That's right, but that is the 1900 census. I read the last child as 'Icie' L., b. Jul 1899. The 'I' in her name is definitely different than the 'J' in Jerold.
I'll go search around VA a bit. There's always the chance that dad took the kids back for a visit or just to go 'home' to his home in VA. My dad did that after he retired from the Air Force. Then, since John grew up in Indiana, when he was ready, he went back to IN.
Keep on keeping on!

In the 1910 Census for Clinton County, IN I found the following:
John F. Chappell
Elizabeth E (?) [Wife]
Children
Ova C U (b. 1890) [My Grandmother]
Roland (b. 1886)
Ravannah (b. 1889) [instead of Ra Vanna]
Eva E (b. 1890)
Coalise (b. 1893)
Jerold L (b. 1896)
Jese L (b. 1898)
I thought I had found John's father in Virginia in the 1870 Census as the 1910 Census says that his father was born in Virginia. The problem is the John was supposed to have been born in Indiana in 1848, but the 1870 Census has him with his father Stephen in Surry, Virginia. It might be right and John might have indeed been born in Virginia and moved to Indiana by 1880, but I am not sure at this point.
I've got no luck with living Chappell relatives. I don't any and I never knew my grandmother. My father doesn't know much either. He thought that they were a very poor family and moved around a lot, but I can't depend on that.
For the longest time my father thought her mother was French and that her name was actually La Chappelle, but that isn't true.
I have some letters that I am going to get off this computer and go read. I'll let you know if I find out anything.

Kevin...can we exchange email addresses so we can take this off list...since it doesn't appear that anyone else is jumping in? I have found them in the 1900 census...more children, some may have died between 1900 and 1910. John F. Chappell was b. Dec 1847. We may find more leads in this and as we go on. He and Elizabeth had been married 17 years and had 8 children with 7 still living at that time.
Email me at moreancestors(a)comcast.net, it will be easier to communicate that way.

Kevin, do you have access to the censuses? 1910 clearly has one more child for John and Elizabeth, as I mentioned before. Oca, age 17, was md. to Marvin Wilson? They were living at home with her parents, having been married only 1 year in that census.
I'm really having a dickens of a time finding John's parents.
You are doing right by working backwards...that is the only way to properly do this. Start with what you know, then move back.
Are any of your aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc., still alive and with their wits. That's the next step after finding and putting together all that you have. You then contact any living relatives who might just know one little nugget that will help you go back more. Maybe a wife's maiden name, or in what town someone was born...
I'll be happy to help you in any way I can.

I've found another possibility in the 1850 census, although the parents birthplaces don't match up to 1910, which often happens.
In Jackson, Wells, Indiana, there is an Edmund Chappel, age 25, b. Carolina, wife, Rebecca, age 23, b. VA, daughter Mary age 5 b. IN, and John H. or W. age 2, b. IN.
What are some of the downline names? Those can be a clue as children can often be named for ancestors, etc.
Let me know if anything sounds good.
Carolyn
Nope, this family is on the 1910 census in IN with 4 kids..the oldest being 24 and the youngest, 17.
