It's time for a Roll Call - let's try to find some cousins and ancestors!
Please send a post to the list about your CHAPPELL ancestors, and remember to include all the information you have available about when and where they lived. Maybe others on the list will also have data about them, and can help you!
Make sure you CHANGE THE SUBJECT LINE of your e-mail to the name of the ancestor you're looking for, and send it to CHAPPELL-L(a)rootsweb.com
Happy Hunting!

I am looking for info on my Samuel Chappell born before 1770 and died 1817. I do not know where he was born but he settled in Sandisfield, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts. Is there any chance our Chappell's are the same family?
I'd be happy to share any info I have on my line. And I'd like to take a moment to thank the many who've so graciously shared their research with me, including but not limited to Barb Price, Barbara Smith, Teddie Sue Carter, Pam Brautigam, Stephen Seachord, Sondra Foley and so many others. You are all angels and I appreciate you very much! I welcome and appreciate all corrections to the data I have.
I'm researching Mary Margaret Chappell, b. 15 December 1873 in Halifax County, Virginia & d. 20 December 1857 in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. She married Michael Ashford 18 November 1805 in Wilson County, Tennessee. (Still don't know who Michael's parents were; there were only about 10,000 Michael Ashfords running around! <g>) It's probable that Mary Margaret was the daughter of James Chappell & Martha Wooding, although we don't have definitive proof. Mary Margaret named her eldest daughter Prudence, and if she (MM) was the daughter of James Chappell, then her grandmother would have been named Prudence, too.
James Chappell was b. 1754 in Amelia County, Virginia and d. after 1783. Was it in Tennessee? I don't have his death info in my files. He married Martha Wooding, with her father's consent, on 22 June 1781 in Halifax County, Virginia. (Martha was the d/o Col. Robert Wooding & Mary Marable.) Beside the probable Mary Margaret, James & Martha were parents of Robert Wooding Chappell, James W. Chappell, William Chappell & Humphrey Chappell.
James' parents were John Chappell & Prudence [--?--]. John was b. c1720 & died 1775 in Amelia County, Virginia. He left a lengthy will. An abstract:
Will written, 21 September 1774 in Amelia County, Virginia, Probated 27 April 1775 in Amelia County, Virginia.
Bequests:
Wife Prudence Chappell, plantation where I now live with 1/3 of land to be laid off to her by my Executors; also lend her 7 Negroes: Spark, Phillace, Goller, Abram, Jack, Bob & Dilsey; also my livestock and household furniture for life.
At her decease, above Negroes, stock and household furniture to be given as follows:
Son Robert Chappell, 1/3 my land adjoining lines of Abram Green, John Powell, John Old and William Crawley; also Negro boy Anthony now in his possession.
Son John Chappell, 1/2 my tract of land he now lives on on Namasene Creek adjoining Edward Dudley, Thomas Jones & James Chappell; Also Negro boy Goller lent my wife, & a young mare.
Son James Chapel, lower half tract of land on Namasene Creek adjoining Thomas Jones, John Hamlin & Edward Dudley; desire straight line to be from Jones' line to Dudley's to divide between John & James Chappell; also Negro boy Abram lent my wife.
Son William Chappell, all that part my land U/S my spring branch with that part of plantation & house thereone; also Negro woman Tabb.
Son Samuel Chappell, land & plantation lent my wife which will be more than 1/3 my land after Robert Chappell's land & William Chappell's land is laid off as before mentioned; also Negro boy Bob.
Daughter Prudence Chappell, Negro boy Jack.
Negro given my son William Chappell may be hired out yearly until he becomes 21 and money thus earned to be divided between my sons James & William. If one, two, or three Negroes die that were given John, James, William, Samuel & Prudence Chappell, they may be made good out of the three Negroes lent my wife, namely Spark, Phillis & Dilsey. At my wife's decease, all household furniture, livestock & 3 Negroes mentioned (if not wanted to make good any loss) to be equally divided between my son John Chappell, James Chappell, William Chappell, Samuel Chappell & my daughter Prudence Chappell.
Executors: Robert Chappell & William Crawley
Witnesses: Archer Johnson, William Booth & William (x) Moor
The Inventory & Appraisal of John Chappell Sr.'s estate was held in 1775, and gives John's date of death as 25 May 1775. The appraisers wer David Crawley, Abraham Green and Archer Johnson. No estate value was given. The estate included his slaves; Negro men Goaler & Abram; women Philis & Tabb; boys Boy & Jack; child Dilsey.
Prudence died c1778 in Amelia County, Virginia. Her estate was inventoried & appraised in April of that year. Besides James, their children were Prudence, Robert, John, William & Samuel.
John's parents were Robert Chappell Sr. & Sarah, whose maiden name may have been Cox or Cocke. Robert was b. c1680 in Virginia & d. between 3 Feb 1723 & 12 Feb. 1724 in Prince George's County, Virginia. He left a will:
Prince George County Wills and Deeds 1713-1728, p. 701
Will of Robert Chappell
3 February 1723
Proved 12 February 1724
In the name of God! Amen. The third of February Anno Domini, one thousand seven hundred and twenty-three, I Robert Chappell of Prince George county, Planter, being sick in body, but of good and perfect memory, thanks to Almighty God, and calling to remembrance the uncertainty of this transitory life, and that all flesh must yield unto death when it shall please God to call, do make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following.
