Saw your posting on the Chapple mailing list - would be curious what
parts of England your Chapples are from? Mine are from Dorset -
primarily Cranborne, Horton, Three Cross area. My great grandfather
Albert Francis Chapple (then spelled Chappell) married Gertrude Frances
Joy and came to Canada in the early 1900's. His parents were Edmund
Chapple (1852-1929) and Mary Ann Lo(a)der (1853 c 1919). Edmund's
parents were Moses Chapple (born March 23, 1823) and Hannah Freeborne.
Moses' parents John Chapple born 1790 and Ann Loader. John was the son
of Robert Chapple (born c 1767) and Lucy Thorn (born c 1764).
that's as far as I go. Any familiar sounding names?
Looking forward to hearing from any and all lost cousins.

In going through some work that was sent to me on the Chappell line, I found what looks to be the source of much confusion. With several men named James and several named William, I think they are being confused with one another. I have been sent so many different names of wives for these men I knew there had to be some reasonable explanation. So, to share what another researcher sent me :
Abraham Chappell and Ann Drake had several children:
1. (my page is missing) sorry
2. Robert who married Elizabeth SIMS
3. Jesse who married Martha FINCH
4. William who married Nancy GOODING, 2) Ruth. Headington QUICK
5. Polly who married Henry GODSEY
6. James who married Nancy FOWLER VADEN
*Confusion seems to be with 4) William having sons named James, Robert, and I believe another William (to be verified soon) and William's brother 6) James having sons named James, William, Robert about the same time.
++++returning to William's son, James. He married Rebecca NORTHCUTT and Rachel KEY. Further confusion came when it turns out this James had a son named William who WAS born in Louisville. I had doubted that birth location but since it isn't MY William, I no longer doubt this man was born there. He was also born about the time of my William (him/1808 and mine/ 1802). This William (not mine) was married to Cassandra MALLOTT and Mary willis WEST. I feel much better now.Information was going in too many directions by too many good folks to NOT be true in some respect. I am grateful to barnold(a)coxnc.rr.com who put it in a form that was easy to see. Now I just have to prove my William should be squeezed in there under William Chappell and Nancy Gooding! Greetings,
I need an experienced person to lookup several persons for the years 1885
through 1900 in the Personal Property Tax book at the Library of Virginia.
The area I am interested in is Halifax County, VA.
I called the LVA and was told that there is a book there containing Personal
Property taxes.
The book is very old, and cannot come apart for copying. Any info from the
book must be hand copied.
I want 12 names looked up for those years (1885 > 1900).

Correction: Try to find out if his grandparents were from Maryland. I just re-read your message and now I see that his parents were born in Michigan, too. I am just curious about how he met and married a woman from Maryland. It was common back then to name a boy after his paternal grandparents and Henry would fit, if that were the case.

One thing that is helpful to know is that the spellings of last names didn't mean anything until the late 1800's. The only way to be sure that we don't have the same ancestry is if we trace back with documents from ourselves and actually locate two completely unrelated branches.
Of course, that takes a lot of work. In my line I have Chapple, Chappel, Chappell, and Chappelle. These spellings range from pre-revolutionary war to present. The links have been proven through birth records, Revolutionary War records, tax information, and the Census throughout the years. The final change in the spelling of the last name happened sometime right before the Civil War, and it was either my great-great grandfather or great-great uncle, his older brother, who did it. They are the only siblings in the whole bunch from their original family with that spelling. It's on their military records and their marriage information with the county. Their father spelled it without the "e" on the end, and his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather spelled it either "Chapple" or "Chappel." You also have to realize that Census takers spelled names the way they thought they should be spelled if they gathered information about a family from neighbors. Spellings just weren't tha!
t important back then.
Since your William was born in Michigan, it would be interesting to know where his parents were from. Since he married a woman from Maryland, he may have met her on a trip to relatives there, such as a funeral or wedding. This was common when it was considered completely wrong to skip out on family gatherings back then, even if you lived across the country. If you can find out who his parents were and where they were from (from the Census, military/pension records, or tax/property records), you might find a connection to my line that way. I located a large amount of information when I located my great-great grandfather's and gr-gr grandmother's pension applications.
Happy hunting! Let me know if you find anything interesting, and I'll do the same for you if I find a link.
Respectfully,
Julia Payne

The problem is that I don't know any ancestors for William Henry Chappell. He appears in the 1900 Census as William Chapple but his descedants are all Chappell but they pronounce it Chapple. He was born March 1870. It also indicates that he and his parents were born in Michigan. They had 1 son in 1900 and 5 more after that census (another child died at birth). He married Martha O'Neil 28 December 1898 in Barton, Allegany County, Maryland. She was b: 6 August 1875 in Barton. Both of her parents came from Ireland. These are my wife's grandparents.

Thank you very much for your reply. Your Chappell may be a cousin of the descendents of Henry Chappell. These ancestors of mine moved to Loudoun Co., Va. in 1790 from Maryland and then spread to Farquier Co., Va. and then the D.C. area (post Civil War and beyond). I would enjoy receiving any information you might have on the ancestors of your William Henry.
With warm regards,
Julia Payne
