I seek the names of the spouse and/or children of Robert Chappell, who was born September 25, 1752 in Albemarle Parish, Surry Co, Va., son of James Chappell and Elizabeth Scott Chappell. He and family travelled first to Mecklenberg Co., Va.(where he is alleged to have died), and from where his family moved on with his brother, John andfamily to Granville County, North Carolina and possibly thereafter to Hancock County, Georgia.
My e mail address has been changed to Kimee47(a)aol.com.
I am looking for proof of the parents of my Josiah Washington BROWN, B. C
1800 in Knox Co., TN. Mar to (1) Martha WEAR. in 1841. They had 9 children:
1. Polly 1843-1862 (all births are in McMinn County, TN.
2. Mary Cordelia 1844, Mar in 1864 to "Dock: BROCK
3. Winfield Scott B 1847
4.William Charles 31 Dec. 1849, Mar 12 Jul 1867 to Susan R. WRIGHT
5. Mary Margaret B. 1854
6. Robert Duston B 1854, D 1934, Mar to Josephine Leanna LEDBETTER
7. Hugh L., B 1856

Martha died 18 Dec. 1860. In 1862, Josiah married Nancy Kinner COFFEE.
They had three children:
1&2. Twins, Nancy Kinner and Josiah Washington B. 28 Oct 1861. Nancy married
Carroll Long HUTSELL 8 Sep 1881 in Athens, TN., and Died 10 Jun 1916. Josiah
married Sofia ERICKSON
3. Matilda L B 1865, Mar to Williams BANKS.
I have been told that Josiah parents were James BROWN and Martha CHAPPELL,
but with no proof. There is a marriage between a James BROWN and Martha
CHAPPELL 23 Aug 1810 in Obion Co., TN. THey had a son George Washington BROWN B. 27
Mar 1820, who married 23 May 1848.
I cannot prove these are the same people despite the same names, and
approximate dates. Does anyone have either or both of these families in their files?
My Josiah had large land holdings on the Hiawasee River in McMinn Co., TN.
according to legal papers in the courthouse.
Thanks for any help or suggestions. Earlene Hutsell,,, eroch25(a)aol.com