First. Being penitent and sorry for all my sins, most humbly desiring forgiveness for the same and commending my soul to Almighty God, my Savior and Redeemer, to whom and by whose love I trust and believe assuredly to be saved and have full remission and forgiveness for all my sins, and to inherit the Kingdon of Heaven. And my body I commit to the earth, to be decently buried under the direction of my executrix, to be hereafter named; and for the settlement of my estate and all goods, chattels and debts as it has pleased God to bestow upon me, I do order, give and dispose of it in the manner and form following:
Imprimis: I give and bequeath to my on Robert forty shillings in cash, one feather bed, my gun and wearing apparel, my horse, Turk, with saddle and furnishings, three cows and calves and my negro boy Dick to be delivered to him at the age of 21 years.
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah one feather bed, forty shillings in cash and my negro girl named Frank, to be delivered to her when of age or at the time of marriage.
Item: I give to my daughter, Mary, one negro girl named Jenny.
Item: I give to my son John Five pounds Sterling in cash and my negro girl named Patti.
Item: I give to my daughter Ann my negro girl Amy, three pounds in cash and my sorrel mare, and her increase, (if there be any) to be divided between my two daughters Mary and Ann.
Item: I give to my youngest son James my negro boy Tom, to be given to him when he comes of age.
Item: I give to my beloved wife, Sarah, my negroes Harry, Jerry and Lydia, with the sidesaddle and furnishings, also three pounds nine shillings Sterling cash, and after her decease I give the negro boy Jerry to my son Robert. And it is my desire that the first increase that lives of all those before mentioned negroes I give one to my daughter Ann, and another to my son James; and if there be any others I give them to my children equally and to their issue forever. If any of my children die before becoming of age then I desire that they may be divided equally between the rest of my children living to maturity.
Item: I give and bequeath to my beloved wife all the rest of my estate whether in debts due me or otherwise, except what household goods or moveables are left after my decease according to inventory, and these I desire may be equally divided between my wife and children, as they become of age, by any two neighbors as my wife thinks fit. And whatever cattle, sheep or hogs I have, I leave unto her to be given at her discretion, or any part of them, to my children as they become of age.
I do hereby make and appoint my dear and beloved wife Sarah full and sole executrix of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking, disannulling and making void all former wills and bequests by me made, and declaring this only to be my last will and testament.
In witness whereto I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written.
Robert Chappell (signed)
After Robert's death, Sarah remarried to William Crawley. She died in Amelia County, Virginia. Her will:
Amelia county, Virginia Will Book 1, page 188:
Will of Sarah Crawley
11 December 1759
Proved 22 January 1761
In the name of God, Amen. The eleventh day of December, A.D. 1759, I, Sarah Crawley, of the Parish of Raleigh and county of Amelia, being through the mercy of God, in health and lf sound and disposing memory, ro make and ordain this my last will and testament.
Imprimis. I give to my son Robert Chappell forty shillings, to be paid by my executors.
Item. I give to my daughter Mary Morgan forty shillings, current money.
Item. I give to my daughter Sarah Burton forty shillings, current money.
Item. I give to my son William Crawley one chest of drawers which he now has in his possession.
Item. I desire that my daughters Mary Morgan and Ann Neal divide my wearing clothes equally between themselves.
Item. I give to my daughter, Ann Neal my saddle, pewter, bed and furniture which I have at my son-in-law William Neals with the use of Negro girl Nancy and her increase during her natural life; and if my son-in-law William Neal have any demand against my estate it may be accounted for in his legacy and not come at any other part of my estate for satisfaction.
All of the above legacies are given in addition to what I have already given my said children.
Item. I give to my granddaughter Mary Neal one small trunk.
Item. My desire is that after the death of my daughter Ann Neal the Negro girl Nancy and her increase be equally divided among my four grandchildren, viz. Joel, John, Mary, and Elizabeth Neal.
Item. I give to my son James Chappell one Negro man named Hampton, he paying his brother John Chappell £30 current money.
Item. I give my stock of all kinds with all my other estate not heretofore mentioned to be equally divided between my sons John and James Chappell.
Lastly. I do constitute my loving sons John and James Chappell executors.
Sarah (x) Crawley
Witness:
John Ford
John Ford Jr.
Besides John, Sarah & Robert Chappell's children were Robert Jr., Sarah, Ann, Mary & James.
And this is where it gets fuzzy for me. Were Robert Chappell Sr.'s parents Thomas Chappell Jr. & Elizabeth Jones? Are these the same two individuals brought to the Colonies by Anthony Wyatt, or was Thomas Jr. born in Virginia? Did this Elizabeth Jones Chappell later marry Thomas Taylor? Also, was Thomas a Jr? And were his parents Thomas Chappell & Mary Sarah Banister, d/o of John Banister and Elizabeth Bolling? Those are some of the questions I wish to which I'd like to find answers this year.
Happy Hunting!

