Please let me know about this family. The birth years for James are around the time I'm searching for. Could the uncle H. Alton stand for Henry Alton and could you find out if he may have been named after the Chicago Alton RR. The family I'm searching for has a history of working for the RR in many different states.
Patsy-
I have a Scott R. CHAPPELL and Jay B. CHAPPELL, in my line, who both went
West and worked for the S.P.R.R.

I will be emailing you in a minute Jack, but for anyone else looking, I have a picture of this John Niles Sloan's headstone, and it is the most interesting stone I have ever seen.Has a 12x12 or large plaque on it with family bloodline history, etc etc...I was walking that cemetary looking for someone else recently, and came across it. Had no clue who he was or anything, but took a picture of the stone because it was so impressive...now I am glad I did! I can be emailed at funnyfarm1995(a)hotmail.com if anyone else is interested.
Are any of the following names familiar to anyone out there. Very

I haven't done much work lately on my Chapel line, but I had gotten this line
traced back to an Ezekiel Chapel, who was b. 1799 in Connecticut. By 1826,
he was in New York, where his first child was born. He appears in the
following places for the census:

Would be interested to hear from anyone who connects with this line.

In my collection of Chappell's (and other variations)in New York State I have an Elias Chapell b. 1794 said to have been in New London CT and buried in Byron, Genesee Co NY in 1879. Elias's wife Abigail b. 1795 d. 1890 is also buried in Byron, NY. The only 2 children I know of are David b. 1817 and Lovisa b. 1831. Elias was in Byron, Genesee Co., NY on the 1830 census. David's childrens' names are said to have been James, Morris, Amy, Ida, Frank, and Edgar H.
Not entirely true...
The old timers in New London, CT pronounce the name CHAPEL with a long "A"
as in CHAPIN. Tradition says this was done to keep these folks sorted out
from the CHAPPELL line (pronounced with a short "A" as in apple). This
tradition holds true in these times and in some records you will find the
name spelled CHAAPEL. Unfortunately, some of the early record keepers in and
around New London were not as careful in recording the name and you find the
spelling corrupted on both sides. I began recording this line about ten
years ago in hopes of being able to keep them sorted out. My convention is
to spell the descendants of George CHAPPELL and William CHAPEL, exactly as
shown, when their origin is known, regardless of how the corrupted name may
have been located in records.

Didn't many of the Northern Chappells go to Utah....the phone book for
two small towns in southern utah is filled with them...if any are good

can remember the names of the towns, I will repost...does anyone
remember them?

I have New England Chappells in my family tree. They left NY state after the
Civil War and moved to GA. They also have FL connections. The first
Chappell in the colonies was George Chappell b. 1615 Barnstable, Devon, Eng.
He died 1682 in New London CT. We believe the father of George was Alexander
Chappell b. 1583 Barnstable, Devon, Eng. He died in 1621. His wife was
Johann Ellett b. 1587 in Barnstable, Devon, Eng.
Our Chappell name has undergone various changes. Chappell, Chappel, Chapel,
Chaple.....all pronounced with the long a sound. I would be happy to share.

I too have wondered why all the Chappells on the list appear to be from the
south. My George Chappell was born June 6, 1803 in New York, and died May
21, 1875 in Allen County, Ohio. His wife, Cynthia Hayes Chappell, was born
in Essex County, New York, and died December 4, 1866 in Allen County, Ohio.
If anyone can connect me to a New York family, I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks,
Patty Chiles

Since I haven't written anything for quite a while and yet read all the Chappell list, I want to add that our particular family is from Eastern PA and one section off in Cincinnati, OH. However, beginning with Joel in Wales, there must be many more of our family that we haven't found as yet. Any of you knew readers related?

2. Mary Chappell, b 1849 Llanelli, Wales m David Edwards

Are there any Northern CHAPPELL'S on this web site. All I read are below the
Mason-Dixon line. Did not know so many CHAPPELL'S lived in the south. How
about the CHAPPELL'S in New York State are they any around.

I'm here in NYS with New York Chappel/Chapel/Chappell/Chapell's still trying
to find the parents and sibblings of my Rachel Chappel born abt 1767 in CT
who married David Johnson about 1789 probably in CT. David and Rachel may
have been living in Colebrook CT 1794-1805 but that is still unconfirmed but
they were in Avon, Livingston Co., NY by 1808.(In 1808 Avon was known as
Hartford and was in Ontario Co., NY). Any clues as to the parents and
siblings of my Rachel Chappel greatly appreciated !
