Did he have any brothers? My great grandfather was Charles Lewis Chapple. He was from that area from what I understand. He was born in 1900 and died in 1970. At the present time I do not have any other information on him.

Bob - Thanks for writing. Unfortunately I only have the information from the
grave stone. The so called cemetery office has nothing else to tell me. Their
records are poor. I don't even know how this person connects to my family
except that he is probably tied to the name Little or Harvell. And no one
else has writtenback to me about this. Wish I could tell you more. Nancy
Hi Nancy
I don't think this will help you in your search as we are the Chappells
of Rhode
Island. But Iwas struck by the name Robert W. Chappell.
My name is Robert w. (Wendell ) Chappell Born 6/11/1928 in Wakefield RI.
I have never found any relatives in Virginia.
Do you know Robert's Middle name ?
This is almost like seeing your own obit.
Hopeing to hear from you

Lewis E. CHAPPELL was born in Michigan in 1873. His parents were George H. Chappell and Henrietta Chappell. I think he married Huldah Secord in 1899. They had three children that I know of: Clarence Chappell born in 1900, Gladys May Chappell born in 1902, and Elene Chappell born in 1915. They moved from Michigan to Pasco, Franklin County, Washington sometime between 1902 and 1909.
Any information about this family or relatives would be greatly appreciated.
About six months ago I sent to the Waverly Cemetery in Waverly Virginia to
get some information about my ancestors who are buried there. Since then a
wonderful man has taken pictures for me at the cemetery. There are 2 graves
that are for Chappells, but I have no idea the connection to my family. They
are Robert W. Chappell, a sergeant in the US Army during WWII. He was born
5-25-1918 and died 1-15-1960. The other is Myrtle Harrison Chappell I'm
assuming by the dates that she was probably his mother. She was born 8-7-1892
and died 11-31-1983. Do any of you know anything about these people ? They
are buried with my family...surnames Little and Harvell. The Waverly Cemetery
is just outside of Petersburg Va. I'd really appreciate any help that you may
be able to give me with this. Nancy Rubé
Greetings,
My maternal great-grandparents were Peter and Allie/Alice Chappell of Halifax
Co. VA.
Allie/Alice was a slave. I am not sure if Peter was also a slave.
Christopher Carlton a white slave owner died in 1824 in King + Queen County
Va. In his will Christopher willed to his daughter Polly Carlton "one Negro
Esther and her future increase."
A provision in the will was that if Polly died without issue, the slave
Esther and any of her increase willed to Polly by her father, was to go to
Pollys siblings, and the issue of Pollys dead siblings.
Polly died July 7, 1858, without issue.
In Jan of 1859 the increase of "one Negro Esther," listed as
my g-grand mother Allie and her children Willis, Daniel (my grandfather ),
Eppa, George, and Henry, were bought by Joel Younger for the sum of $1,500.
This sum was paid to the surviving siblings of Polly Carlton, and to the
reps. of her dead siblings.
===========================================================
Joel Younger had in fact had possession of Allie before he bought her in
1859, because I found in Slave Birth Records, Allie giving birth to two of
her children, in 1853, and 1855, and the owner was listed as Joel Younger.
In the 1870 Census for Halifax Co, VA, Peter aged 40y and Allie aged 35 were
found with the following children: Willis 20y. George, 15y, Henry 13y, Peter
12y, Doctor 10y, Davis 9y, Bell 7y, Willy Ann 5y, Edward 3y, and Horace 6mo.
In 1870 Daniel my maternal grandfather, son of Peter & Allie, had married
using the surname Younger, and was living with his wife Sue. When Sue
married Daniel Oct 2, 1869, she listed her surname as Stovall.
The parents of Sue were, Primus and Mariah Younger. I suspect that Sue had
been sold to slave owner J. B. Stovall, in the home of whom Daniel and Sue
were married.
In 1880 I again find Peter 50y, and Allie/Alice 50 y, with children Bell 18y,
Willie 16, Doctor 20, Lee (Peter) 22y, Henry 23y, Eppy 24y, Edward 12y,
Horace (Braxton) 11y, Milly 7y, and Corer 4y.
Daniel, my Grandfather and Sue his wife were living elsewhere.
Other than the sale of Allie & children to Joel Younger & the births of
children to Allie in 1853, 1855 and 1858, I found no other records whatsoever
of Peter or Allie before 1859. I found Peter in the PPT records until 1900.
Allie was last seen in the 1880 census
The oldest child of Allie/Alice Chappell was Willis, born about 1850. All the
children named Allie and Peter as their parents, which means Peter was
somewhere near Allie beginning as early as early as 1850.
I don't know where Peter, the hubby of Allie came from considering the
Chappell surname Peter and Allie were using in the 1870 census.
Any help out there?
Larry
Greetings,
I am seeking info on the black Arthur Irby (36y), wife Mary, and their next
door neighbor George Brown & his wife Lizzie. They were found in the 1920
Census for West Virginia, Raleigh Co, Coal City township, Hot Coal Precinct.
I suspect the above Arthur is the same Arthur who married Pattie Chappell in
1904 in Halifax Co VA. In the 1910 Census Arthur (26Y) and Pattie were
listed with their 3 children in Halifax Co Virginia.
The name of the mother of Arthur was Sallie Brown. When Arthur married
Pattie in 1904 he used the Surname Brown, and listed his mother as Sallie. I
found Arthur (14Y) in the 1900 census for VA. living in the household of
Sallie Brown, with his siblings.
Arthur left (abandoned) Pattie and his children in VA, and went alone to
W.Va.
I suspect that Arthur and his next door neighbor George Brown in 1920 are
related to each other.
Were records kept of marriages in West, VA. about 1920? If so, how may I
obtain a copy?
Thanks for your time,
Larry

Hi Sandra,
Thank you so much for e-mailing me, and giving me this
incredible information. As you may know, Carolyn was adopted, and the memories
she has of her mother are vague.
I called her
immediately when I received your email, and she is
real anxious to make a connection. She has many
questions. It took a minute to figure out the bloodline, but I understand now, that your grandmother was one of John Chappells children from his first wife---She is my moms (Carolyns) half sister----Got it!
Here is my email, stephro(a)yahoo.com
Carolyns email is: john.d.ramesy(a)worldnet.att.net
Any information you can share is appreciated. Names,
birth dates, relatives, occupations, whereabouts, stories,
death dates, photos, etc... Thank you so much for taking time to write me, I look
forward to future communications.

I have some of the information you are looking for. My grandmother is the oldest child still living, but her mother Ethel died when she was four. Her father married Elizabeth and raised her and her and her brothers, Elizabeth had 9 more children, Carolyn being the last. E-mail me so we can talk, if you would like for me to see if she can answer any of your questions. I would very much like to talk to you, because you are my cousin, and my grandmother would like to hear about her youngest half sister.

Hi Margie,
I am of the Drury Chappell line also, my g g grandmother was Martha Chappell, I have, spoken w/Vera before. I was doing some research the other night and i ran across a will of Elizabeth (Scott) Chappell of Sussex Co. Va showing a son by the name of Drury Chappell, Elizabeth wife of Samuel Chappell, born between 1680 and 1690. Samuel was born in 1690's I hope, this may be of some help. According to a list of their children that, I found on another board, Drury was one of 13 Children. I printed this list and have other children's names if you, need them.