Happy New Year, Chappell researchers! First off, I'd like to encourage everyone to post their Chappell lines and, especially, your brick walls, and to share any interesting research info you might have come across in the last year. We have some new list members who would probably enjoy finding connections to their own lines with ours.
Secondly, as List Administrator, I receive all the e-mails that bounce from the list, for whatever reason. Occasionally I'll get a post to the list from someone who does not subscribe to the list. My usual method is to read the post and, if it is a legitimate Chappell query, redirect the post to the list and drop the submitter a note with instructions on how to subscribe to the list. However, since the new year I've been receive a LOT of posts that have tried to make it to the list from folks who aren't subscribed. So many, in fact, that I've decided to make this post to the list in hopes of reaching them, instead of trying to find each individual. My theory is that we have some new Chappell researchers who are utilizing the Archives to the list, and maybe some of our older list members have changed e-mail addresses and have not unsubscribed their old address and subscribed the new one.
For whatever reason, these posts aren't reaching the mailing list, and we'd love to have you aboard. It's very easy to subscribe. To get each e-mail posted to the list as a separate mailing, send an e-mail to CHAPPELL-L-request(a)rootsweb.com. The subject of your message should be the word subscribe, and the body of your message should be the word subscribe. To receive several posts in one mailing in Digest form, send an e-mail to CHAPPELL-D-request(a)rootsweb.com and have the subject and body be the word subscribe. Do not put any other words besides the word subscribe, or the automated system will not recognize your request and will not subscribe you.
If you were successful in subscribing to the list you will receive a welcome message with our rules and regs.
If you should have any problems getting yourself subscribed, e-mail me at the address below and we'll get you fixed up.
Happy Hunting!

Thanks Pat for that information. All of this will help narrow down our search for George Henry.. and figure out how he fits in with all of these Chappells from the New York area.
It looks like it's time to ask the family more questions and share all this information to see if any of it rings a bell about the other members of the family.

This may or may not help but I have Chappells living in Manchester and Farmington Ontario Co. NY in the early 1800s. James Chappell and his family or at least most of them went with him via the Erie canal to Lake Erieto then to Cleveland area and then into Michigan settleing for a while in Allagan MI. They were later in Lyons Ohio and a settlement to the north of there that went from Ohio to Michigan and back during some border disputes.
James had a son William who lived in Manchester and stayed there or in the area. He had a son George Henry who would have been born about 18869. I think the two Geoge Henrys are most likely linked but I can't help with that as it is one of my hang ups too.

William Turner Chappell (b. August 22, 1810 at Avon, Livingston Co, NY) was the son of Enos and Olive (Miller) Chappell formerly of Berkshire Co, MA.
William T. Chappell married Julia Ann Ransom (b July 29, 1818, at Claridon, Geauga Co, OH) at Avon Livingston Co., N.Y. on Nov 27, 1845.
Their 6th child was Charles Henry, b. April 24, 1857, at Avon, N.Y.; he never married.
I don't have any info on a George Henry Chappell bc 1840, BUT there was a Henry Chappell age 13 (bc 1837) born in NY on the 1850 Avon census living in William T. Chappell's household.
I don't know who this Henry Chappell was. It is very possible that he was a nephew. One of Julia Ransom Chappell's neices (Julia Ferris) was also living with them.
I wish I could help but I have not researched the extended Chappell/e families.
My connection is through the Ransom family.
Good Luck,
Sandi
