Greetings,
I need a lookup in the 1850 and 1860 Halifax County Va. Slave Schedules.
I need to know how many, the sex of, and ages of the slaves held by Adolphus
Chandler.
Thanks in advance,
Larry
Greetings,
For those searching Halifax Co. VA, there is a booklet in the Danville Va.
library which might be of interest.
The title of the booklet is:
"Tombstone Inscriptions
taken from Private Cemeteries
In Halifax County, Virginia
vol. 1
Compiled by Kenneth Harvey Cook.
the date on the booklet is November 1969.
The booklet is 40 pages long, and contains info on about 54 cemeteries.
The cemeteries tend to be small.
In the back of the booklet there was a map on which the numbers of the
cemeteries were marked, so that one could see just about where the cemeteries
were located.
In the booklet, I found about 9 cemeteries not covered in George Calvin
Waldreb IIIs "Halifax Co. (VA) Cemeteries" books.
The genealogy group in the Danville Library is:

Greetings
A nice person, a Mr. Wallace has contacted me and given me info on how
everyone may access on-line the very same information I have been struggling
to post.
Note: these instructions should work for any state, just use the correct
state name.
Here are the instructions and other good info he gave to me, with some
additions from me.

This is how to access the LDS catalog online. By the way, if you are near an
LDS family history center, you can buy for a great sum of $5.00 plus tax a
CD-ROM of the LDS FHLC (fam hist lib catalog) which is somewhat more
sophisticated than the online version. It has LOTS of material. Another
CD-ROM of interest is one called The Source (another $5.00) which is ALL the
US plus some foreign ones of the Research Outlines compiled by the LDS
genealogists for searching various states. They are great outlines. Some of
them are online also on the FHLC website.
The URL for the website is:
www.familysearch.org
After you get on the webpage, look on the lower right. There is a link to
the catalog. (it says "search the Family History Library Catalog for records
and resources)."
Click on that link. (Come back later and explore other links if you are so
inclined.)
The catalog search page will give you several choices: Place search, Surname
search, etc.
For Virginia - click on Place
Type in Virginia, (leave second one blank), then click on "search."
Find "Virginia" in the list of 14 topics and
click on it.
The first group of 20 topics of a total of 236 is displayed.
Check out what's available in this first group, then keep clicking on "view
next set of matching topics " until you come to the last group of topics. In
this last group you will find "Virginia-Vital Records" (which includes
whatever LDS has on births, marriages, deaths).
Click on "Virginia-Vital Records."
Click on "Birth Records 1853-1941; indexes 1853-1950."
Click on "view film notes"
You will see the first 20 of 101 "film notes."
To see the next 20 of the 101, click on "next film notes" at bottom of screen.
And on, and on, and on.
Having trouble remembering my name now, need sleep.
Larry
Greetings,
After carefully setting up page 1 of the LDS Virginia Birth info, I
transmitted the page to myself to check out how it looked. When I received
the page it was very close to the way I transmitted it.
I then sent the page out to you guys, and when I received the page from the
lists the page was a disaster.
I don't know went wrong, but at this time it seems there is no reason to
expect that the other pages will fare any better. For that reason, I will
not be attempting to send the other pages to any list.
If you have interest in any of the films listing County Birth information
from the LDS, please contact me privately off the list, and I will send you
the county film info you want ASAP.
Larry
Greetings,
What follows is some of the information I copied from a LDS FHC center of
what's available through them for births in the state of Virginia.
This is page one (1) of 8, --- one by one seven others pages will follow at
about one page a day.

Death certificates give the name of the deceased, spouses name, last place of
residence, cause of death and the attending physician. Sometimes information
is incomplete. Names of the deceased are arranged by county and then by year
until 1896. From 1900 to 1912 the deceased names are filed chronologically by
year and alphabetically within the year.

Greetings,
Larry here.
>From a pamphlet I have from the
Virginia State Library and Archives,
Archives and Records Division, Research Notes, Number 2,
It states:
"A law requiring the Systematic Statewide recording of births and deaths was
passed by the Virginia General Assembly on April 11, 1853. The law required
every commissioner of revenue to make an annual registration of births and
deaths in his district at the time personal property subject to taxation was
ascertained.
The commissioner was to record births and deaths that occurred prior to
December 31 of the preceding year and return the record to the clerk of the
court by June 1.
Information was obtained from heads of family, Physicians, or Coroners, and
the law imposed penalties for failing to furnish or collect the information.
The Clerk of Court in each locality was directed to enter the information
supplied by the commissioner into registers and prepare an alphabetical index
to each record. A copy of each register was forwarded to the Virginia
Auditor of Public Accounts.
The law went into effect on July 1, 1853, and continued until 1896 when an
economy-consious legislature repealed the recording provisions.
Birth and Death registers in the Virginia State Library and Archives are
copies of these records made by local clerks from the lists compiled by the
commissioner
and forwarded to the Auditor of Public Accounts. The Auditor was directed to
turn the lists over to the Bureau of Vital Statistics in 1918 and the
registers were later transferred to the Archives. The records are an
indispensable source for the most basic of biographical facts about earlier
generations of Virginians.
WHAT THE RECORDS SHOW
Information found on birth and death registers changed little between 1853
and 1896. For births, the registers have headings for the date of birth; name
of child, if named; color (if "colored," whether slave or free); sex;
whether born dead or alive; the place of birth; the name of the father or
owner; the fathers occupation; the fathers residence (the county or locality
in the county); the mother's name in full; how many infants at this birth
(whether this was a multiple birth); deformities or any circumstances of
interest; the name of the person giving the information, and the relation of
the informant to the person born.
Death registers record the name of the deceased; race; sex; name of the
owner;, if a slave; date of death; place of death; place of death; name of
the disease or cause of death; age (years, months, days); the name of the
parents of the deceased; where born; occupation; consort of, or unmarried;
name of the person giving the information; and a description of the informant
(weather a physician, consort, head of family, or friend).
It is not unusual to find some of the information missing from the records.
If an infant had not been named at the time of birth or death, the entry
would record only the surname or note "Smith Infant." Only the month appears
for the date of birth or death in some instances. On the death registers, the
names of parents of the deceased are frequently omitted or unreliable since
the person giving the information may not have known. Caused of death are
frequently not known.
When John Doublin reported the death of his friend Charles Beasley in
Lancaster County in November 1896, the only information given was that
Beasley was 120 years old and had died from "old age."
An index to birth records between 1853 and 1896 is available on microfilm in
the Archives. The index is arranged in ten-year periods alphabetically by
Surname (i.e. names A through Z for the years 1853 through 1869). The index
lists the name of the child, the names of the father and mother, the date of
birth, the county in which the birth was recorded, and the page number of the
birth register for the year of the birth.
After locating an entry in the index, the researcher should find the county
register for the year and examine the appropriate page for the record.
There is also an index to births of slaves for the years 1853 through 1865.
The index is arranged alphabetically by the name of the owner, overseer,
employer, or informant. The name of the slave, name of the mother, date of
birth, county of birth, and page number are listed.
There is no index to death records for the period of 1853 through 1896.
Some county court clerks prepared indexes to births and deaths for this
period Microfilm copies of the indexes may be available among the county
court records in the Archives collection. Examine the guides to county court
records in the Archives to determine if indexes are available". End of
quote. =================================================