I have been researching the families from south of the James river after 1650 in what eventually became Prince George County in 1703 and if they may have moved down into Granville/Bute because we found Blackards in both places. I think that I can make a case that the following group of settlers moved down out of Charles City County/Prince George County Virginia through Dinwiddie/Brunswick/Lunenburg and into Granville/Bute NC. I would love to share information or ideas and appreciate any clues regarding the Blackard family before 1756.
-Andy Blackard
smogman(a)mindspring.com
Blackard. John Blackard was first recorded on a 1650 headrights patent to Charles Sparrow and Richard Tye on the south bank of the James River in the part of Charles City County, Virginia that later became Prince George County. The ship "Perfect" was named on the patent. However, certain of the others on the list were headrights that were
recorded on earlier headrights and therefore were purchased from others. Later a Charles Blancherd (probably Blackard) was recorded in the same vicinity in Prince George in 1714 and 1721 who may be John Blackard's grandson as well as the father of Charles Blackard who appears in Edgecombe, Granville and Bute Counties, North Carolina in 1755 from Virginia.
Chappell. Immigrant Thomas Chapel was on the same 1650 headrights patent to Sparrow & Tye. He died in Charles City, Virginia in 1655. Earlier in 1635 he came to Virginia on the America Captained by Mr. Barker who formed Merchant's Hope, Charles City (Prince George) Virginia. Thomas Chappell was born in Granville NC 23 Jan 1761 great-great grandson of immigrant Thomas Chappell of Charles City VA.
Lett. Around the time John Blackard was recorded in Charles City Virginia, the Charles City County Court Orders contains approximately 40 entries for what appears to have been a father and son both named John Lett. John Lett was recorded in Prince George in 1714. He starts being recorded in both Brunswick VA and Edgecombe NC in 1747-1756. He was recorded on the same 1755 Edgecombe survey as Charles Blackard. Then in 1762 Charles Blackard
witnessed the will of John Lett in Granville NC indicating that they were friends.
Peebles. Immigrant David Peebles arrived in Charles City (Prince George), Va in 1649 and lived near Charles Sparrow according to deeds. Given the Blackards apparent connection with the war, John Blackard may have arrived at the same time. He fought for the loyalist cause in the English Civil War and fled execution by Cromwell. His son William
Peebles obtained land near Sparrows & Tye on Birchen Swamp in 1673. William's son Thomas was born in Prince George in 1731 and was recorded in Bute County, NC in 1770. He had a son named Nathaniel Peebles, however; and older Nathaniel Peebles was also recorded in Bute NC in 1769. A Thomas and a Nathaniel Peebles files their wills
in Bute in 1775.
Eaton. The William Eaton who formed the Granville Militia in 1754 was born in Prince George County, Virginia and married there in 1717. He is recorded again in Prince George on a 1723 deed. He was recorded in the 1750 Granville tax lists and recorded there continuously thereafter in Granville and Bute until his 1771 will in Bute.
Pettypool. John Pettypool was born in Prince George in 1723/5 son of Seth and father of the Seth Pettypool who migrated to NC. Seth was recorded in Lunenburg in 1747 and then in Granville NC in 1762, 1764 and 1766.
Bobbitt. Lewis Bobbitt was grandson of Welsh immigrant William Bobbitt who died in Charles City (Prince George) in 1703. His father William L. Bobbitt was born in 1675 in Hopewell, Charles City (Prince George), VA and died in 1738 in Prince George Co., VA. Lewis bobbit was born in
1703 in Charles City (Prince George) and died in 1796 in Granville or Warren Co., NC. Lewis Bobbitt was married in 1728 in Dinwiddie VA and was first recorded in Bute NC in 1764.
House. Thomas House Sr. was recorded on land deeds adjoining the property of Charles Blancherd in Prince George County VA in 1714 and 1721. The will of Thomas House Jr. was filed in Brunswick Co VA in 1734 and witnessed by John Taylor Duke. In 1753 the daughter of Thomas House Sr. married in Dinwiddie Co VA. A younger Thomas House was
recorded in Bute NC in 1765 and then in 1769 in the Baptist Meeting House neighborhood where Charles Blackard lived. Then he was on the 1778 Bute tax list with Charles Blackard II.
Bartholomew. Charles Bartholomew witnessed a Charles City Va deed in 1687. He married the widow of Francis Poythress in Charles City in 1694. Charles Bartholomew and Sir Francis Poythress (Jr?) were named on the 1704 Quit Rent Rolls of Prince George County. Than a younger
Charles Bartholomew was found on the 1764 Granville NC tax list and then in Bute NC in 1770 on deeds near Thomas House, William Duke, and Charles Blackard.
Duke. According to one source Henry Duke of James City County, Virginia died in Prince George in 1718. According to another source he was born about 1673 in Martin Brandon Parish, Charles City County, VA, and died there in January 1717/18 after it had become Prince George County. Martins Brandon is where Charles Blancherd was recorded in
1714 and 1721. His son William Duke was born in 1701 in Prince George (Brunswick) and died in 1773 in Bute(Warren) County, NC. John, Joseph, William Duke Sr & Jr. were all recorded on the 1749 Granville tax list. William Duke was later recorded on a 1770 Bute NC deed for Charles Bartholomew to Thomas House.

I am researching a name that was handed down to me and am not sure if my information is correct. I have been researching my grandmothers line (Sallie Culp Randel). The only information I have on her is that her mother (Molly Chappel Culp) was married to Robert Hubert Culp. I don't know if this is the same line or not that you are researching.
I have a dilemma> I have two CHAPPELL-BROWN marriages in approximately the
same time frame, both in Tennessee, but in opposite sides of the state. The
first names of the couple are the same..... Martha CHAPPELL and James BROWN
Mine were born in Knox County C 1800, the others around Nashville 1810-1820.
I just ran across this other couple, and am amazed by the similarities. I
have proved my family up to the dates on this couple who were the parents of my
Josiah Washington BROWN, B. 1821 in Knox County, but have not proven anything
about the other couple. Now there is a Joseph Washington BROWN also in the
area with whom my Josiah is often confused, but this other James marrying a
Martha CHAPPELL, with roughly the same dates has me really confused.
It's taken my many many years to find "my" James and Martha, and now I'm
confronted with this other family. Does anyone have any info to sort these two
families out or any input on this west Tennessee couple, or even my James and
Martha CHAPPELL BROWN?
Any input on either or both of these families would be most gratefully
appreciated. Thanks you. Earlene Hutsell eroch25(a)aol.com

