It's summertime for those of us in the northern hemisphere, and for many, summer means vacations. And lots of time, vacations mean e-mails piling up in inboxes, and automated message replies to e-mails from computers at work, etc. Unfortunately, full inboxes and automated messages also end up in your being unsubscribed from your Rootsweb mailing lists. This week's Rootsweb Review has some great hints and tips for those of you going on vacation so you'll still be subscribed to your mailing lists when you return. (By the way, the Rootsweb Review is a free weekly e-mail you can subscribe to. Just go to http://newsletters.rootsweb.com/ and follow the directions to subscribe.)
Cheers!

RootsWeb Mailing Lists -- Gone Fishing?
"Summertime and the livin' is easy" is how the familiar song from "Porgy
and Bess" goes. For RootsWeb users in the Northern Hemisphere, summer is
nearly here and that often brings with it vacations (holidays), long
weekend fishing trips, beach house visits or trips to the cabin in the
mountains. All of which means time away from genealogical research, time
away from your computer and your e-mail. What should you do when you are
going to be away temporarily from your RootsWeb mailing lists?
Depending upon the length of time you will be away, the capacity of your
mailbox, and the activity level of the lists to which you subscribe; you
may choose either to remain subscribed to the lists and catch up on your
mail when you return or unsubscribe (especially from the busiest high-
volume lists) and re-subscribe when you get home. RootsWeb list software
does not have a temporary "NO-MAIL" setting. However, unsubscribing and
re-subscribing is easy and will accomplish the purpose.
If you choose to unsubscribe from all, or just some, RootsWeb mailing
lists during your vacation, first check Password Central to verify to
which lists you are subscribed.
http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/
Once you obtain a list of your subscribed lists, address a new e-mail
message to the list "request" addresses for the lists from which you
wish to unsub. The "request" address is used to send your command or
instructions that can either unsubscribe or subscribe you from a list.
The format for addressing a message to the request address is:
LISTNAME-L-request(a)rootsweb.com
--if you are subscribed in mail mode (receiving every individual message
list members send to the list) or
LISTNAME-D-request(a)rootsweb.com
--if you are subscribed in digest mode (receiving list messages lumped
together in digest format).
Replace the generic word LISTNAME above with the actual name of the
list. For instance, if you wish to unsubscribe from the SMITH surname
list and you are subscribed in mail mode, send your request to:
SMITH-L-request(a)rootsweb.com or SMITH-D-request(a)rootsweb.com to
unsubscribe from the digests.
Be sure to put the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject and message body of
your e-mail and don't include any other text. If you wish to
unsubscribe from more than one list at the same time, you can show
multiple "request" addresses in the SEND TO box of your e-mail with the
addresses separated by a comma just as you would if you were sending an
e-mail to several individuals at one time.
Keep a record of the mailing list names for the lists from which you
have unsubbed so that you can easily address a new e-mail to the same
list request addresses when you return with the word SUBSCRIBE in the
subject and message body to get back on the lists you temporarily left.
Note: Never send a REPLY e-mail to subscribe to, or unsubscribe from, a
list -- always send a NEW e-mail.
Upon your return from summer fun, you can browse the archives of your
mailing lists to catch up on the messages you missed. Start here:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/
Type in the name of the list you wish to browse and then select the
month and year to view an outline of the messages you wish to read.
Next, click to view any or all individual messages.
So, if the fish are biting this summer or the seashore looks inviting,
leave the laptop at home and don't worry about the "the big one" getting
away because you are not home to view responses to your genealogical
research queries. You can catch up with mailing list messages when you
return.
Recently, I found my Thomas family in South Carolina were kin to the
Chappell, and also found the Will Abstract for Anderson Co., SC for JESSE CHAPPELL,
whose wife was Martha Baldwin Chappell. The Will Abstract gives all the
pertinent information, naming all Heirs or children. One was Robert Chappell. I do
not have the Abstract before me right now. I have placed all the information
on Genforum pages under Chappell. The reason for placing it there is that it
is Free and remains there for folks to use. I gave all citations that one may
be comfortable is using it. As most of you already know, Genforum site is:
http://genforum.genealogy.com
Another place that you can find the story of the Chappell family is in
"History of Halifax County, VA" by Wirt Johnson Carrington (1924); Appeals Press,
Inc., Richmond, VA. Also in the renowned and recognized genealogists, John
Bennett Boddie's 23 volumes of books entitled "Historical Southern Families."
His work is cited all through all the volumes. He gives the genealogy of the
early Chappell family in Virginia that migrated from VA down to NC, SC, GA and
on into Mississippi. These volumes are in most fairly larger libraries because
of their recognized value of his research both in VA and England libraries to
get the background of these families.
In addition to these 23 volumes (by memory), he has two volumes on "Southside
Virginia Families" and another book "Virginia Historical Genealogies." I
believe these will help anyone whose Chappells are in the South. Does not cover
New England.
Hopes this helps someone.

