I just bought a copy of the CHappell/Dickie families a few years ago. It was
reprinted again. I will try to find the address of whom it was that I bought
my copy from and put a posting here if I can find it again.

The Swem library at William and Mary has 2 copies...one from 1895, the other 1900. When I lived there, they let me check out the OLDER one for a few months! Go figure!
There are questions as to the reliability of this book, though, so try to document (if you can) what you find there.

The book you are looking for is by Phillip Chappell, A Genealogical History of the Chappell, Dickie and Other Kindred Families. It was published in 1900 and has long been out of print but there are copies floating around out there. If you are near a library which does inter-library loan, they can borrow a copy for you. Otherwise, you are going to have to do some writing to locate one and travel to use it. I understand there are some photostat copies around but don't know where to get one.

Greetings,
I am seeking info on the black Arthur Irby (36y), wife Mary, and their next
door neighbor George Brown & his wife Lizzie. They were found in the 1920
Census for West Virginia, Raleigh Co, Coal City township, Hot Coal Precinct.
I suspect the above Arthur is the same Arthur who married Pattie Chappell in
1904 in Halifax Co VA. In the 1910 Census Arthur (26Y) and Pattie were
listed with their 3 children in Halifax Co Virginia.
The name of the mother of Arthur was Sallie Brown. When Arthur married
Pattie in 1904 he used the Surname Brown, and listed his mother as Sallie. I
found Arthur (14Y) in the 1900 census for VA. living in the household of
Sallie Brown, with his siblings.
Arthur left (spelled abandoned) Pattie and his children in VA, and went alone
to W.Va.
I suspect that Arthur Irby and his next door neighbor George Brown in 1920
are related to each other.
Thanks for your time,
Larry
Greetings,
I am an Afro-American.
My G-Grand parents were Peter and Allie/Alice Chappell of Halifax Co. Va.
Christopher Carlton a white slave holder died in 1824 (probably in King +
Queen County) Va. In his will Christopher willed to his daughter Polly
Carlton “one Negro Esther and her future increase”.
Dolly died July 7, 1858 without husband, or issue.
In Jan of 1859 the increase of "one Negro Esther", the slave willed to
Polly Carlton were bought by Joel Younger from the Pollys surviving siblings
and the dead siblings children for $1,500 dollars. "One negro Esther" was
mentioned in the papers only to establish that Joel was purchasing her
increase (I am assuming that Esther was then dead.).
The sum of $1,500, bought my g-grand mother Allie and her children, Willis,
Daniel (my grandfather ), Eppa, George, and Henry.
Joel Younger had in fact had posession of Allie before he officially bought
her in 1859, because I found in "Slave Birth Records", Allie giving birth to
three of her children, in 1853, 1855, and 1858, with the owner listed as Joel
Younger.
In the 1870 Census for Halifax Co Va, Peter aged 40y and Allie aged 35 were
found with the following children: Willis 20y. George, 15y, Henry 13y,
Peter 12y, Doctor 10y, Davis 9y, Bell 7y, Willy Ann 5y, Edward 3y, and
Horace 6mo.
Daniel my gfather using the surname Younger, was living nearby with his wife
Sue.
In 1880 I again find Peter 50y, and Allie/Alice 50 y, with children Bell
18y, Willie 16, Doctor 20, Lee (Peter) 22y, Henry 23y, Eppy 24y, Edward
12y,
Horace (Braxton) 11y, Milly 7y, and Corer 4y.
Other than the births of children to Allie in 1853, 1855 and 1858, and the
sale of she and her children, I found no other records whatsoever of Peter
or Allie before 1859, or after 1900 .
I don't know yet where Peter the hubby of Allie came from, or how they wound
up with the name Chappell. Perhaps Joel Younger, who held 35 slaves in 1860,
bought Peter from a Chappell family.

Greetings,
A New Year begins, -- time to re-post.
I have a book sent to me as a gift by a friend who found it while passing
through Halifax County Va.
The book is titled:
"The History of the Education of Black Citizens in Halifax County: 1866-1969
."
The book was written by W. C. Edwards (W. C. Edwards, served as
Principal of the school from 1934 to 1966), NOTE: I have the info from his
obit.
Preston M. Royster, and Lazarus Bates, (Lazarus followed W. C. Edwards as
Principal).
The book was published in 1979 by Bannister Press, Springfield, VA.
It was purchased at:
South Boston Historical Museum,
801 N. Main Street, South Boston, Va. 24592
Tel--- (434) 572-9200.
The book is soft cover, cost abt $6, + shipping, and contains 261 pages,
I have no connection with this book---- you pays your money, and you takes
your chances. I am giving this info only because someone might be able to use
it.
The book contains some history on black education in Halifax Co. Va.
Chapter 2 in the book gives some history on the earliest black schools,
such as:
1. The Antrim Church and Mission School,
2. McKinley Institute
3. Williams Normal and Industrial Institute, aka Williams Normal and
previously known as the South Boston (VA) Institute.
4. Mizpath Elementary School.
5. The School In The Backyard.
--------
Chapter 4 mentions
1. Booker T. Washington High School 1930-1948, serving only South Boston Va.
later merged with Halifax Training School. The names of the five
Principals of Booker T. are given.
2. Halifax Training School 1920-1956, The names of the five principals are
given.
The name was changed in 1956 to Mary M. Bethune High School 1956-1969
======
There are names in the book of graduates from the all black
"Halifax Training School," later renamed
"Mary M. Bethune High School."
The years for which graduates names are printed are, 1936 through 1969.
In chapter 8 of the book are "SUCCESS STORIES," giving some history of
graduates after they left the Halifax Schools.
This book also gave names of the persons on the teaching staff,
information on the years they taught, types of certificate or degree
they held, the College/University they attended, subjects they were
authorized to teach, taught, and period of employment.
I will do lookups of Graduates, and Staff.
In order to avoid clogging up the list for those not interested,
I will not answer requests posted to this list.