Hello Margaret,
My great grandmother Edith E. Chappell was born 10 April 1877 in Westerly, Washington County, Rhode Island, She had siblings named Amelia H., Sarah H. & Winfield Scott Jr. (he never married and is buried with my great grandparents). Edith married Crawford Alexander Partelo on 20 October 1901 in North Stonington, New London County, Connecticut.
Edith's father is 2nd Lt. Winfield Scott Chappell born 1842 in South Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island. He has siblings named Alsada S. (half sister), Sarah H., Hannah S., Rodayann, Matthew Napolean & Lucinda H. Winfield married Mary Townsend Sherman circa 1866.
Winfield's father is Matthew Chappell born circa 1799 in Rhode Island. He is the furthest back I have gotten so I have no siblings for him as yet. He married Sarah Weeden Hull.
The only advice I could give I guess would be to contact the Connecticut State Library. They have the Barbour Collection which is vital statistics mostly before 1850 so if Edwin's birth was recorded it should be there. Also it should give the names of his parents. The web address for the library is http://www.cslib.org/handg.htm
I hope you have success at finding Edwin's father.
Barbara
I'm sorry I can't help you more. Most of my Chappell's thus far seem to be in Rhode Island and not Connecticut.

Back in the 1980s, I copied a booklet from the Virginia State Library Archives entitled "History of Amelia County". It's been a while since I read my copy & when I started reading it again the other day, I decided to transcribe it at the same time to share with others.
I think it's very interesting, covers a great variety of topics including Paineville, the early post office, tobacco raising & selling, mica mines, overseers, slavery, Infidel Club, Masonic lodge, Amelia County Marriages, Amelia County Court House, early life in Amelia County, early churches in Amelia County, Vaughan Family, brandy making, whiskey making, ordinaries, early doctors, Amelia Sulphur Springs, Mills, early Colonial church in Virginia, Old Paineville Church, early land grants, marriages, etc.
Surnames mentioned include: Allen, Anderson, Archer, Booker, Chappell, Clement, Ford, Foster, Gauldin, Jeter, Johnson, Jones, Orange, Perrin, Randolph, Seay, Tabb, Vaughan, Whitworth, Williams, Wingo, Wood, etc.
There are tons of places and names mentioned in this relatively small booklet.
I have put this transcription on my rootsweb web site -- the link is available from the General Research Pages or Site News & Updates links found on the main page:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.html
As always, I hope others find it as interesting as I did & that it helps someone w/ their research! Corrections & Comments are welcome -- just sign the guestbook on the site. If you have research or documents you would like to share relating to topics or families on the site, please let me know.

My name is Kem Chappell Barlow. I am researching both the Chappell family and also the Young family. I have a lot of information about my Chappell ancestors, but not much about my Young ancestors. I was hoping that someone in the Chappell family might have done some research into the Young line. The Young I am looking for is Joseph Calvin Young. He was born in 03/1818 in SC. He married Rachel Matilda Davis in GA in 1851. They had several children while in GA. The Young family moved to Henderson County, TX ca 1875. It was there that Joseph Calvin Young's son, John Dee Young, married Leona Scroggins Young. Their daughter (my grandmother) was Alice Etha Young, born in Athens in 1893. Alice Etha Young married Charles Britton Chappell ca 1917 in Henderson County, TX. They had 2 sons, Glynn Riley Chappell and my father, Jeter Dee Chappell. If anyone has any information, please contact me. I am also looking for information re James Scroggins, Leona Scroggins Young's f!
ather. All I know about him is that he was born in GA in 1832, married Mollie Scroggins in AL, and moved to Henderson County, TX ca 1875 as well.
Thank you!