Hi Kim,
They were in Daviess and Hancock Counties in Kentucky as far as I
know. Robert Woodin and Harriett Bevins Chappell died and are buried
in Utility Twp, Hancock Co., KY, as are William and Rilla Chappell
Scifres.

Hi Charles,
That's fine by me. What is the website url? I have alot more Chappell info if
you are interested in it. I have a website as well, but haven't updated the
Chappells yet. I do have a rundown on it but haven't updated it since I discovered
more information. I am currently coding a page on the Descendents of Robert Chappell
as well as other of my ancestral surnames.

Your theory on the Chappell line in Alabama could be correct. Many of Mary
Margaret's siblings moved to Texas but they stayed for a few years in Alabama and
Mississippi before moving on to Texas as did the descendents of Mary Margaret and
Michael Ashford. There was a town founded in Washington Co. TX called Chappell Hill
by one of the descendents.
I did a little looking and Polly Stubblefield supposedly married an Ed Chappell,
though this is open to speculation and not necessarily backed up by facts
Of Mary's male siblings...
1. Robert Wooding Chappell died in Texas He had three sons who's spouses I have no
names for: James G. Chappell; Nimrod Chappell and George Chappell
2. Humphrey Chappell also died in Texas in Chappell Hill. He had four sons three of
whom I don't know about spouses: William Chappell; Alfred Wooden Chappell and Samuel
Hunter Chappell-I do know that Alfred Wooden and Samuel Hunter were in Tuscaloosa
Co. AL
3. James W. Chappell went to Kentucky and had girls
4. William Chappell was married in Wilson Co. TN to Elizabeth Redding. I have not
found a list of their children as of yet nor where or when William died.
Mary's one sister Patsey married in Wilson Co. TN as well so it appears there is a
strong family connection there.

Do you know where the elder CHAPPELL family members were located in about 1840?
I am searching for an Unknown Chappell male that married "Polly" STUBBLEFIELD b: 1819 AL and had one son : Edwin Chappell, listed in his maternal grandmother NANCY STUBBLEFIELD'S household in the 1860 census Napa Co., CA and in consecutive census after that.
We have no information about what happened to Polly & her Chappell husband.
Any ideas or suggestions are welcome

His name was Wilbur, not William as I originally thought.
His parents were George H. Chappell and Lucinda M and his siblings were Warren and Theron.
Greetings,
I am searching for info on Thomas & Helen R. Chappell in Halifax Co VA abt.
1860.
Thomas & Helen R. were the children of Robert Chappell, Jr.
===================================================
Robert Chappell, Sr., died in Halifax County, VA in Feb of 1829.
Will Book # 15, on page 128
In the inventory of his possessions listed under Slaves was "woman Mary &
child Peter."
Robert Chappell, Sr., had a son, Robert Chappell, Jr.
In 1859, Robert Chappell, Jr., died. In Will book 26, page 463.
Robert Chappell, Jr., willed to his daughter Helen R. Chappell
five slaves: "Peter, George, Hannah, Elvira and Mary."
In the 1860 Census, Helen R. Chappell was living with her brother Thomas
Chappell.
Thomas was listed as having $4000 in real estate, and $19,000 in personal
property.
In the 1860 Slave Schedules, Helen R. Chappell is not listed, so, someone
else was claiming the slaves her father willed to her. I figure her brother
Thomas.
There were two Thomas Chappell listed, one with 22 slaves, the other with 18
slaves.
Either Thomas will do.
I assume, Peter was still a slave in 1860, held by the above Thomas and his
sister Helen R. Chappell.
In 1860, Thomas and his sister, Helen R. Chappell were living within 10 miles
of Joel Younger. Joel Younger held Allie, the wife of Peter, in slavery.
Thomas and Helen R. Chappell had siblings named:
1.Octivia,
2. Janetta, m. Edwin S. Hart in 1836, and
3. Orra, m. John L. Tucker in 1836.
I am looking for any additional info on Thomas and Helen R. Chappell, hoping
for more information on my ancestors, Peter ( when freed he used the Chappell
surname) and his mother, Mary.
Thanks in advance,
Larry

Hi Stacey,
Yes, I'm descended from this line. The Robert Wooding and Mary Tittle
Chappell you list are my ggg-grandparents. I'm descended from their
son, Robert Woodin? Chappell, b. 1812, and his wife, Harriett Blevins,
who raised their family in Kentucky. Their daughter, Rillar Chappell,
married William Chandler Scifres. I have a photo of Rillar when she was
in her 80's. Their daughter, Anna Permelia Scifres, married John Raymond
Griffin and their daughter, Virginia Myrl Griffin married Robert A. D.
Fawcett and had my mother.

