Hi Peggy!
First off, Abigail was a Boren, not a Bowen. The name was changed in later years as that is how it was pronounced. There is another Bowen family in the Pickens area. There is no documented proof of Abigail's lineage, but she is believed to be the daughter of Joseph an Lavinia ?? Boren who were in the area at the time. The other older Boren's seem to have moved off from the Old Pendleton District and these were the only ones left.
Abigail Boren and James "John" Chappell were married sometime after 1830. The first documented child we have for them is Joseph Grisham Chappell (my gg-grandfather) from the 1850 Pickens Co, SC census (I am joining the UDC under his CSA military record.) However, I think there was another female older than him referenced by the 1840 Pickens census stating that there was a female aged 10-15 in the household.
Note the name of James "John" Chappell. In almost every document, James is listed as James. Only the 1850 census lists him as a John. Sometimes in the old days, James and John were interchangeable, it seems. He is buried in the old Bowie cemetery in Pickens Co, SC. I think it is listed as the Ellenburg, Nimmons, Alexander, Anderson, Barton Cemetery on Big Eastatoe in Pickens Co, SC. George Bowie, JR, in an interview with Nealie Chappell Chapman and Leon Anders, called him Jimmy Chappell. I think this cemetery was also called the Field cemetery at one time.
The Chappell's lived on Big Laurel Mountain in Pickens County at the old Willis Place. I don't know who the Willis' were, but did find some prior to 1830 in Pickens. George Bowie said that Jimmy Chappell came from Newberry District, so maybe he came to Pickens looking for land, a bride, etc.
The death certificates of their children state that Abigail's name was Boren and also names James Chappell as the father. Long story on why the name was changed to Bowen, but it was pronounced that way and still is. The Boren's were an interesting family. The ones that stayed in upstate SC/western NC, anyway. Abigail was a witness in the 1843 murder of a male child born to Nancy Boren-perhaps a younger sister or a niece. These Boren's are grouped together in court documents of the time in Pickens and Oconee Counties, SC.
Unless someone can come up with a Family Bible, then the only proof that Abigail and James were married would be the census records and death certificates of their children. BTW, in the 1900 Pickens census, Abigail stated that she had 12 children with 8 living. We have documented 11 children with 7 living as of 1900. Their sons, Joseph Grisham Chappell, Elias Earl Chappell, and Andrew Jackson Chappell died in the Civil War (Joseph at Appomattox, Earl in the hospital at Greenville, TN, and AJ at Camp Douglas POW Camp in Chicago. Another son, William H., born about 1850 must have died prior to 1860 as he is not listed as a child in the 1860 Pickens census. That leaves that one female child from the 1840 census yet to be accounted for.
I have copies of several of James and Abigail's children's death certificates. May I ask what your lineage back to them is? Mine goes: James and Abigail Boren Chappell, Joseph Grisham Chappell md. Terrissa Gantt, William Martin Chappell md. Eveline Patterson, Luner Elizabeth Chappell md. Elliott Marion "Elec" Cantrell SR (my grandparents.)
A probable sister to Jimmy Chappell would be Delilah Chappell who married James Boren-a possible brother to Abigail. The families are so intertwined in later generations.
Another interesting tidbit is a Eugenia Chappell who married Andrew Pickens Calhoun-son of the former Vice President and Congressman, John C. Calhoun. John C. Calhoun had a plantation on what is now the Clemson University campus in present day Pickens Co, SC. I don't know what relationship Eugenia had with our Chappell's, but maybe she was some kind of kin and that may be what brought the Chappell's to the Pickens area. Her father was the Congressman John Joel Chappell of SC. Eugenia died in 1834 and her son, Eugene Chappell Calhoun (born 1833) died in 1835. Andrew Pickens Calhoun then married another woman whose name I cannot remember and he died in 1865.
There was a Jesse Chappell who died in 1810 in Pendleton District, SC. He had several children and may be the progenitor of our Chappell's. We just don't know without finding a Bible, land record, etc. He had a son named John who could be the John from the 1820 and 1830 Pickens census. John from 1830 had a male child in the household that could be our James. He was living 3 doors down from Abner Chastain which puts him in the general vicinity of our James Chappell in later years.

Hello,
I am documenting the lineage of Abigail Bowen who married John Chappell c. 1834. John Chappell is reputed to be buried in the Bowen Family in SC. Does anyone know where this is located? I cannot find any proof that they were married. Do you know of a Bible, a legal document, or anything I can use for proof? I will go to whatever county (in SC & NC) to get a copy if I can just find it.

if you can provide me with a few dates of birth for this Elias, I can look through other family sheets. He's not on Elisha Chappell and Sarah (sally) Tulberts family group sheet, but if the dates are more recent than theirs, it might be one of their children who had Elias. when was Elias born, and where--maybe he was a son of one of the Chappell family who stayed behind in NC, and came to join the rest of his family group later. first of all, I need some dates......
