor... They were found in the 1776 census of Harford County, MD (Susquehannah Hundred) in the home of a Mary Thompson... I have tried for years to get proof of their father, who I have been told may be George Chappell...but no written proof has been found...A researcher told me he saw a citation in a book in the Library of Congress - which showed George left these two children, ages 7 and 8, in the care of a church member, Mary Thompson, but he failed to get a copy...and the librarian there can't find it!...James came to Surry County, NC and some of his descendants went to Indiana... Please email me your email address so we can compare notes... LADLSL(a)aol.com

Joab Chappell left Perquimans County NC in 1810 and settled about 8 miles east of what is now Petersburg, Pike Co. Ind. He went to stockade at White Oak Springs where his son Stephen was the first white child born on 15 Sept. 1811. Stephen married Hannah Miller from PA and they had 7 children. William Elliott Chappell was my great-great grandfather. We had a Margaret, but she was called Maggie and born in 1872.
Job Chappell went to Northwest Territory in 1809-1810. He is buried at Chappell Cemetery in Otwell. I'm guessing Otwell is in Pike Co., but I live in NC, so I really don't know.
William Chappell maried to Elizabeth Boyce moved to NW Territory in abt. 1810.
Josiah Chappell also went to NW Territory in abt. 1810.
Try the Northeast NC Family Research Society, I think they have a website and they know all the Chappells that came out of Perquimans County. The Chappells were Quakers at that time. Brenda Chappell Birmelin

Please send the Chappell file to endabre(a)bellsouth.net. I have a lot of info, but I think i'm missing a generation. Also, the National Colonial Dames XVII Century has decided that John Chappell of the Speedwell never settled in America. Brenda Birmelin