Hi Stacey,
My line, too, goes through James Chappell and Martha Wooding, and through the Ashfords. Have you searched our mailing list archives? There's a ton of great stuff there. To search by keyword, go to http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=CHAPPELL or to browse the threaded archives go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/CHAPPELL
If you'd like to correspond about our shared Woodings and Ashfords (and, in my case, Dollars) feel free to e-mail me!

Stacy,
This is a "stab in the dark".
I have a STUBBLEFIELD family unit that has a Polly Stubblefield b: 1819 AL m: CHAPPELL [various spellings] The only information that I have is that their son Edwin Chappell b: c. 1840, was listed in his maternal grandmother, NANCY STUBBLEFIELD'S household in 1860 Napa CA census, and continues to be listed in the next few census with his Stubblefield family. I have no information about where Polly married CHAPPELL, nor what happened to Edwin's parents.
The stretch is :
[Your] Mary Margaret "Polly" Chappell-Ashford is having her children:
i. William Ashford b: 18 Sep1806 Wilson Co. TN through 1817; then
vii.Margaret B. "Peggie" Ashford b: 4 Feb 1819 AL
This put Mary Margaret "Polly" Chappell- Asford family in Alabama at the same time that "our" Stubblefield family was in Alabama and then "our" Stubblefield family unit moved to Wilson County TN by 1840.
So it may be possible that the Unknown Chappell father of "our" Edwin Chappell was a nephew of Mary Margaret "Polly" Chappell-Ashford and was in Alabama in about 1840 to meet and marry "our" Polly" Stubblefield????? And perhaps the reason that "our" Stubblefield's moved 1840ish to Wilson County TN., was because of the Chappell ties there??
Anyway, any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

PS

Hello Chappell List!
As you may or may not be aware, our Chappell Mailing List receives "gatewayed" messages from the Chappell surname message board at Rootsweb. This is a wonderful way for even more Chappell info to be shared with other researchers, and I commend Linda on doing such a wonderful job with the message board.
Each message that comes to the mailing list from the message board is clearly marked at the beginning, and contains a link back to that particular posted message. I'd like to remind everyone that most messages gatewayed to us from the message board are from folks who, for whatever reason, are not subscribed to the mailing list. They may be new to genealogy and not aware of the mailing lists, they may not have daily or even weekly access to a computer, or any number of reasons. So when you respond to their queries or wish to ask questions, Rootsweb offers these suggestions:
"When a gatewayed board message wings its way onto a mailing list, list
subscribers are alerted to the fact that the message originated on the
board and a link is provided so that the reader can click on it to
access the message on the board. Replies can then be made directly on
the board where you are certain to see them and where you can be
notified that a reply awaits.
Replies to gatewayed messages that are posted on the board allow both
the query and the response to be correctly "threaded" (linked together)
and "archived" on the board so that they may benefit others with the
same question who find the posts in the future.
If the shoe is on the other foot and you are a mailing list subscriber
and wish to reply to a post copied over from the board to the list via
the gateway, be sure to click on the link in the message or paste the
URL (address) into your browser window and reply on the board. If this
is not possible for any reason, remember that the board poster is most
likely not subscribed to the list and you will need to reply to the
e-mail address provided in the gatewayed post. However, it is far
preferable for replies to be made directly on the board. By doing so, a
permanent record of the query and the replies can be preserved for
future researchers.
Although mailing lists and message boards have been with us for years,
the gateway between boards and lists represents a newer approach -- the
next generation of communication for genealogists. Let your query take
flight and soar to the widest audience possible, using the combined
list/board resources to their fullest advantage."

My grandmother Melvina Chappell was taken to the Paris hospital with appendicitus. She did not survive the surgery. Can someone look up and try to see where she is buried or if she is listed anywhere. I have been unable to locate any information on her. She has other names of Earland, Huling, and Farris. She died in 1928 or the last part of 1927. She was about 33 years old. She was married to William Chappell at Havana Arkansas July 23, 1923.

Researching the above whose wife, Ella, may have married Oramel/Orimel Brockway between 1920-1930. Did William die or did they divorce? William doesn't appear on the 1930 Norwich, CT census. An Ella appears on the 1930 census with Brockway, as his wife in Norwich.
